Event-related potentials reveal early activation of syntax information in Chinese verb processing
By taking advantage of the semantic-syntactic characteristics of Chinese verbs, the current study examined the brain activity of automatic activation of syntactic features at the single word level. Both syntactic (transitivity) and semantic (integrity) features of the verb were manipulated. Event-related potentials were measured while subjects performed lexical decision tasks on visually presented verbs at the single word level. The results showed that there was a significant transitivity effect in both lateral and midline areas for the 150-200 ms time window (N200 effect), indicating the retrieval of the syntactic feature. There was also a significant syntactic-semantic interaction at the late stage of verb processing (N400 effect) in the midline central-parietal region, reflecting syntactic influences on semantic processing. These findings suggest that transitivity is an integral part of the mental representation of Chinese verbs and such information can be retrieved at the early stage of single verb processing and can influence subsequent semantic integration. Loss of 18q22.3 Involving the Carboxypeptidase of Glutamate-like Gene Is Associated with Poor Prognosis in Resected Pancreatic Cancer
PURPOSES:
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death, and studies on the clinical relevance of its genomic imbalances are warranted.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN:
Recurrent copy number alterations of cytobands and genes were analyzed by array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) in 44 resected pancreatic cancer specimens. Prognostic markers identified by aCGH were validated by PCR gene copy number assay in an independent validation cohort of 61 resected pancreatic cancers. The functions of gene identified were evaluated by proliferation, cell cycle, and migration assays in pancreatic cancer cells.
RESULTS:
We showed recurrent copy number gains and losses in the first cohort. Loss of 18q22.3 was significantly associated with short-term overall survival in the first cohort (P = 0.019). This cytoband includes the carboxypeptidase of glutamate-like (CPGL) gene. CPGL gene deletion was associated with shorter overall survival in the validation cohort (P = 0.003). CPGL deletion and mutations of TP53 or Kras seem to be independent events. A Cox model analysis of the two cohorts combined showed that loss of 18q22.3/deletion of the CPGL gene was an independent poor prognostic factor for overall survival (HR = 2.72, P = 0.0007). Reconstitution of CPGL or its splicing variant CPGL-B into CPGL-negative pancreatic cancer cells attenuated cell growth, migration, and induced G(1) accumulation.
CONCLUSION:
Loss of 18q22.3/deletion of the CPGL gene is a poor prognostic marker in resected pancreatic cancer, and functional studies suggest the CPGL gene as growth suppressor gene in pancreatic cancer

A TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS OF PENNSYLVANIA DAIRY FARMS
This study estimates technical efficiency (TE) using a stochastic production frontier based on a randomly selected cross-sectional sample of Pennsylvania dairy farms. The Cobb-Douglas functional form is a suitable model in the estimation. Estimates of mean technical efficiency and appropriate technical efficiency of individual farms are computed and compared under three distributional assumptions of the efficiency disturbance terms. Evaluation of novel mycelium-based bio-foams using unexplored mycelium species and agricultural waste as packaging materials
The current petroleum-based non-degradable plastic packaging foams cause serious environmental pollution problems and place a burden on landfill. Fungal mycelium-based bio-foams are emerging waste-derived bio-degradable alternatives by utilizing fungal mycelium as the adhesive and waste as the substrate. Fungal mycelium is sustainable and plays an important role in developing mycelium-based biomaterial. However, with only a few species characterized, many unidentified species with the potential to construct high-quality mycelial materials are waiting to be explored.
This study evaluated the performance of mycelium-based biomaterials using six unexplored novel mycelium species (Fomes fomentarius, Flammulina velutipes, Trichaptum biforme, Coprinopsis macrocephalus, Trametes pubescens, Bjerkandera adusta) and two commonly used mycelium species (Pleurotus ostreatus, Ganoderma lucidum). This study also examined the performance of nutrient-supplied mycelium-based biomaterials and non-supplied mycelium-based biomaterials using three additional mycelium species (Pleurotus ostreatus, Ganoderma lucidum, Flammulina velutipes). A mother-culture based method was applied during the fabrication process of making mycelium-based biomaterials. The growth performance, morphological analysis, dry density, moisture content, shrinkage percentage, mechanical properties (firmness, compression modulus, recovery rate), thermogravimetric analysis, water absorption and thickness swelling properties of eleven mycelium-based bio-foams were investigated.
The results showed that the mycelium-based bio-foams' physical and mechanical properties depend on the mycelium species inherent characteristics and nutrient supplement conditions. Bio-foams made by Bjerkandera adusta and Fomes fomentarius had great colonization conditions, dense and solid tangled hyphae, thick hydrophobic mycelial skin, and similar density and mechanical properties to packaging foams. Additional nutrient supplements supported the mycelium growth on the substrate, increased bio-foams density, enhanced compressive firmness, and improved the recovery rate after compression. Besides commonly used mycelium species Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum, the two novel mycelium species Bjerkandera adusta and Fomes fomentarius are promising fungal species for making mycelium-based packaging foams.February 202
