The L-Proline-Catalyzed Asymmetric Syntheses
In recent years, L-proline has been employed as the catalyst for the intra-and intermolecular aldol reactions, α- amination of aldehydes and ketones, and three-component Mannich reactions. These proline-catalyzed asymmetric reactions showed high stereoselectivities and gave products with high ee values some time up to > 99%. Examples are given to illustrate the versatility of L-proline in chiral organic syntheses
Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture
This thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry
Embedded Data Librarianship: A Case Study of Providing Data Management Support for a Science Department
This case study details how a data services librarian and a science librarian collaborate to provide embedded data management support for the research-oriented Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University–Newark. Robust L2–L∞ control of uncertain differential linear repetitive processes

The official published version can be obtained from the link - Copyright 2008 Elsevier LtdFor two-dimensional (2-D) systems, information propagates in two independent directions. 2-D systems are known to have both system-theoretical and applications interest, and the so-called linear repetitive processes (LRPs) are a distinct class of 2-D discrete linear systems. This paper is concerned with the problem of L2–L∞ (energy to peak) control for uncertain differential LRPs, where the parameter uncertainties are assumed to be norm-bounded. For an unstable LRP, our attention is focused on the design of an L2–L∞ static state feedback controller and an L2–L∞ dynamic output feedback controller, both of which guarantee the corresponding closed-loop LRPs to be stable along the pass and have a prescribed L2–L∞ performance. Sufficient conditions for the existence of such L2–L∞ controllers are proposed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The desired L2–L∞ dynamic output feedback controller can be found by solving a convex optimization problem. Required Data Management Training for Graduate Students in an Earth and Environmental Sciences Department
The increasing importance of data management in the sciences has led the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at a research intensive university to work closely with the Physical Sciences Librarian and Data Services Librarian on campus to provide mandatory training to its graduate students. Although integrating data management training into the graduate program curriculum may not be possible, there are still opportunities to ensure students learn such skills prior to graduating. This article describes the four approaches taken thus far – a seminar about basic data management during the department’s weekly seminar series, creation of a Data Profile form that students were asked to complete, an interactive workshop during the department’s annual retreat, and assistance with writing data management plans. Buy-in for requiring data management training was essential from both faculty and students and was possible because both groups understood the value of research data management skills. Also vital to the success of these approaches was how the subject specialist and data librarians leveraged their respective areas of expertise in a complementary fashion to address disciplinary as well as broader data-related concerns.Peer reviewe

He points out scenery he found scintillating along the way, hoping that some may pick up the banner and chew on a few of the ideas for a while. He suggests a revisit to Albert O. A comparison of submicrometer particle dose between Australian and Italian people
Alveolar and tracheobronchial-deposited submicrometer particle number and surface area data received by different age groups in Australia are shown. Activity patterns were combined with microenvironmental data through a Monte-Carlo method. Particle number distributions for the most significant microenvironments were obtained from our measurement survey data and people activity pattern data from the Australian Human Activity Pattern Survey were used.\ud

Daily alveolar particle number (surface area) dose received by all age groups was equal to 3.0×1010 particles (4.5×102 mm2), varying slightly between males and females. In contrast to gender, the lifestyle was found to significantly affect the daily dose, with highest depositions characterizing adults. The main contribution was due to indoor microenvironments. \ud

Finally a comparison between Italian and Australian people in terms of received particle dose was reported; it shows that different cooking styles can affect dose levels: higher doses were received by Italians, mainly due to their particular cooking activity
Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer
This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title
Iterative channel equalization, channel decoding and source decoding
The performance of soft source decoding is evaluated over dispersive AWGN channels. By employing source codes having error-correcting capabilities, such as Reversible Variable-Length Codes (RVLCs) and Variable-Length Error-Correcting (VLEC) codes, the softin/soft-out (SISO) source decoder benefits from exchanging information with the MAP equalizer, and effectively eliminates the inter-symbol interference (ISI) after a few iterations. It was also found that the soft source decoder is capable of significantly improving the attainable performance of the turbo receiver provided that channel equalization, channel decoding and source decoding are carried out jointly and iteratively. At SER = 10-4, the performance of this three-component turbo receiver is about 2 dB better in comparison to the benchmark scheme carrying out channel equalization and channel decoding jointly, but source decoding separately. At this SER value, the performance of the proposed scheme is about 1 dB worse than that of the ½-rate convolutional coded non-dispersive AWGN channel.<br/
