Effects of SSRIs on inflammatory markers in patients with major depressive disorder:: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction: Peripheral levels of inflammatory markers are elevated in major depressive disorder (MDD).Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) affect levels of inflammatory markers in patients withMDD, but studies have reported inconsistent findings. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims toinvestigate the effects of SSRIs treatment on peripheral levels of a range of inflammatory markers in MDDpatients. Methods: Systematic literature search (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane) for trialspublished before November 2016 were conducted. Studies were included if they used SSRI monotherapyand peripheral levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, andinterferon (IFN)-γ were measured before and after treatment in patients with MDD. Meta-analysis wasconducted using Comprehensive Meta-analysis (version 2). Effect sizes were calculated using biascorrected standardized mean difference (Hedges’ g) between pre- and post-treatment. Sub-group analysesand publication bias estimates were undertaken; sensitivity analyses were performed using differentestimated pre- and post-treatment correlations and after removing poor quality studies. Results: Sixteeneligible studies including 570 MDD patients were included in the meta-analysis: 10 studies for IL-6; 7 forTNF-α; 5 for IL-1β, IL-4 and IL-10; 4 for IL-2; and 3 for IFN-γ. The pooled effect estimate indicates SSRI treatment decreased levels of pro-inflammatory markers IL-6 (Hedges’ g, -0.428; 95%CI, -0.699 to -0.158;I2=84.867) and IL-1β (Hedges’ g=-0.873; 95%CI, -1.702 to -0.043; I2=94.237), and anti-inflammatory markerIL-10 (Hedges’ g=-0.535; 95%CI, -0.987 to -0.084; I2=84.369). There were no significant treatment effects onlevels of IL-2, IL-4, TNF-α, or IFN-γ. There was a high level of heterogeneity between studies. Sub-group analyses on studies involving IL-6 indicated the high heterogeneity was not explained by age, gender, sample size, drug dosage, study duration or study design. No evidence of publication bias was found. Sensitivity analyses indicated the robustness of the primary analyses. Conclusions: High heterogeneity between studies limits interpretation, but meta-analysis indicates moderate immunoregulatory effects of SSRIs treatment for MDD, which suggests SSRIs may owe some of their therapeutic effect to their anti-inflammatory propertie
Flexible Sn0₂/n-doped carbon nanofiber films as integrated electrodes for lithium-ion batteries with superior rate capacity and long cycle life
A freestanding SnO₂ @N-CNF film prepared by electrospinning exhibits excellent flexibility and a high surface area of 506 m²g⁻¹ . When used as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, a high reversible capacity of 754 mAh g⁻¹ is maintained after the 300(th) cycle at 1 A g⁻¹ . Effects of SSRIs on peripheral inflammatory markers in patients with major depressive disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Methods: Systematic literature search (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane) for studies published beforeNovember 2018. Studies were included if they used SSRI monotherapy and peripheral levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon (IFN)-γ were measured before and after treatment in patients with MDD. Meta-analysis was conducted using Comprehensive Meta-analysis (version 2). Effect sizes were calculated using bias-corrected standardized mean difference (Hedges’ g) between pre- and post-treatment. Sub-group analyses, meta-regression and publication bias estimates were undertaken; sensitivity analyses were performed using different estimated pre- and post-treatment correlations and after removing poor quality studies.Results: Twenty two eligible studies including 827 MDD patients were included in the meta-analysis: fifteen studies for IL-6; eleven for TNF-α; eight for IL-10; seven for IL-1β; six for IL-4; five for IL-2; and four for IFN-γ. The pooled effect estimate indicates SSRI treatment decreased levels of pro-inflammatory markers IL-6 (Hedges’ g, -0.418; 95%CI, −0.663 to −0.174; I2=89.412), TNF-α (Hedges’ g, −0.554; 95%CI, −0.990 to −0.118; I2=95.438) and IL-1β (Hedges’ g=−0.574; 95%CI, −1.014 to −0.135; I2=91.622), and anti-inflammatory marker IL-10 (Hedges’ g=−0.615; 95%CI, −0.989 to −0.242; I2=90.406). There were no significant treatment effects on levels of IL-2, IL-4, or IFN-γ. There was a high level of heterogeneity between studies. Sensitivity analyses indicated the robustness of the primary analyses. Conclusions: The current review and meta-analysis indicates moderate immunomodulating effects of SSRI treatmentfor MDD, which suggests SSRIs may owe some of their therapeutic effect to their anti-inflammatory properties. High heterogeneity across studies may limit interpretation of the findings and larger randomized clinical trials are warranted
Natural products in diabetes research: quantitative literature analysis
The current study aimed to identify which natural products and which research directions are related to the major contributors to academic journals for diabetes therapy. Bibliometric data were extracted from the Web of Science online database using the search string TOPIC=(natural product* OR natural compound* OR natural molecule* OR phytochemical* OR secondary metabolite*) AND TS=(diabet*) and analysed by a bibliometric software, VOSviewer. The search yielded 3694 publications, which were collectively cited 80,791 times, with an H-index of 117 and 21.9 citations per publication on average. The top-contributing countries were India, the USA, China, South Korea and Brazil. Curcumin, flavanone, resveratrol, carotenoid, polyphenols, flavonol, flavone and berberine were the most frequently cited natural products or compound classes. Our results provide a brief overview of the major directions of natural product research in diabetes up to now and hint on promising avenues for future research.Atanas G.
