Equivalence between best responses and undominated

    No full text
For games with expected utility maximizing players whose strategy sets are finite, Pearce (1984) shows that a strategy is strictly dominated by some mixed strategy, if and only if, this strategy is not a best response to some belief about opponents' strategy choice. This note generalizes Pearce's (1984) equivalence result to games with expected utility maximizing players whose strategy sets are arbitrary compact sets.

Odoardo Fialetti (1573-c.1638): the interrelation of Venetian art and anatomy, and his importance in England

Bolognese artist Odoardo Fialetti (1573 – c.1638) is a fascinating figure upon which curiously little work has been done. Though he is a rarely discussed pupil of Tintoretto, Fialetti’s oeuvre is vast (some 55 known paintings and approximately 450 prints) and incredibly diverse. His work encompasses religious subjects, portraits, books on drawing and sport, maps, and illustration for treatises on city defences, literary texts, and anatomy. His work was influential for several hundred years after his death, not only in Venice and northern Italy, but also in France where his designs were used as decoration on faïence produced at Nevers, and England, where his paintings were much admired at court. Fialetti’s close association with Sir Henry Wotton, and the careful copy of his drawing book made by Alexander Browne in the mid-seventeenth century, attest to his impact on the formation of an Italianate sensibility in the appreciation of the visual arts in Early Modern England. In the realm of science, Fialetti’s influence can be deduced from his drawings of curiously animated cadavers in detailed landscapes to those of future generations of anatomists and illustrators throughout Europe. Because of the diverse associations and projects throughout his career, the study of Fialetti is inherently interdisciplinary, encompassing the history of art, history of science and history of the Venetian book trade, as well as crossing geographical boundaries in linking Venetian art and English tastes of the late renaissance and early baroque. Through examination of his extant oeuvre, as well as discussion of lost work, I aim to recognise Fialetti’s status as an artist responding to contemporary artistic debates (disegno versus colorito), a changing cultural climate and the burgeoning importance of the printed medium

Alexander Csoma de Kôrös, the Hungarian Bodhisattva The Hungarian traveller Alexander Csoma de Kôrös (1784-1842) is the founder of tibetology. He is the author of the first dictionary and the first grammar of the classical Tibetan language, and of many other works on Tibetan culture. When he left his homeland for the East, his intention was to trace the mysterious origin of this people in high Asia, but he could not reach his initial aim, so that he remained in the Himalaya and became the first specialist of Tibetan buddhist civilisation. Man of high virtue and of exceptional determination, he has been proclaimed a bodhisattva on the 22nd of February 1933 at the Japanese university of Taishô, Tokyo, in recognition for the fundamental part he played in the discovery of Tibetan buddhism. Inexpensive fusion methods for enhancing feature detection

    No full text
Recent successful approaches to high-level feature detection in image and video data have treated the problem as a pattern classification task. These typically leverage the techniques learned from statistical machine learning, coupled with ensemble architectures that create multiple feature detection models. Once created, co-occurrence between learned features can be captured to further boost performance. At multiple stages throughout these frameworks, various pieces of evidence can be fused together in order to boost performance. These approaches whilst very successful are computationally expensive, and depending on the task, require the use of significant computational resources. In this paper we propose two fusion methods that aim to combine the output of an initial basic statistical machine learning approach with a lower-quality information source, in order to gain diversity in the classified results whilst requiring only modest computing resources. Our approaches, validated experimentally on TRECVid data, are designed to be complementary to existing frameworks and can be regarded as possible replacements for the more computationally expensive combination strategies used elsewhere

International audienceThis articles is based on the unpublished diaries of grand-duke Carl Alexander of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach and his partly unpublished correspondence with Liszt (the edition is on preparation by the same author). It shows how close the two men were, and how Liszt advised the grand-duke for more than 40 years (1844-1886) on cultural and political issues. Liszt's role was non only to be a "Kapellmeister", but also a secrete and intimate minister to the grand-duke, as Goethe had been for Carl Alexander's grand-father, Carl August.

Summary The manuscript “Isle de Cube. Antilles en général“, written by Alexander von Humboldt from 1804 onwards or later, has only recently been published. It is the groundwork for the Essai politique sur l’île de Cuba (1826), which is regarded as the “most important liberal manifesto against slavery of the 19th century“. The aim of this study is to trace the textual genesis of Humboldt’s work in regard to content and style from the manuscript to the publication in order to draw conclusions on Humboldt’s methods and strategies as an author with a political concern

Performance Prediction of Wideband Unambiguous Target Detection in Diffuse Ground Clutter

    No full text
In this paper the influence of clutter power spectrum on unambiguous radar target detection with single low pulse repetition frequency wideband waveform is analyzed. Impact of both stationary and diffuse clutter components for different signal bandwidths and coherent processing intervals (CPI) is studied. Exponential model of the ground clutter power spectrum for the diffuse component is used. For the first time, radar detection performance for wideband signals at ambiguous to clutter velocities is predicted as function of bandwidth and CPI.Accepted author manuscriptMicrowave Sensing, Signals & System

Control Design for Linear Port-Hamiltonian Boundary Control Systems: An Overview

    No full text
n this paper, we provide an overview of some control synthesis methodologies for boundary control systems (BCS) in port-Hamiltonian form. At first, it is shown how to design a state-feedback control action able to shape the energy function to move its minimum at the desired equilibrium, and how to achieve asymptotic stability via damping injection. Secondly, general conditions that a linear regulator has to satisfy to have a well-posed and exponentially stable closed-loop system are presented. This second methodology is illustrated with reference to two specific stabilisation scenarios, namely when the plant is in impedance or in scattering form. It is also shown how these techniques can be employed in the analysis of more general systems described by coupled PDEs and ODEs. As an example, the repetitive control scheme is studied, and conditions to have asymptotic tracking of generic periodic reference signals are presented. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG

The US-EU financial markets regulatory dialogue The European financial integration comes within a worldwide and evolutional context where the financial sphere plays a particular role. So the transatlantic relation between the European Union and the United States takes a prominent position in the financial integration. Due to new rules imposed by the growing economical globalization, Europe and the United States implemented last years a regulatory dialogue intended to better analyse common stakes. First, the author reminds the context in which this regulatory dialogue and the reasons of its establishment are set up. This article tries to highlight the consequences of such collaboration and assesses the first results and some future perspectives.
