Effects of audience, perceived ease of leaving, and in-group identification on the tendencies to favor or derogate the in-group.
This paper studies how audience, ease of leaving one’s in-group, and in-group identification would affect one’s degree of in-group derogation (IGD) and in-group favoritism (IGF). Word selections and essays describing Singaporeans were collected, as measures of IGD and IGF, from 120 Singaporean participants randomly assigned to one of four conditions (in-group audience, easy to leave; in-group audience, difficult to leave; out-group audience, easy to leave; out-group audience, difficult to leave). There is no interaction effect of ease of leaving and in-group identification on IGD and IGF across audiences. There is higher IGD with in-group audience than out-group audience, and higher IGF for high identifiers than low identifiers. Displays of IGD and IGF are dependent on individual and situational factors.Bachelor of Art

Development of a substance abuse self-help application
In the context of education, technology enables the creation of instructional environments that can facilitate active engagement, meet the specific and varying learning needs of the students and facilitate collaborative problem solving. The integration of technology in education has become essential since technology is becoming the engine on which teaching and learning operates. The world is therefore forced to invest in the use of technology into institutions to meet the needs of the students.
In collaboration with the Correctional Rehabilitation Services Branch (RT) of the Singapore Prison Service, this project aims to convert a 68-page substance abuse self-help booklet into 8 android applications. The applications will consist of written information, interactive exercises and videos.
The features of the applications include the implementation of Text-to-Speech function to enhance the youth offenders’ understanding of the content, the integration of Database Management System to improve the efficiency of monitoring the learning progress of the youth offenders, and the integration of Google Analytics to improve the efficiency of monitoring the usage of the applications.
The applications aim to generate the youth offenders’ interest in gaining more awareness of their substance abuse problem through the use of the applications.Bachelor of Engineerin

Post-stroke seizures (PSS) can lead to lasting complications, such as prolonged hospitalizations, increased disability rates, and higher mortality. Our study investigates the associated factors that contribute to post-stroke seizures in patients at a local tertiary hospital.Patients and Methods: We designed a case–control study where patients admitted with PSS were recruited with consent. Controls admitted for stroke without seizure were then included. Suitability based on exclusion criteria was ensured before recording their sociodemographic and clinical data. An EEG was performed and read by two certified neurologists before the data was analyzed. Results: We recruited 180 participants, 90 cases and 90 matched controls. Gender (p=0.013), race (p=0.015), dyslipidemia (p< 0.001), prior stroke (p< 0.031), large artery atherosclerosis (p< 0.001), small vessel occlusions (p< 0.001), blood pressure on presentation (p< 0.028) and thrombolysis administration (p< 0.029) were significantly associated with the occurrence of PSS. An increase in odds of PSS was observed in the male gender (1.974), dyslipidemia (3.480), small vessel occlusions (4.578), and in participants with epileptiform changes on EEG (3.630). Conversely, lower odds of PSS were seen in participants with high blood pressure on presentation (0.505), large artery atherosclerosis (0.266), and those who underwent thrombolysis (0.319).Conclusion: This study emphasized that identifying post-stroke seizures may be aided by EEGs and recognizing at-risk groups, which include males of Chinese descent in Asia, dyslipidemia, small vessel occlusions, those with low to normal blood pressure on presentation, and epileptiform changes in EEGs.Plain Language Summary: The research aims to establish the risk factors associated with post-stroke seizures in an Asian population and their similarity to the Western literature. Our findings highlight the critical risk factors to identify in at-risk patients, which may prompt changes in guidelines in future to enhance patient outcomes and improve the quality of care. Keywords: seizures, stroke, post-stroke epilepsy, epilepsy, electroencephalogra

离散华人的侨乡情感与投资行为 :马来西亚华商陈凯希个案研究 = The relationship between Qiaoxiang ties of Chinese diaspora and their investment behaviour : a case study on Malaysian businessman Tan Kai Hee
Moving into 1980s, the political atmosphere in South East Asia region was getting more stable, this lead to South East Asia countries resuming diplomatic relations with China. The Open Door Policy of China further provided the South East Asia Chinese Businessman with a good environment and opportunities for investments. Recent years, the phenomenon shown that South East Asia Chinese Businessman has significant amount of investments in China became a popular topic in China and South East Asia academic. In China academic, Overseas Chinese Studies mostly focus on “China-centered Approach”. The thesis attempts to examine the relationship between Malaysia Chinese Community and China in Malaysia. My research analyzes will focus on Malaysia Chinese businessman Mr. Tan Kai Hee who has abundant experiences and played an important role in developing relationships between China and Malaysia in several areas such like politic, economic market and culture. Most importantly, Malaysia Chinese businessman could be seem as a main subject in Chinese Diaspora Community. Thus, this thesis is tried to analyze the influences of “Qiaoxiang Ties”on Tan Kai Hee’s investment behaviour. Besides, the thesis will discuss on various types of “Culture ties” which has been transformed from Qiaoxiang ties and brought large amount of economic benefits to the Chinese businessman. Furthermore, those culture ties became the concrete ties in retaining the relationships between Malaysia Chinese community and China.Bachelor of Art
Law, foreign direct investment and economic development in Taiwan
This research looks at the legal regime governing foreign direct investment
(FDI) in Taiwan, and at the interaction between the Government's economic
policies, legal reform and FDI in the economic development of Taiwan. The
research for this thesis is focused on the period of 1945 to the present; however, a
study of the pre-1945 period is provided as a basis for analysing the post-1945
developments. There are three principal aims of this thesis. First, the thesis is
designed to illustrate how the economic success of Taiwan challenges traditional
views put forward in development theories and in law and development theories, in
particular. Secondly, the thesis considers the role of law in the development
process. By examining the evolution and operation of the FDI legal regime in
Taiwan in its economic, social, political and historical context, this research
suggests that the role of law is as a 'doorkeeper' for a country's development. If
consistent with a public-interest-oriented economic policy, an appropriate and wellconsidered
legal regime can help a country's development without risking its
economic sovereignty. Finally, this thesis examines Taiwan's current FDI regime
for its appropriateness. Using international law as a reference-point, a detailed
analysis is made of Taiwan's current FDI laws. The thesis suggests that certain of
these laws are out of date and that further legal reform is required.
The thesis concludes by slightly modifying the developmental model for law
and FDI which is put forward in Chapter 1, in order to emphasise the important role
of government economic policy in Taiwan's development. It is submitted that the
Government's choice of development strategy in each of Taiwan's different
development phases has been crucial to Taiwan's success. The thesis also
concludes that an appropriate legal regime remains important for a country's
development regardless of its development status
