The nature of qualitative construction partnering research: literature review
Get PDFfrom the publisher's site: "The purpose of this paper is to investigate the nature of qualitative construction partnering research.
Design/methodology/approach. In total, 20 qualitative peer-reviewed papers about construction partnering research are reviewed.
Findings:
The results show four methodological gaps. All identified gaps have in common that specific time and place dependent details that may have influenced understanding of studied individuals are underexposed.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of this study is that empirical-based papers are divided into either qualitative or quantitative research, but the boundary between those categories is not as black and white as it may look like in first instance."

Building renovation: A new industry?
No full textBased on construction economics, building economics and assessments of building service life, the renovation need of buildings is notably higher than the actual amount of building renovation. As energy saving renovations become more common, the volume of building renovation is forecast to grow even further. Building renovation suffers from both a lack of suppliers and tailored solutions. This study has searched for a reason for this phenomenon. This is a theoretical study in economics, testing the rationalisation ability of three different economics theories, including the theory of construction economics, evolutionary economic theory and the theory of creating customer value. In accordance with construction economics theory, renovation construction competes in all owner sectors with other expenditures, and since renovations can be postponed, they often are. Demand is not activated by interesting supply or by supply corresponding to the needs. Renovation projects are implemented with a production-oriented new construction concept. In addition, a user-oriented approach does not produce a good outcome if it does not include catering for the special features of renovation construction

Extended construction supply chain management:relationships, rewards and risks
No full textOver the past decade, the UK construction industry has sought to exploit the rewards of supply chain management practice. This paper explores construction industry capability to implement an extended construction supply chain culture. Where commercial solidarity prevails and integrated supply chains, including small and mediums sized enterprises (SME\u92s) vie for construction projects and economic advantage. Despite recent advancements in construction supply chain management many barriers continue to inhibit the realisation of fully extended construction supply chains. Economic, social and cultural conventions require to be investigated to appreciate the complexity associated with the strategic alignment of extended supply chain stakeholders\u92 interests. Drawing on a model of supply chain maturity, the practicalities of extended construction supply chain relationships, rewards and risks are reviewed. Given the current structure of the construction industry, it is proposed that the attainment of extended construction supply chain management practice will require key industry stakeholders to develop innovative collaborative policies that will be progressive, organisationally supportive and commercially attractive to SME\u92s

How to manage corporate real estate and end-users engagement into Smart Workplace Change Strategies: a case study
No full textProgressively, the space demand of workplaces is modifying, together with the habits of workers. How can companies react to the change of perspective that is affecting the traditional ways of working? What does ‘Intelligent Built Environment’ mean for corporations?
For several years at international level, it has diffused a new conception of the offices: flexible spaces, shared desks, informal areas that can accommodate different activities as needed. Even in Italy this phenomenon is spreading rapidly: some firms have started to abandon cellular offices and open-plan offices, and to experiment flexible work settings. A switch to a new conception of the office work can lead to the opportunity for modifications of space layout and the introduction of different solutions. Therefore, a new demand is emerging with specific characteristics. The most significant drivers seem to be economic efforts (big and expensive buildings affected by low daily occupancy) and organizational reasons (teamwork, part-time work, teleworking, network strategies, etc.). Nevertheless, even external factors such as competition, globalization and corporate image can influence the motivation for a change.
The authors have collected data on new ways of working and workplace change in the brand new Italian headquarters of a company active in the technology hardware & equipment industry, with more than 1,200 employees. The investigation involved both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. By matching the results obtained, it has been possible to elaborate some considerations regarding benefits and risks of flexible workstations and the way to integrate smart working into corporate real estate strategies. What kind of data is valuable to retrieve about the use of workspaces? Which methodologies would be the most suitable for such a scope? When and how should consultants support their clients? And, most of all, to which extent can an ‘intelligent building’ support the human activity in the daily life?
The knowledge acquired can be useful to companies, both for managing the functioning of existing buildings and for orienting future projects towards the objective of becoming more ‘intelligent’

No full textThis Master thesis is an investigation of the Book “Christoph und sein Vater” by Hans Habe. The author was one of the most important publicists in West Germany after World War II. During his life he wrote more than twenty books, some of them translated into English, and around ten thousand newspaper articles, but today he is unknown and unnoticed by literary scholars. The beginning of this thesis (chapter 2) summarizes the investigated book and highlights biographical information about Hans Habe. The main topic of the book is the relationship between Veit Harlan, the director of the anti-Semitic film “Jud Suess” during the Nazi period, and his son Thomas Harlan. The literary interpretation reveals not only a relationship between the main characters and the German postwar period (chapter 3), but also a strong connection to the book “Ritualmord in Ungarn” by Arnold Zweig and explores the question of Jewishness in a Christian society (chapter 4), Habe’s depiction of the Harlan family (chapter 5) and how the author discusses several problems of the 1960s German society (chapter 6). The interpretation concludes with a short summary (chapter 7).
In this thesis I argue that Hans Habe uses the conflict between Veit and Thomas Harlan to, on the one hand, cast his own criticism on the German postwar society, and on the other hand, to come to terms with the suicide of his father.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2011-07-16T14:33:50Z
