    Evolution of a Deep Fluid in a Surficial Environment Using Stable Isotopes of Carbon and Sulfur: Case of the Transitional Section of the Edwards Aquifer

    The Edwards Aquifer in south central Texas (USA) features a distinct fault line defining the freshwater and saline water zones. We aim to elucidate the evolutionary behavior of carbon and sulfur emanating from deep environments and flowing in surficial environment so as to better understand the cycling of these metals in water environments. To characterize the evolution of carbon and sulfur species in surficial environment as the fluid emanates from a deep saline aquifer, we monitored the chemical and isotopic (δ13CDIC and δ34SSO4) parameters over a 700-m stretch on a streampond system situated on the saline-freshwater line of the Edwards Aquifer’s artesian zone.     Best Management Practices and Standards, Training, and Tools to Increase Resilience of the Edwards Aquifer Water Supply During Emergency Fire Control

    In 2019 the Institute for Water Resources Science and Technology at Texas A&M University-San Antonio began work funded by the Proposition 1 Edwards Aquifer Protection Venue Project to develop Best Management Practices (BMPs) for protecting Edwards Aquifer water supplies from inadvertent contamination by HAZMAT in water runoff during emergency response-related firefighting. Results of this work are now available for your use. Technical information is available for use in developing and updating emergency response planning documents (i.e., City of San Antonio Hazard Mitigation Action Plan and the Bexar County Emergency Management Plan), educational curricula can be used for training and public outreach, and BMPs along with associated tools are now available for on-site and post-event management and hazard mitigation.     Includes bibliographical references (pages 183-196)"December 1971""This publication is partially supported by the National Sea Grant Program, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration within the United States Department of Commerce, through an institutional grant made to Texas A & M University"The West Flower Garden Bank, located on the outer edge of the Texas-Louisiana continental shelf at longitude 93°49.0' west and latitude 27°52.6' north, was investigated with respect to the subsurface structure of the pre-reef pinnacle, the environment currently surrounding the pinnacle and the carbonate sediments being deposited on the bank. Based on previous gravity work and on 3.5 kHz, 1 cubic inch air gun and bathymetric profiles taken during this survey, the topographic high is shown to have been formed by the intrusion of a shallow salt plug. The central section of the dome is a collapsed area, flanked on the east, west and north by banks rising to within 10.5 fms (19 m) of the surface. Based on erosional and depositional surfaces of the bank, stillstands of the Gulf of Mexico waters during the last transgression were at 67-73 fms (121-134 m) sometime prior to 18,000 years B.P.; 40-45 fms (73-82 m) at 17,000-15,000 years B.P.; 48-50 fms (89-90 m) at 14,000-13,000 years B.P. and 28 fms (51 m) 13,000-12,000 years B.P. The Holocene sediments of the bank are (1) a Diploria-Montastrea-Porites Facies from 10.5 fms (19 m) to 27 fms (50 m); (2) a Coral Detritus Facies that interfingers with the Diploria-Montastrea-Porites Facies at 17 fms (31 m) and the Gypsina-Lithothamnium Facies at 27 fms (50 m); (3) a Gypsina-Lithothamnium Facies from 25 fms (46 m) to 40-45 fms (73-82 m ); (4) the 1st Transition Facies from 28 fms (51 m) to 50 fms (91 m ); (5) an Amphistegina Facies from 40 fms (70 m) to 55 fms (100 m ); (6) the 2nd Transition Facies between the Amphistegina and Quartz-Planktonic Foraminiferal Facies; and (7) a Quartz-Planktonic Foraminiferal Facies from 50 fms (91 m) to the surrounding shelf. ..

    Records the reminiscences of Walter Carter, whose family owned apple orchards on Dickey Ridge, just south of Front Royal, Virginia, in the decades preceding the establishment of Shenandoah National Park. Describes the physical layout of the the orchards and surrounding towns. Discusses the demise of the apple industry in that part of the Shenandoah Valley due to a shrinking work force, as local families were evicted by the state to make room for the park. In the years prior to the Second World War, the primary customer for the Carter\u27s apples, the United Kingdom, placed restrictive tariffs on U.S. grown apples which made it impossible to compete with fruit from Canada and New Zealand. The second part of the interview consists of a driving tour of the orchard area, with Mr. Carter describing the former locations of buildings, roads, home sites and cemeteries. The group is joined by Mr. Carter\u27s wife, Caroline Carter, whose own recollections and comments are included in the discussion. The Carters make numerous references to local families and landowners.
