The "Walter L. Frost" was built in 1883 at the old East Water Street yards of the Detroit Dry Dock Company. It was of 1322 gross tons. She was built for the Rutland Transit Company of Ogdensburg, New York. "Walter L. Frost" was the first of the wooden eight-vessel fleet. Six vessels of steel also were built by the company between 1907 and 1910. They operated out of Ogdensburg through the Welland Canal and on to Chicago and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, stopping at ports enroute. Rutland Transit was a subsidiary of Rutland Railroad. The company had facilities to transport many of its cargoes to and from the east coast. The "Walter L. Frost" became stranded in a dense fog near South Manitou Island November 3, 1903. The vessel went to pieces during the winter
