    Detail, hand and lower body (seated); William Wallace Gilchrist, Jr., was born on March 2, 1879, to Susan "Maudie" Gilchrist and William Wallace Gilchrist, Sr., a celebrated American musician, conductor and composer (1846-1916); the sitter for this portrait. Gilchrist Jr. began his formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he studied under some of the period's most influential artists, including Cecilia Beaux, Thomas Anshutz, and William Merritt Chase.     Portrait of Major General Lew Wallace, ca. 1860-1869. Wallace is shown in his dress uniform, in a frock coat or shell jacket with two stars on his shoulder boards, indicating his rank. Wallace was responsible for the defense of Cincinnati, Ohio, when it was in danger of attack from the Confederate Army in the fall of 1862. In addition to his military career and service as Governor of the New Mexico Territory, Wallace is famous for his novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ," published in 1880
