Doing Coupledom: imagining, managing and performing relationality in contemporary wedding and civil partnership rituals
No full textThis thesis investigates how relationality is imagined, managed and performed by twenty-seven UK-based couples during their wedding and civil partnership rituals. The methodology involves a case study approach with eleven of the couples, who were followed through the planning of their ritual, retrospective interviews with sixteen couples and a photograph project with eight of these couples. Diversity in the sample in terms of age, gender and class allows these factors to be explored along with differences of sexuality between the couples.Commitment rituals put relationality into sharp focus as they demand practices of inclusion and exclusion. Each chapter of analysis (The Decision to Marry, Wedding Work and The Big Day) highlights how tradition and relationality are particularly significant to an understanding of the fateful moments that commitment rituals represent. The perceived expectations of family members and friends are implicated in the performance of traditional symbols, while these symbols also provide a recognised form for these relationships to take. The Discussion chapter builds upon these ideas in drawing the key themes, of imagining, managing and performing that run through each chapter, together in outlining a typology of strategies. This typology challenges a central idea of the reflexive modernisation thesis, as asserted particularly by Giddens (1991, 1992, 1994, 2002), that reflexivity involves the disembedding of individuals from their relational networks. In this way the research builds upon theorisations of relationality and embeddedness, particularly those developed by Smart (2007a) and Bottero (2010). The intersubjective nature of reflexivity is emphasised with the introduction of the terms ‘reflexive coupledom’ and ‘relational reflexivity’ alongside ‘individual reflexivity’. ‘Strategies of tradition’ is also included in the typology to emphasise how meaningconstitutive tradition continues to shape ritual action. These concepts aim to be of use in future exploration of these rituals as well as in relation to other areas of personal life
Opening Up an Intelligent Tutoring System Development Environment for Extensible Student Modeling
No full textITS authoring tools make creating intelligent tutoring systems more cost effective, but few authoring tools make it easy to flexibly incorporate an open-ended range of student modeling methods and learning analytics tools. To support a cumulative science of student modeling and enhance the impact of real-world tutoring systems, it is critical to extend ITS authoring tools so they easily accommodate novel student modeling methods. We report on extensions to the CTAT/Tutorshop architecture to support a plug-in approach to extensible student modeling, which gives an author full control over the content of the student model. The extensions enhance the range of adaptive tutoring behaviors that can be authored and support building external, student- or teacher-facing real-time analytics tools. The contributions of this work are: (1) an open architecture to support the plugging in, sharing, re-mixing, and use of advanced student modeling techniques, ITSs, and dashboards; and (2) case studies illustrating diverse ways authors have used the architecture

experiences. The first part of this book included a number of dimensions of this - differences based on the country of origin and the sort of trips that the geography, history and culture make possible, and differences based on
the destination and the sort of trip that its geography, infrastructure and amenity suggest. This geographic theme is picked up again later in the book (Carson, this volume, Chapter 25). Diversity can also come from the demographic
characteristics of travellers, and various chapters discuss diversity as a sub-theme. This second part of the book is most interested in how the type of vehicle makes a difference to the type of self-drive trip. The vehicle can often be associated with specific markets - Hardy and
Gretzel's RVers tend to be older couples (Hardy and Gretzel, this volume, Chapter 15), while Walker's motorcyclists have traditionally been young males (Walker, this volume, Chapter 12). But the demographics can change
over time, and Walker comments on the ageing of the motorcycle touring market. The vehicle can sometimes be associated with multiple markets. The four-wheel-drive and SUV vehicles at the centre of research by Taylor
and Carson (this volume, Chapter 17), and Prideaux and Coghlan (this volume, Chapter 18) cater for old and young markets as well as families. Irrespective of the demographics, the vehicles allow for, and inspire, different
types of trips. They demand different levels and types of infrastructure, they allow different lengths of trips, they suit different types of destinations, they imply different travel party sizes and so on. The aim of this chapter is to

HLA-associated immune escape pathways in HIV-1 subtype B Gag, Pol and Nef proteins
No full textBackground: Despite the extensive genetic diversity of HIV-1, viral evolution in response to immune selective pressures follows broadly predictable mutational patterns. Sites and pathways of Human Leukocyte-Antigen (HLA)-associated polymorphisms in HIV-1 have been identified through the analysis of population-level data, but the full extent of immune escape pathways remains incompletely characterized. Here, in the largest analysis of HIV-1 subtype B sequences undertaken to date, we identify HLA-associated polymorphisms in the three HIV-1 proteins most commonly considered in cellular-based vaccine strategies. Results are organized into protein-wide escape maps illustrating the sites and pathways of HLA-driven viral evolution.
Methodology/Principal Findings: HLA-associated polymorphisms were identified in HIV-1 Gag, Pol and Nef in a multicenter cohort of >1500 chronically subtype-B infected, treatment-naïve individuals from established cohorts in Canada, the USA and Western Australia. At q≤0.05, 282 codons commonly mutating under HLA-associated immune pressures were identified in these three proteins. The greatest density of associations was observed in Nef (where close to 40% of codons exhibited a significant HLA association), followed by Gag then Pol (where ~15–20% of codons exhibited HLA associations), confirming the extensive impact of immune selection on HIV evolution and diversity. Analysis of HIV codon covariation patterns identified over 2000 codon-codon interactions at q≤0.05, illustrating the dense and complex networks of linked escape and secondary/compensatory mutations.
Conclusions/Significance: The immune escape maps and associated data are intended to serve as a user-friendly guide to the locations of common escape mutations and covarying codons in HIV-1 subtype B, and as a resource facilitating the systematic identification and classification of immune escape mutations. These resources should facilitate research in HIV epitope discovery and host-pathogen co-evolution, and are relevant to the continued search for an effective CTL-based AIDS vaccine.National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Award Number U01AI068636 and AI068634
Technological capabilities and Japanese foreign direct investment in the United States
No full textExamines the effect of relative technological capabilities on Japanese direct investment into the US by looking simultaneously at industry conditions in the two markets. A negative binomial regression model is specified to estimate the effects of R&D capability and industry structure on a count measure of Japanese entries across 297 industries. The results indicate that Japanese direct investment in the US is drawn to industries intensive in R&D expenditures summed across both countries; voluntary restraints on Japanese exports encourage direct investment. When the entries are disaggregated by mode there is a significant indication that joint ventures are used for the sourcing and sharing of US technological capabilities. -from Author

No full textA minor outbreak of the Bruce spanworm, <i>Operophtera bruceata</i> (Hulst), occurred in fruit orchards of the Okanagan Valley in 1972. The heaviest infestations were limited to orchards where prebloom sprays for the fruittree leafroller,<i> Archips argyrospilus</i> (Walker), were neglected for two or more seasons. Prebloom applications of azinphosmethyl, diazinon or endosulfan at tight cluster bud to pink bud stage on apple gave good control. Apple, pear, cherry, apricot and plum were attacked

Watson [email protected] learning has proven to be a somewhat elusive concept to grasp and therefore its practical implementation has also been difficult. There are various positions on what "learning" is understood to be and there is a lack of synthesis of theoretical and empirical investigations. This thesis argues that the conception of "learning" in the organisational learning literature has received insufficient attention and that this has largely contributed to the lack of clarity in the concept of organisational learning. It is proposed that cognitive science especially connectionism. provides a model of individual learning that is capable of incorporating implicit and explicit elements of learning and knowledge. Connectionist models of learning mimic the physiological neural processes of the brain and connectionism demonstrates the capacity to combine cognitivist and constructivist theories of learning. To accomplish the transition to an explanation of collective cognitive processes as occur in organisations and while continuing to recognise the individual neural processes that must be involved. it is proposed that the theory of situated action is united with connectionism. On the basis of such, this thesis proposes a reconceptualisation of organisational learning and a new framework to guide management practice
