    This working paper takes stock of Pakistan's water resource availability, delineating water supply system and its sources including precipitation and river flows, and the impact of increasing climatic variability on the water supply system. In particular, the paper focuses on the current water usage and requirements in the agricultural sector, and how changing climatic conditions will affect the consumption patterns. With inflows expected to become more variable in the coming years, the severity of climatic extremities will become more pronounced, driving up water demands in addition to the demand increase from a rising population and urbanization. Over extraction of groundwater resources is also disturbing the water calculus and pushing the country towards a critical demand-supply gap

    Actual Crop Water Use in Project Countries : A Synthesis at the Regional Level

    This report aims to synthesize the results of a crop water use study conducted by country teams of the GEF/World Bank project, Regional Climate, Water, and Agriculture: Impacts on and Adaptation of Agro-ecological Systems in Africa. It also presents the results of the second phase of the study based on climate change scenarios, conducted by the South Africa country team. The actual evapotranspiration of five commonly grown crops-maize, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and beans-in two selected districts were analyzed by six country teams. In addition, two country teams also analyzed other crops grown in the districts. The regional analysis shows that the actual yield of the different crops-specifically of maize and groundnuts-improves with an increase in actual evapotranspiration, although the gap remains wide between actual and potential yield and actual and maximum evapotranspiration, especially for the rainfed crops. This highlights the importance of improved water management if agriculture is to play an important role as a source of food security and better livelihoods. The report highlights the vulnerability of maize to water stress and the increased risks to the viability of rainfed farming systems based on this crop. The results of the second phase of analysis show that a 2°C increase in the temperature and a doubling of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere will shorten the growing period of maize, which will result in decreased crop water requirement and use. The authors recommend extending this type of analysis to other crops as well as to other countries to develop a clearer picture of the changing pattern in crop water use of the major crops grown in the project countries

    The plant practice was conducted from June 18 to July 11, 2015 at Universal Robina Corporation- Cereal Plant, Barangay Bagong Ilog, Pasig City, Metro Manila. The main objective of this said plant practice was to brief and acquaint the student with the actual processing plant operations set by the company. The student was assigned in the Quality Assurance Division wherein she was able to experience a hands-on training on the analysis of physicochemical properties as well as the sensory characteristics of the products manufactured by the company which specifically focused on the production of coffee mixes. In line with the quality control and quality assurance procedure, the student was assigned in the acceptance of the raw materials and packaging materials used in the production of the products. The author was also introduced to the in-line and overall processes of production from the weighing of the raw materials to the discharge of the product. Through the whole course of this plant practice, the student was able to familiarize, observe and evaluate the actual technical practices and operations employed in the food industry and made her use the knowledge she gained in the university. This plant practice also gave the author some insights on how to acquire proper work ethics which will serve as a guide as she works in a food processing industry in the future

    The bachelor's composition will focus on the acceptance of Walter Whitman's work in Czech literature at the end of 19th century. It will specialize on the reception of Whitman's work by decadent writers and critics but also for instance by F. X. Salda. The composition will show in which stages the appearance of Whitman's work took place in Czech literature (taking into consideration also the first translations) and which aspects of his work the critique focused on. The author will try to prove which type of influence on literature esthetics of that period we can talk about in Whitman's case and in which areas we can see the most evident influence

    Marginalisation, Islamism and the production of the 'other's' 'other'

    Drawing on the findings of an empirical study of working-class Pakistani Muslims in southern England, this article considers the links between marginalisation, the politics of identity and the position of Pakistani Muslim women. The author shows how marginalisation (emerging from a nexus of oppressions) reinforces 'group' identity, how women are made central to 'group' identity, and how this centrality serves to legitimate their disempowerment. In this way the border that is erected to contain the group is dependent on internal divisions, the existence of which contradicts the notion of group homogeneity
