Restorative justice in cases of sexual violence: Exploring the views of the public and survivors

    No full text
This study aimed to fill a gap in the debate regarding the application of restorative justice (RJ) conferencing to sexual offences. This gap is currently characterized by absence of views expressed by survivors of sexual violence (Wager, 2013). The debate has largely occurred in an ‘empirical vacuum’ (McGlynn et al., 2012) and without the necessary consultation. This study consisted of a web-based survey of 121 community members, 40 of whom identified themselves as survivors of sexual violence. The findings indicate that both survivors and non-survivors of sexual violence express positive attitudes towards the use of restorative justice in these cases

Religious and philosophical psychology in the works of N.M. Bogolyubov

We present the results of historical and psychological research filling the gaps of contemporary knowledge about personalities of religious and philosophical direction of Russian psychology in late XIX – early XX centuries. The author introduces the biography of events and the views of Russian psychologist N.M. Bogolyubov – a man of uneasy fate, embodied in his work the idea of spiritual practice in the analysis and description of a person's inner world. Psychological works of N.M. Bogolyubov reflect the views common for Russian spiritual direction in psychology: consideration of man's inner world by revealing how mental experience is given to the person, his self, recognition of the soul as a sphere of inner reality, recognition of the mental world of a person as an independent entity, living by its own laws, which do not depend on the laws of the material world, asserting that faith can be a valid knowledge. In the arsenal of creative achievements of N.M. Bogolyubov are determination of the value of psychology in studying the problem of religious consciousness and professionalism as a necessary quality of a researcher psychologist in the field

Sexual revictimisation: double betrayal and the risk associated with dissociative amnesia

This study aimed to identify new treatment targets in order to develop more empirically informed initiatives to prevent sexual revictimization. A retrospective Web-based survey employing a mixed-methods design attracted a self-selecting sample of 481 community respondents, 183 of whom indicated a history of childhood sexual abuse. Seventy-four percent were females whose ages ranged from 16 to 69 years (mean = 31.2 years). Betrayal trauma referred to CSA committed by a trusted perpetrator (often caregivers). Disclosure experiences in childhood were reported though open–dialogue boxes. Double betrayal referred to high-betrayal trauma being combined with a negative response to a disclosure. This was associated with both higher incidences of prior psychogenic amnesia for CSA and sexual revictimization in later life. The findings have implications for educating the guardians of children about the prevalence and implications of CSA as well as the importance of early recognition and appropriate responding

Understanding children’s non-disclosure of child sexual assault: implications for assisting parents and teachers to become effective guardians

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine adult survivors’ of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) retrospective reflections on their motives for not disclosing their abuse. The aim was to identify factors that might facilitate early disclosure in order to both enhance the future safety of young people who have experienced sexual victimisation and to offer a means of reducing the numbers of future victims. Design/methodology/approach – This was a retrospective web-based, mixed-methods survey which was completed by 183 adult survivors of CSA. The data presented here is in relation to answers offered in response to an open-ended question which were thematically analysed. Findings – In all, 75 per cent of the survivors of CSA indicated that they had not told anyone of the abuse whilst they were a child. Analysis of the responses revealed five barriers to disclosure which included: a lack of opportunity, normality/ambiguity of the situation, embarrassment, concern for others and a sense of hopelessness. Additionally, some respondents highlighted implicit attempts to disclose and others reported later regret over non-disclosure. Practical implications – A timely disclosure of CSA, which is appropriately responded to, has the potential to reduce the risk for subsequent sexual exploitation/revictimisation, and to foreshorten the predations of offenders. To achieve this, responsible and trusted adults in the lives of children need to learn how to invite a genuine disclosure of CSA. Originality/value – This paper offers practical suggestions for parents and teachers on what signs indicate that an invitation might be warranted and for creating the right context for their invitation to be accepted

Respondents' Experiences of Completing a Retrospective Web-Based, Sexual Trauma Survey: Does a History of Sexual Victimization Equate With Risk for Harm?

This study investigated respondents' experiences of completing a retrospective web-based survey exploring sexual revictimization. The original survey provided a link to a separate mixed-methods survey assessing the impact of participation. Of the original 481 respondents, 234 completed this follow-up survey. Eighty percent were female and 52% reported histories of sexual victimization (SV). Newman, Willard, Sinclair, and Kaloupek's (2001) Reactions to Research Participation Questionnaire was adapted to suit this web-based design, and several open-ended questions were included. The statistical analysis revealed that those who experienced SV reported higher levels of distress and personal benefit and were less likely to be inconvenienced by participation. However, higher levels of benefit did not always compensate for greater levels of distress, particularly for those with more recent and more extensive histories of SV. The thematic analysis of the qualitative responses is discussed and suggestions are offered for the design of more ethically sensitive research protocols and practices

An improved thick-film piezoelectric material by powder blending and enhanced processing parameters

    No full text
This paper details improvements of the d33 coefficient for thick-film lead zirconate titanate (PZT) layers. In particular, the effect of blending ball and attritor milled powders has been investigated. Mathematical modeling of the film structure has produced initial experimental values for powder combination percentages. A range of paste formulations between 8:1 and 2:1 ball to attritor milled PZT powders by weight have been mixed into a screen-printable paste. Each paste contains 10% by weight of lead borosilicate glass and an appropriate quantity of solvent to formulate a screen printable thixotropic paste. A d33 of 63.5 pC/N was obtained with a combination of 4:1 ball milled to attritor milled powder by weight. The improved paste combines the high d33 values of ball and the consistency of attritor milled powder. The measured d33 coefficient was further improved to 131 pC/N by increasing the furnace firing pro-file to 100

Spectral characterisation of shortened pulse position modulation format

Shortened pulse position modulation (SPPM) is a new modulation format that has recently been proposed for underwater wireless optical communications. A full spectral characterisation of SPPM is considered and original expressions are presented, which are validated numerically for predicting both the continuous and discrete spectrum

Purpose. The purpose of this article is to study the role of Nikolai Mikhailovich Yadrintseva in the course of development of the Altai periodicals and its research and statistical activities in the Altai. Methodology. When writing the article were used General scientific methods like analysis, comparison, generalization. Results. As a result, the author analyzed the research, ethnographic and statistical activities of Nikolai Mikhailovich Yadrintsev in the Altai. Visiting with the research mission Altai, N.M. Yadrintsev published grandiose essays and articles not only about the ethnographic side of the Altaian “aliens”, but also was able to give his inhabitants a map of the locality and a detailed description of meteorological observations. The role of N.M. Yadrintsev in the development of the Altai periodicals and gives a general description of the newspaper “Eastern Review” under his leadership. Despite the fact that publications on behalf of N.M. Yadrintsev in the Altai were not preserved, with the exception of a small quatrain, he managed to raise the provincial periodicals to a completely new level. Together with Siberian correspondents, he was able to inspire a whole generation, as a result of which universities, museums and numerous Siberian publishing houses began to develop in the cities of Siberia. With the arrival of Nikolai Mikhailovich in the Altai, the periodical press noticeably developed and strengthened. Practical implications. The article can be used in the teaching of local history, the history of Russia and Russian journalism
