Is there a fundamental upper limit for the significance<i>I</i>/σ(<i>I</i>) of observations from X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments?

    No full text
The answer is yes. A fundamental limit exists, which is not strongly applicable to individual reflections but to a sufficiently large set of reflections such as any set for structure determination. The limit originates from Poisson statistics which gives a minimum (average) error. The proposed limit of significance and a proposed decrease in significance due to data processing are also tested by monitoring W = / for raw and for Bragg data. Since Poisson statistics are the lower limit for the experimental standard uncertainties, it is expected that W > 1 is physically impossible for sufficiently large data sets of unmerged reflections and W , , and of the observed set of intensities I(0) about the origin. These agreement factors are theoretically attainable when no systematic sources of error apply. They may be used in future to construct further measures of systematic error in experimental data.DFG [HE 4573/3-1

This book is a collection of 11 essays about research into the phenomena of leadership and other social processes of influence in organizations. After a context-setting introduction by Ken W. Perry and James R. Meindl, the main text includes the following essays: (1) "Salient Bias in Discussion and Research on Leadership" (Micha Popper); (2) "Aesthetics in Leadership" (Arja Ropo, Jaana Pariainen, and Niina Koivunen); (3) "Viewing the Dispersion of Leadership through a Power Lens: Exposing Unobstrusive Tensions and Problematic Processes" (Raymond D. Gordon); (4) "Influence, Institutional Theory, and Language: An Analysis of Popular Management Discourse on Downsizing" (Richard Dunford); (5) "A Grounded Leadership Theory with Insights into Entrepreneurship" (Lessey Sooklal and Dennis Hanlon); (6) "Building Theory in Leadership through Electronic Networking" (Patrick Duignan, Victoria Collins, Lyn Coulon, and Mike Fagan); (7) "Triangulation in Action: Integration of Qualitative and Quantitative Methods to Research Environmental Leadership" (Susan Herman and Carolyn P. Egri); (8) "Grounded Theory: Creating Valued Leadership Research through Partnering" (Craig A. Roberts); (9) "Reinterpreting the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire" (Melanie Kan); (10) "A Story of Missed Opportunities: Qualitative Methods for Leadership Research and Practice" (Jay A. Conger and Ginka Toegel); and (11) "Models, Methods, and Triangulation: Researching the Social Processes in Our Societies" (Ken W. Parry and James R. Meindl). No Full Tex

An Open Source Approach for Modern Teaching Methods: The Interactive TGUI System

    No full text
In order to facilitate teaching complex topics in an interactive way, the authors developed a computer-assisted teaching system, a graphical user interface named TGUI (Teaching Graphical User Interface). TGUI was introduced at the beginning of 2009 in the Austrian Journal of Statistics (Dinges and Templ 2009) as being an effective instrument to train and teach staff on mathematical and statistical topics. While the fundamental principles were retained, the current TGUI system has been undergone a complete redesign. The ultimate goal behind the reimplementation was to share the advantages of TGUI and provide teachers and people who need to hold training courses with a strong tool that can enrich their lectures with interactive features. The idea was to go a step beyond the current modular blended-learning systems (see, e.g., Da Rin 2003) or the related teaching techniques of classroom-voting (see, e.g., Cline 2006). In this paper the authors have attempted to exemplify basic idea and concept of TGUI by means of statistics seminars held at Statistics Austria. The powerful open source software R (R Development Core Team 2010a) is the backend for TGUI, which can therefore be used to process even complex statistical contents. However, with specifically created contents the interactive TGUI system can be used to support a wide range of courses and topics. The open source R packages TGUICore and TGUITeaching are freely available from the Comprehensive R Archive Network at http://CRAN.R-project.org/.

Synthesis and Characterization of Alkynyl Complexes of Groups 1 and 2

The synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of alkynyl lithium and magnesium is achieved, and different degrees of association are observed. Reaction of strontium amide nacnacSrN(SiMe3)(2)(thf) (nacnac=CH(CMe2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)N)(2)) with PhC CH in THF yields the dimeric alkynyl complex [nacnacSr(thf)(mu-C CPh)](2) which shows an interesting coordination geometry around the metal center. The compound retains the THF molecules, unlike its lighter congener, even in hydrocarbon solvents.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaf

Synthesis, structure, and theoretical investigation of amidinato supported 1,4-disilabenzene

Reaction of LSi-SiL (1) (L = PhC(NtBu)(2)) with diphenyl alkyne gave the first example of a room temperature stable 1,4-disilabenzene. The compound was characterized by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. NICS (nucleus independent chemical shift) calculations showed that the compound has some aromatic character.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft; Center of Materials Crystallograph
