Michael W. (Mike) Maier is Vice President, Space System Operations for PAE. In this capacity Mr. Maier serves as the lead executive overseeing PAE contracts that maintain and enhance space range and ground system capabilities for the United States Air Force and other customers. Mr. Maier also serves as president and program manager of InSpace21, the PAE and Honeywell joint venture pursuing the Launch and Test Range System Integrated Support Contract, LISC. Prior to this assignment, Mr. Maier was general manager of CSR, PAE’s joint venture partnership responsible for the Eastern Range Technical Services Contract. There he directed an $820M performance based contract responsible for the operation and maintenance of instrumentation, communications, and information systems required to command and control space launch and ballistic missile tests from the United States Air Force Eastern Range, 24 hour space surveillance, and base operations and logistics for remote stations across the Atlantic Ocean. While at CSR Mr. Maier led a staff of 950 employees located at seven sites in four countries operating in a multi-user, multi-contractor environment. Under his leadership CSR attained the highest award fee scores in the 25 year history of the joint venture with four consecutive 100% ratings and an unprecedented string of 205 countdowns spanning an eight year period without a launch scrub due to CSR people or systems. Before joining CSR in 1987, Mr. Maier operated and maintained ground based and airborne instrumentation as a member of the technical staff of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research laboratories in Coral Gables, Florida and Norman, Oklahoma. Mr. Maier holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Rollins College. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Metrological Society (AMS), Air Force Association (AFA), National Space Club, and Missiles, Space, and Range Pioneers.https://commons.erau.edu/stm-images/1026/thumbnail.jp

This book presents a coherent view of evolution which is organismal and historical, one that feeds from and respects tradition but looks forward in aiming at providing a documentation of patterns in which scenarios are presented and integration of anatomy, physiology and behavior is attempted. Not bad. It is a peculiar book, because it is in some details and formalities a little outdated, and yet it is quite timely in others. The latter does not come from the topicality of the subjects but because the approach and the historical take on problems are timeless—relevant today and hopefully in the future. This book is very personal as it is tied to the biography of its author, Wolfgang Maier. W. Maier (b. 1942) was Professor of Systematic Zoology at the University of Tu¨bingen from 1988 until his retirement in 2007, although he is still actively publishing academic research papers (Fig. 1). His previous work had been in Frankfurt, first as PhD student under the direction of the late Dietrich Starck (1908–2001), an anatomist who wielded substantial influence via his textbooks (e.g., Vergleichende Anatomie der Wirbeltiere) and his students, such as W. Maier. The academic history of W. Maier is recapitulated in a series of essays, and in fact the book presents modified versions of previously original research papers or essays along the career of its author. Many of the chapters are based on talks given in the context of ‘Ringvorlesungen’ at the University of Tu¨bingen, evening lectures for the general public. This book is organized in five sections, with several chapters in each: (1) methodology and science history, (2) phylogeny of animals, (3) origin and diversification of mammals, (4) selected aspect of head morphology, and (5) primatology and anthropology

The application and evaluation of adaptive hypermedia techniques in Web‐based medical education

This article discusses the design issues involved in delivering Web‐based learning materials. An existing application in the medical domain ‐ JointZone ‐ is used to illustrate how personalization and an interactive environment can be incorporated into Web‐based learning. This work applies the combination of an adaptive hypermedia, situated‐learning approach and hypermedia linking concepts to facilitate online learning. A usability study was carried out on the work described and an evaluation was undertaken to measure the effect of personalization on various learning factors. The evaluation outcome was analysed subjectively and objectively. The results proved to be contradictory but, nevertheless, the work gives new insights into the use of technology to support learning
