An uncommon presentation of fungal infection in Atlantic salmon fry
Fungal infection in fry from several families of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar are reported. Moribund fry had a conspicuous cranial defect that corresponded with 18.3% mortality. The lesion was characterized by a domed, epithelium-covered swelling centered over the optic tectum. The swelling was an oedematous reaction to the extension of a fulminating necrotizing mycotic stomatitis and branchitis into the cranial tissues including the ventral meninges. The genus and species of the fungal pathogen were not identified, although histological examination was consistent with an oomycete. The % mortality of fry in each separately reared family ranged from 1.0 to 63.3%. An analysis of variance revealed significant differences in mortality among families (P http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0899-7659&isbn=&volume=3&issue=3&spage=192&pages=192-197&date=1991&title=Journal%20of%20Aquatic%20Animal%20Health&atitle=An%20uncommon%20presentation%20of%20fungal%20infection%20in%20Atlantic%20salmon%20fry.&aulast=Hanke&pid=%3Cauthor%3EHanke%2c%20A%20R%3bBackman%2c%20S%3bSpeare%2c%20D%20J%3bFriars%2c%20G%20W%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19941200171%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3

Electrostatic energy calculation for the interpretation of scanning probe microscopy experiments
We discuss the correct expression for the classical electrostatic energy used while analysing scanning probe microscopy (SPM) experiments if either a conducting tip or a substrate or both are used in the experiment. For this purpose a general system consisting of an arbitrary arrangement of finite metallic conductors at fixed potentials (maintained by external sources) and a distribution of point charges in free space are considered using classical electrostatics. We stress the crucial importance of incorporating into the energy the contribution coming from the external sources (the `battery'). Using the Green function of the Laplace equation, we show in a very general case that the potential energy of point charges which are far away from metals is equally shared by their direct interaction and the polarization interaction due to charge induced in metals by the remote charges (the image interaction). When the charges are located close to the metals, there is an additional negative term in the energy entirely due to image interaction. The exact Hamiltonian of a quantum system interacting classically with polarized metal conductors is derived and its application in the Hartree-Fock and the density functional theories is briefly discussed. As an illustration of the theory, we consider an interaction of several point charges with a metal plane and a spherical tip, based on the set-up of a real SPM experiment. We show the significance of the image interaction for the force imposed on the tip
The Castaway is Building a Boat. An Overview of Robinson Crusoe’s Reception Threads in the Narrations of Holocaust Survivors
The author of the article attempts to review selected reception threads of Daniel Defoe’s The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) in connection to the Holocaust. Thus, it is shown what elements of the novel are updated in the context of the Shoah, which are blurred, and what this three hundred year old book has to say about the fate of other books and people of the 20th century. The English novel is used in the interpreted texts as a synecdoche (Primo Levi, Uri Orlev), apotropaic reading (personal testimonies, including memories of Hanke Grynberg) or the basis for creating apocrypha (poems by Dan Pagis and Jehuda Amichaj)
