How partnerships are taxed; How cooperatives escape the income tax; Patronage dividends: income distribution or price adjustment
Scans of letters to and from Federal Reserve member Marriner S. Eccles regarding an extemporaneous address at the 17th Biennial Congress of the Cooperative League of the U.S.A. in Chicago on 12 October 1950. The letters were from the weeks following the event, thanking Eccles for his speech and often asking for copies. Since there were no copies to share, Eccles instead sent a copy of the press release that summarizes the talk. Includes an exchange of letters between Eccles and G. M. Lester, President of the National Tax Equity Association (NTEA) from October 1950 to February of 1951. The latter sent three items that are here: a printed pamphlet (13 pages) by the National Tax Equity Association (NTEA) entitled "How cooperatives escape the income tax"; a printed essay by Albert W. Adcock entitled Patronage dividends: income distribution or price adjustment," reprinted from the symposium on cooperatives published as the Summer, 1948, issue of Law and Contemporary Problems by the Duke University Law School, pages 505 to 525; and a typescript (6 pages) also from the NTEA, entitled "How partnerships are taxed.

Solvolysis of (Z)-5-trimethylstannyl 2-adamantyl p-bromobenzenesulfonate: Mechanistic implications of a record-breaking secondary a-deuterium kinetic isotope effect for an SN1 substrate
The secondary α-deuterium kinetic isotope effect (α-kie) for the solvolysis of (Z)-5-trimethylstannyl 2-adamantyl p-bromobenzenesulfonate in 97% w/w aqueous 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (97T) at 25 °C has been measured (kH/kD = 1.33). The α-kie is abnormally high compared to the value of 1.23 for the corresponding limiting SN1 solvolysis of 2-adamantyl p-bromobenzenesulfonate, which proceeds via an extended ion-pair mechanism. A novel mechanism for the solvolysis of the tin compound is proposed that accommodates not only the high α-kie but also the absence of internal return.William Adcock, Neil A. PtM/C catalyst prepared using reverse micelle method for oxygen reduction reaction in PEM fuel cells
Synthesis of carbon-supported PtM/C catalysts (M = Co, Cr, or Fe) using a new preparation technique, a reverse micelle method, is reported. The catalysts were characterized by different surface techniques:? X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Surface characterization showed that Pt/M nanoparticles on catalysts were synthesized using the reverse micelle method. Pt/M nanoparticles were observed to be uniform spherical objects. The performance of the PtM/C catalysts was tested by the rotating disk electrode technique. A trend of catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was obtained:? PtCo/C(T, 500) PtCo/C(S) > PtCr/C(S) > PtFe/C(S) Pt/C > PtFe/C(T, 500) PtCr/C(T, 500), showing that PtCo/C-type catalysts had a higher catalytic activity for ORR
Importance of Entropy in the Diastereoselectivity of 5-Substituted 2-Methyladamant-2-yl Cation
The diastereofacial selectivity of 2-methyl-5-X-adamant-2-yl cations IX (X = CN, Cl, Br, CH3O, COOCH3, C6H5, CH3, and (CH3)3Sn) toward methanol was studied in the gas phase at 750 torr and in the 40-120 C temp. range and compared with that of IF (X = F) and ISi (X = (CH3)3Si) measured previously under similar conditions. Detailed anal. of the energy surface of the IMe (X = CH3) ion reveals that the activation barrier of its syn addn. to methanol is significantly lower than that of the anti attack. In the 40-100 C range, such a difference is strongly reduced by adverse entropic factors which are large enough to invert the IMe diastereoselectivity from syn to anti at T > 69 C. The behavior of IMe diverges markedly from that of IF and ISi. Large adverse entropic factors account for the predominant syn diastereoselectivity obsd. in the reaction with IF (X = F), notwithstanding the anti enthalpy barrier is lower than the syn one. Adverse entropy plays a minor role in the reaction with ISi (X = (CH3)3Si) which instead exhibits a preferred anti diastereoselectivity governed by the activation enthalpies. Depending on the electronic properties of X, the kinetic behavior of the other IX ions obeys one of the above models. The gas-phase diastereoselectivity of IX ions responds to a subtle interplay between the .sigma.-hyperconjugative/electrostatic effects of the X substituent and the activation entropy terms. .sigma.-Hyperconjugation/field effects det. the pyramidal structure and the relative stability of the syn and anti conformers of IX as well as the relative stability of their addn. transition structures and their position along the reaction coordinate. The diastereoselectivity of IX in the gas phase is compared with that measured in soln. and with theor. predictions
