Russell–Silver syndrome presenting as early asymmetric IUGR

No full text
We report a case of severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) which was diagnosed as Russell–Silver syndrome (RSS) postnatally. RSS (also known as Silver–Russell syndrome) is one of more than 300 recognised forms of genetic disorder that leads to short stature. Uniparental disomy for chromosome 7 (UPD7), i.e. inheriting two copies of chromosome 7 from the mother, and a change in methylation pattern (biochemical silencing of gene expression) of chromosome 11 are the most frequently associated chromosomal defects. A wide spectrum of appearances and symptoms are associated with the condition. Most characteristics are not easily identifiable with prenatal diagnostic ultrasound. The symptom most likely to be detected sonographically is IUGR. This case seeks to raise awareness of RSS, and encourages clinicians to consider uncommon genetic disorders such as RSS as a possible cause of early asymmetric IUGR. Justification of Induction: Russell and Jin Yuelin. A Comparative Study

No full text
Jin Yuelin (1895-1984), a Chinese logician and philosopher, is greatly influenced by Hume's and Russell's philosophies. How should we respond to Hume's problem of induction? This is an important clue to understand Jin's whole philosophical career. The first section of this paper gives a brief historical review of Russell and Jin. The second section outlines Hume's skeptical arguments against causality and induction. The third section expounds Russell's justification of induction by discussing his views on Hume's skepticism, causality, principle of induction, and empirical postulates. The fourth section clarifies Jin's justification of induction by discussing his critique of Hume's epistemology and his arguments for the reliability of causality and the eternal truth and apriority of the principle of induction. The final section compares Jin's justification of induction with Russell's and concludes that there are similarities and differences between their projects and that both their attempts fail. This paper takes the similar responses to the problem of induction by Jin and Russell to demonstrate the communication that there has been between Chinese philosophers and the Western ones.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000310146900004&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701EthicsHistory & Philosophy Of ScienceLogicPhilosophyA&HCISCI(E)0ARTICLE4353-3783

Political visions : George Russell, 1913-1930

No full text
THESIS 6067George Russell, poet and author, was a contemporary of W. B. Yeats and a figure central to the Irish Literary Revival. My thesis concentrates on his editorship of two journals, the Irish Homestead and the Irish Statesman, in the turbulent period between 1913 and 1930. I argue that Russell?s journalism enjoyed a cultural agency previously under-acknowledged by critics. Russell is now perceived to have been an eccentric, with mystical interests subsidiary to the main course of Irish nationalism. I contend rather that Russell was the central theorist of an Irish cultural doctrine subsequently obscured by post-Civil War political change. Russell\u27s periodical contributions were expressions of his commitment to an esoteric principle of Irish statehood, anathema to an increasingly orthodox Free State

__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis essay is a survey of the literature on Russell´s theory of definite descriptions from 1950 to 2005 approximately. The work presents arguments in favor of Russell´s theory and against it. In the first part, it is examined whether Russell´s theory is capable of accommodate the referential use of definite descriptions. In the second part, it is examined how it handles incomplete definite descriptions. The author of the essay believes that Russell´s theory has not been refuted and that most (but not all) of the criticism was properly met.Instituto de Ciências Humanas (ICH)Departamento de Filosofia (ICH FIL)Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofi
