CREATING SMART CITIES: SKILLS AND ABILITIES TO DEVELOP IN YOUNG PEOPLE

A human-centred approach to smart cities includes the development of skills that allow those who lead urban innovation to achieve positive social impacts. This work presents some of these skills, such as the ability to analyse territorial contexts, to conduct design activities, to adequately apply innovative technologies, for the benefit of a positive experience of the people themselves, as well as the ability to translate ideas in business projects

Cities as Complex Systems: Some Characteristics of the Hybrid Urban Spaces

    No full text
Cities can be considered as “complex systems”, since they are characterized by multiple connected elements and by relations among them not always recognizable. The massive presence of digital technologies in urban spaces that transform them into “hybrid” spaces makes cities even more complex. This article shows some of the challenges that arise in this new context (for example: rethinking the people experience in the urban spaces; developing new “urban competences” using in an effective way the large amount of produced data; focusing on the human aspects rather than the technological ones; thinking of sustainable solutions from the economic, social and economic point of view; etc.) and it proposes the application of collaborative design frameworks that can offer specific tools and methodologies to face them

Umanizzare le città. Riflessioni a partire dalla “vita quotidiana” di de Certeau

    No full text

Wolfsoniana Smart Museum. A Pilot Plant Installation of the PALM-Cities Project

    No full text
This demo paper describes the pilot plant of the PALM-Cities Project, installed at a modern art museum in Genoa. The objective of the system is offering visitors a novel and immersive experience when visiting the exhibit. In fact, owing to automatic identification technologies, such as Near Field Communication (NFC) and the Quick Response Code (QR Code), people can interact with the surrounding environment by means of their own devices, e.g., smartphones or tablets, receiving personalized contents as they move in a given location. Different resources for the same artwork in the museum are delivered to different users on the basis of their preferences, such as, e.g., language, age and device

Co-Designing Game Solutions for Hybrid Urban Spaces. How Game Elements Can Improve People Experience with the Mobility Services

    No full text
Digital technologies integrated in the physical spaces enable new practices that open new possible interactions between people and the urban public spaces. These emerging hybrid spaces might have a crucial role in the processes aiming at having a more satisfying urban life. Mobility is a field strongly impacted by hybrid urban spaces and this should be considered in order to improve the quality of life in cities. In this paper the authors, starting from the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS), show as game elements applied in different moments of the travel experience and disseminated in different elements of these hybrid spaces can enhance the interaction between people and mobility services. An example of this assumption is shown, by presenting the outcome of a co-design session, during which a game solution aiming at improving the people experience with the mobility services is identified

The role of design in supporting the continual emergence of hybrid spaces of interaction within the city

The high connectivity of people, things and ideas provided by ICTs has started a transformation of the physical aspect and the social relations of the city by creating hybrid spaces of interaction largely influenced by human factors. By assuming a human-centered perspective and providing tools and mental approaches suitable to tackle complex systems, the design has been contributing to this process. However the deep correlation between public spaces and social exchanges letting emerge new interaction patterns makes forewarn that, if aware, the design of hybrid public spaces would arguably lead to a sustainable development of future cities. It means dealing with complexity and at the same time with the participation of an increasing amount of people with different levels of expertise. So open and flexible tools derived from several disciplines are needed. As an example of what design for next would be, the paper shows some possible design frameworks
