    Research and development in building envelope design have promoted the convergence of two system types, Thermo-Active Building Systems and Adaptive Building Envelopes, that re- conceptualize the envelope as a distributed energy transfer function that captures, transforms, stores, and even re-distributes energy resources. The widespread deployment of Thermo-Active Building Systems as a building envelope will depend on several factors. These factors include the value of the design attributes that impact energy transfer in relation to the performance of the building envelope assembly and the return on investment that these attributes individually or in the aggregate can provide as a reduction in Energy Use Intensity.     Returning culture to peacebuilding : contesting the liberal peace in Sierra Leone

    This thesis investigates the advantages and limitations of applying culture to the analysis of violent conflict and peacebuilding, with a particular focus on liberal peacebuilding in Sierra Leone. While fully aware of the critique of the concept of culture in terms of its uses for the production of difference and ‘otherness,’ it also seeks to respond to the critique of liberal peacebuilding on the account of its low sensitivity towards local culture, which allegedly undermines the peace effort. After a careful examination of the terms of discussion about culture enabled by theoretical approaches to conflict in Chapter 2, the thesis presents a theoretical framework for the analysis of cultural aspects of conflict and peace based on the processes and effects of meaning-generation (Chapter 3), developing the conceptual apparatus and vocabulary for the subsequent empirical study. Instead of bracketing out the recursive nature of cultural theorising, the developed approach embraces the recursive dynamics which arise as a result of cultural ‘embeddedness’ of the analyst and the processes which s/he seeks to elucidate, mirroring similar dynamics in the cultural production of meaning and knowledge. The framework of ‘embedded cultural enquiry’ is then used to analyse the practices of liberal peacebuilding as a particular culture, which shapes the interaction of the liberal peace with its ‘subjects’ and critics as well as framing its reception of the cultural problematic generally (Chapter 4). The application of the analytical framework to the case study investigates the interaction between the liberal peace and ‘local culture,’ offering an alternative reading of the conflict and peace process in Sierra Leone (Chapter 5). The study concludes that a greater attention to cultural meaning-making offers a largely untapped potential for peacebuilding, although any decisions with regard to its deployment will inevitably be made from within an inherently biased cultural perspective

    Many readers would know the author of the voluminous music theory treatise 'Speculum musicae' as Jacobus Leodiensis or Jacques de Liège, although Johannes de Muris was thought for a long time to be its author. That is until Willibald Gurlitt recognized in the mid-1920s that the first letters of each book formed the author's first name: J-A-C-O-B-U-S. Yet nowhere does the treatise itself state that its author was from Liège. The grandiose sounding 'Leodiensis' was an invention of Jacobus's twentieth-century editor, Roger Bragard. The modern reputation of this magnum opus rests largely upon its seventh and last book in which the author takes to task the young ars nova Turks, arguing, sometimes vituperatively and venomously, that the dead composers of the ars antiqua had done things just as well without the new-fangled notes and other musical concepts, to which he mostly objects philosophically or theologically. Some modern authors left their readers with a fictitious image of an embittered old monk at the end of his life sitting alone in his cell in Liège (now in modern-day Belgium), penning his memories of a past musical glory while the world moved on around him. Richard Crocker, Oliver Ellsworth and, most recently, Karen Desmond sought instead to identify the author as Jacobus de Montibus, nonetheless still a canon in Liège. With the publication of Margaret Bent's book, this image, identification and indeed localization can no longer be assumed for the author of the 'Speculum'

    Retrievium – A Semantic Repository for Quantum Mechanical Structures

    Performing quantum mechanical calculations at high levels of theory is computationally expensive, but often identical calculations have to be repeated by other researchers because they don't have access to the results of already completed jobs. With Retrievium a repository for results of quantum mechanical calculations is currently under active development. Users will have easy access to optimized geometries, calculated energies, entropies, frequencies, etc. of thousands of structures. A set of novel structural similarity descriptors can be used to search for similar structures, which is useful to find a suitable template for new QM calculations in case the exact structure is not in the database. Semantic Web technologies will be used to index the stored information and to link them to external data sources like PubChem, ChemSpider and others. This will eventually allow to lookup experimental physical and chemical properties spectroscopic data (e.g. from NMRShiftDB) or crystal structures (e.g. from Crystallography Open Database or PDB). Ultimately this will not only give researchers access to pre-calculated results, but it will allow new forms of large scale meta-analysis

    The Institutional Framework for Doing Sports Business: Principles of EU Competition Policy in Sports Markets

    The competition rules and policy framework of the European Union represents an important institutional restriction for doing sports business. Driven by the courts, the 2007 overhaul of the approach and methodology has increased the scope of competition policy towards sports associations and clubs. Nowadays, virtually all activities of sports associations that govern and organize a sports discipline with business elements are subject to antitrust rules. This includes genuine sporting rules that are essential for a league, championship or tourna-ment to come into existence. Of course, ‘real’ business or commercial activities like ticket selling, marketing of broadcasting rights, etc. also have to comply with competition rules. Regulatory activities of sports associations comply with European competition rules if they pursuit a legitimate objective, its restrictive effects are inherent to that objective and proportionate to it. This new approach offers important orientation for the strategy choice of sports associations, clubs and related enterprises. Since this assessment is done following a case-by-case approach, however, neither a blacklist of anticompetitive nor a whitelist of procompetitive sporting rules can be derived. Instead, conclusions can be drawn only from the existing case decisions – but, unfortunately, this leaves many aspects open. With respect to business activities, the focus of European competition policy is on centralized marketing arrangements bundling media rights. These constitute cartels and are viewed to be anticompetitive in nature. However, they may be exempted from the cartel prohibition on efficiency and consumer benefits considerations. Here, a detailed list of conditions exists that centralized marketing arrangements must comply with in order to be legal. Although this policy seems to be well-developed at first sight, a closer look at the decision practice reveals several open problems. Other areas of the buying and selling behavior of sports associations and related enterprises are considerably less well-developed and do not provide much orientation for business.     Generally, less than 15% of tested bacterial isolates from US dairy manure samples are ARB, though for some bacterial species and antibiotics, higher prevalences have been reported.     Antibiotics Residues in Dairy Manure

    Antibiotics are chemicals that kill or impede bacterial cell growth. They are important medicines used by dairy farms to treat bovine bacterial infections, prevent infections, and to a declining degree to promote growth/milk production. When antibiotics are administered to dairy cattle, milk and meat withholding times are strictly followed to prevent antibiotic residues from entering the food system. Highly successful adherence to, and enforcement of, these regulations has resulted in only 0.01% of milk loads and 0.02% of dairy cattle slaughtered for beef testing positive for residues with protocols at processing plants preventing these products from entering the food chain.This material is based upon work that is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under award number 2016-68003-24601.
