George Vogt Interview, September 1984
George Vogt tells how his grandfather emigrated from Bavaria, Germany, to the United States in 1852, spending time in New York City and Michigan, before settling in Sula, Montana. He mentions his grandfather’s work as a miner in Phillipsburg, Montana, which provided him with funds to purchase land and livestock for his ranch in Sula. Vogt describes his father’s childhood growing up on the ranch and attending school in Corvallis. Vogt also describes the hardships of living in Sula where food was retrieved by horseback twice a year, the mail came once a month, and electricity wasn’t installed until after World War Two. He reminisces about his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Sula, high school in Hamilton, and graduating from college in Bozeman in 1929. Vogt discusses his 17 years of ranching with his wife Josephine McGlumphy Vogt, in addition to his career as a school teacher and sports coach.https://scholarworks.umt.edu/bitterrootvalley_oralhistory/1005/thumbnail.jp
