    De receptie van Madelon Székely-Lulofsin de Hongaarse pers in het interbellum Madelon Székely-Lulofs occupies a distinguished place in the history of the Dutch-Hungarian li­terary relations. Through her marriage with Hungarian planter and writer László Székely she was able to develop closer contact with the Hungarian literary world of the 1930s than any other Dutch author in this period. The Székely-Lulofs couple considerably contributed to the strengthening of the literary relations between these two countries: thanks to their translations in the 1930s and 1940s, the Dutch readership became acquainted with some of the most outstanding Hungarian writers of the time. Furthermore, they stimulated the popularity of the Dutch literature in Hungary by translating the works of Dutch writers to Hungarian. In this paper, I focus on how her works were received in Hungary in the 1930s and compare her Dutch and Hungarian reception.     Madelon Vriesendorp, esposa de Rem Koolhaas, foi a autora da maior parte das marcantes ilustrações que fazem parte integrante e indissociável da obra seminal deste arquiteto, Delirious New York (1978), especialmente a ilustração que lhe serviu de capa na sua 1ª edição. Até meados dos anos 1990, Madelon continuaria a colaborar com o OMA, da qual foi cofundadora, ilustrando vários projetos do ateliê para a sua apresentação a concursos e clientes. Com efeito, a obra desta artista holandesa é um exemplo completo das virtuosidades e potencialidades da ilustração no âmbito da arquitetura, nomeadamente a capacidade que tem de informar os mais diversos tipos de trabalhos arquitetónicos, sejam de puro texto teórico, sejam de projeto prático. Todavia, apesar de muitos ensaios sobre o papel do desenho na arquitetura, pouco pensamento existe sobre a relação entre a Arquitetura e a Ilustração. Assim, partindo da constatação desta lacuna, a presente dissertação propõe-se dar um contributo pioneiro para uma reflexão sobre as relações entre estas duas artes. Esse exercício será realizado através de uma análise à simbologia e aos códigos de representação gráfica da obra de Madelon Vriesendorp, informada em especial pela nossa conversa e visita ao seu apartamento-estúdio em Londres, e com destaque para as suas ilustrações no âmbito dos trabalhos de arquitetura teóricos e práticos do OMA como exemplo paradigmático da proficuidade dessa relação.Madelon Vriesendorp, wife of Rem Koolhaas, is the author of most of the striking illustrations which are an integrant, indissociable part of the architect’s seminal text, Delirious New York (1978), especially the illustration which was the cover of its 1st edition. Until the mid-1990s, Madelon would collaborate with OMA, of which she was co-founder, by illustrating several of the studio’s projects for their presentation to competitions and clients. Indeed, the work of the Dutch artist is a thorough example of the virtuosities and potentialities of illustration in the field of architecture, namely its capacity to inform the most diverse types of architectural works, either pure theoretical texts or practical design projects. However, despite many essays on the role of drawing in architecture, there is little thought about the relationship between Architecture and Illustration. Thus, from the realisation of this gap, this dissertation aims to give a pioneer contribute to a reflection on the relationship between these two forms of art. This exercise will be carried out through an analysis of the symbology and codes of graphical representation in the work of Madelon Vriesendorp, particularly informed by our conversation and our visit to her apartment-studio in London, and with special attention to her illustrations for the purpose of OMA’s theoretical and practical architecture works, as a paradigmatic example of the fruitfulness of that relationship

    From Promise to Practice: Evaluating the Health and Economic Impact of AI in Breast Cancer Imaging Surveillance

    Medical imaging systems generate vast amounts of data, demanding advanced methods for efficient analysis and interpretation. Artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated remarkable potential in this domain, enabling more accurate diagnostics, earlier disease detection, and personalized treatment planning. As AI technologies continue to transform healthcare, their integration into clinical workflows and evaluation by health technology assessment (HTA) agencies require rigorous evidence of clinical validity, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.The introduction of AI-driven tools into healthcare presents new methodological and practical challenges for HTA bodies, particularly in assessing their broader economic and clinical impact. Traditional health economic modelling approaches may not fully capture the dynamic and adaptive nature of AI systems, necessitating innovative frameworks that can evaluate both their short- and long-term value. Oncology provides an ideal setting to explore these challenges, given its complex treatment pathways and rapid technological innovation. Within oncology, breast cancer remains a major focus due to its global prevalence and the potential for AI-enhanced imaging to improve outcomes through more tailored surveillance strategies.This thesis examines how AI can add value to medical imaging and how its health and economic impact can be systematically assessed. A review of recent health economic evaluations of AI applications revealed that most studies have focused narrowly on short-term cost savings rather than broader health outcomes, with limited transparency and insufficient assessment of uncertainty. These findings underscore the need for more comprehensive and methodologically robust evaluations to guide the responsible adoption of AI in healthcare.Using extensive real-world data from Dutch national cancer registries and hospital records, this research explored variations in breast cancer surveillance practices and their adherence to clinical guidelines. The analyses revealed substantial inconsistencies in follow-up intensity, with some low-risk patients receiving more imaging than necessary. These patterns highlight the potential of AI-based risk prediction tools to support more personalized, risk-adapted surveillance strategies, optimizing resource use while maintaining quality of care.To further investigate AI’s potential, a dynamic discrete event simulation (DES) model was developed to assess how AI-enhanced mammography sensitivity and alternative surveillance intervals could influence patient outcomes and healthcare costs. The model, calibrated with empirical data and expert input, demonstrated that AI could reduce missed recurrences and improve early detection. However, threshold analyses indicated that, under current assumptions, AI would be cost-effective only if its incremental health benefits were sufficiently large or its implementation costs relatively low.Overall, the findings highlight both the promise and the limitations of AI in breast cancer imaging. While AI has the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and support more efficient, individualized care, current economic evaluations often fail to capture its full value, particularly non-traditional benefits such as improved patient autonomy, decision-making, and well-being. Future research should expand health economic frameworks to include these dimensions, ensuring that AI technologies are assessed not only for their efficiency but also for their contribution to more equitable, patient-centered healthcare

    ARM3D: A 3D printed transhumeral arm prosthesis

    Aim: This project aims to design a lightweight, inexpensive and easy to use upper arm prosthesis through improving the design of ARM3D, which is a 3D printed body-powered transhumeral arm prosthesis. This study will cover general shortcomings of body-powered arm prostheses as the weight, cost, amount of parts and limited accessibility of them. This study also focusses on a natural appearance of the prosthetic arm. Results: The improved design of ARM3D is made of six 3D printed and eight non-3D printed parts. It has three Degrees of Freedom (DOF’s), one control cable, a harness both to suspend and control the prosthesis, an active voluntary closing hand, a passive rotating wrist joint and a passive elbow hinge joint. The prosthesis costs €59,68 and weighs 403 g. It takes 3 days, 6 hours and 47 minutes to print and 15 minutes to assemble. The maximum open hand width is 64 mm and the prosthesis needs 15 N of tension force on the control cable to operate. Furthermore, it is possible to paint the prosthetic fingernails and to remove the nail polish. Conclusion: An improved design of the ARM3D prosthesis is presented in this paper. ARM3D is almost entirely 3D printed. It is a lightweight and inexpensive device. A field study is required to gather more information whether the prosthesis is easy to use.Biomedical Engineerin

    The eQTL and beyond: a cell type specific view on genetic variant-associated changes in gene (co-)expression in the context of Alzheimer’s Disease

    Understanding the role of genes and genetic variants is a key challenge in unraveling the driving mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Single-cell RNA sequencing is a technique that quantifies gene expression at the cell (type) level enabling investigation of the roles of different cell types in disease. We analyzed changes in gene (co-)expression associated with genetic variants using single-cell RNA sequencing data (>1.3 million cells) from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of 379 individuals of the ROSMAP cohort. Our single cell expression quantitative trait loci (sc-eQTL) analysis determined 3,337,065 sc-eQTLs, linking 1,882,645 SNPs to changes in expression of 8,057 genes in 7 major cell types. Next, we investigated the association of genetic variants with changes in co-expression for gene pairs (co-eQTLs), focusing on a set of variants and genes relevant to AD. Our novel non-parametric method for co-eQTL analysis compares gene co-expression distributions between SNP genotypes. We found 6,878 cell type specific co-eQTLs (variant-gene-gene combinations) relating to 18 AD variants. Although a substantial proportion of the findings is driven by eQTL effects, our method identified co-eQTLs that would not have been discovered in a correlation-based analysis. Most notable, we found variant rs13237518 (located in the TMEM106B gene) to associate with expression changes in a subset of 25 genes in excitatory neurons which is possibly indicative of higher-level disruptions related to the variant. Overall, we show that exploring genetic variant-associated changes in gene (co-)expression is a promising approach in finding cell type specific mechanisms that may be altered in AD.Computer Scienc

    The effect of anaerobic influent contact regime on granulation

    Nowadays the use of aerobic granular sludge, also known as Nereda™ in municipal wastewater treatment, is applied worldwide. The next innovation in for this technology is the implementation of granular sludge in continuous flow through configuration. However, many challenges will have to be faced before this technology can be applied in full scale wastewater treatment plants. One of these is the formation and behaviour of granular sludge in continuous flow reactors. In this study the start-up and steady state behaviour of two lab-scale bioreactors were compared on growth speed, granule size distribution, influent distribution and density. One of the reactors was run with an up flow feeding through the sludge bed, as performed in Nereda™ plants. The second reactor was run with a pulse feeding, followed by an anaerobic mixing phase. By combining data from image analysis with reactor cycle measurements, batch tests, PHA determination and density measurements, a classification of the granule size distribution and COD distribution over the granules was made. A comparison between the reactors could be made, as both reactors were exposed to the same conditions, except for their anaerobic influent regime. Both reactors were fully granulated at the end of reactor operations. The bed fed reactor had a faster average growth speed of granules due to the higher COD load on the biggest granule fraction. This selected for a higher mass fraction of granules greater than 1mm in diameter in the bed fed reactor. Both reactors seemed to suffer from diffusion limitation, as oxygen limitation was observed in the bedfed reactor, while the pulse fed reactor showed spatial COD limitation. Both reactors experienced some degree of P-limitation. The results from this study can be used to model granulation and granule metabolism of aerobic granular sludge exposed to different anaerobic contact regimes.Life Science and Technology (LST
