Emozioni e passioni in Georg Simmel e Jean Baudrillard

In the 1970s, with Arlie Russell Hochschild’s studies, human sciences re-evaluated the emotional dimension. Emotions are now considered a boost to individual action and socializing element. Analyzing the Jean Baudrillard’ work De la seduction (1979), this paper intends to highlight the important contribution the author can give to sociology of emotions. In particular, the aim of the work is to compare Baudrillard's reflection with that of Georg Simmel, a sociologist who first gave a more organic structure to the study of emotions. According to Baudrillard, in our society, subjects undergo the attractiveness and seductive force of objects. Baudrillard describes the domain of objects and the subsequent supremacy of cold emotions. Unlike Simmel, in Baudrillard: a) There isn’t interpersonal relationship; b) The subject is not emotionally involved. In Baudrillard, the man experiences new emotions: dominion, affection, anxiety. After comparing the different approach of the two authors, this paper assumes the birth of the man impatiens, a man who is surrounded by emotional situations and fast excitement. A man who lives a constant challenge in search of the best emotional performance

L'eredità di Jean Baudrillard a dieci anni dalla sua morte

Ten years after the death of Jean Baudrillard, this paper aims to rethink the writings and thought of this author, from the beginnings to the most recent works. The paper aims to show how the simulacrum can be an important concept for sociological analysis. As you will see in the last part of the paper, the concept of simulacrum is the explanatory and analytical key to social change. The paper proposes to structure the analysis of the concept on two levels: a phenomenological one, which investigates the manifestation of dimensions that characterize the concept in the various spheres of social action; 2. Macro-social. In this case, the perspective introduced by the simulacrum is a hinge between abstract culture and concrete society. As integrative and socializing key, based on aesthetic pleasure and taste

Procreazione Medicalmente Assistita e Maternità Surrogata: le emozioni in gioco

Sociological studies have not been very interested in the study of emotions. Sociological reflection has dealt with the existing literature, but there are few empirical studies. This document aims to present the analysis of data related to a small section of the research “Medically Assisted Procreation and Surrogacy: the new social imaginaries”. The research has taken place at the end of 2017 to 360 subjects (24-45 years old) residing in the Italian regions: Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Campania. The aim of the research was to understand whether or not there was a new social imaginary related to the techniques of PMA. In the survey there were some questions to investigate the emotional state of women who use PMA or who ask a surrogate mother for help. The data showed that the emotional area of the self emerges with high values in case the woman decides not to have children to prioritize her professional career. The data show that people involved in medically assisted procreation techniques experience very different emotions. The emotions they feel depend on their motivations and goals

The Supervision Process in Social Work: Emotional Dissonance and Acting

Being a social worker involves a heavy emotional burden, if we consider the implications of a social worker’s relationship with their clients. In their profession, they have to face the aspects of human life which involve most suffering, such as sickness, poverty, death, violence and hardship. Contact with these areas of human experience can become extremely wearing, to the point where an imbalance arises between the emotions normally required by their professional role and those they actually feel. This is why social workers are at risk of experiencing what Hochschild (2006) calls emotional dissonance. Based on these assumptions, the aim of the study which forms the basis of this article was to draw attention to how social workers handle the emotions their job evokes in them. Furthermore, we intend to investigate whether and how social workers dedicate time and space to reflecting on their feelings and emotions. To achieve the aim of the study, our analysis focused on four fundamental aspects in particular: - what emotions the social workers interviewed felt; - whether these emotions were considered a hindrance to their work; - what emotion management/regulation mechanism(s) the social workers interviewed deployed; - whether there was a supervision procedure in place at the facilities where the interviewees worked, and if so, how they viewed it. To answer these questions, we conducted thirty semi-structured interviews with social workers who work for care providers in the Veneto region of Italy. The study was carried out between November and December 2021. Confirming the studies already carried out on the topic (Leung, Mok & Wong, 2006; MoesbyJensen & Schjellerup Nielsen, 2015; Lavee & Strier, 2018; Reed & Ellis, 2020), social workers perform emotional labor using mainly surface-acting rather than deep-acting strategies. The data which emerged from the study show the need for coaching and training programmes designed to prepare social workers to understand the various nuances of emotions (Dore, 2019; Bini, Pieroni, Rollino, 2017). Gaining awareness of their own emotions are inherent abilities in every person, but little is done to cultivate and develop this ability in traditional training programmes (Sewell, 2020)

Ectogenesis. Beyond Traditional Parenthood, Within the Future Scenarios of Technology

    No full text
Ectogenesis recreates the entire gestation process inside an artificial womb, allowing it to take place outside the body. This technique, in line with other reproductive techniques (Medically Assisted Reproduction and Surrogacy), requires a new interpretation of motherhood and parenthood, even in symbolic terms, but also raises doubts about the boundaries of human physicality. This article presents an analysis of some data from the research project “Medically assisted reproduction, surrogacy, artificial wombs: new ethical and socio-cultural challenges,” part of the PRIN 2022 project “Genetic identity and child’s status in the era of medically assisted procreation”. Through the analysis of data collected via CAWI administration of 890 questionnaires to men and women over the age of 25, this study aims to understand the social imaginary surrounding reproductive techniques, particularly about the use of ectogenesis. As highlighted by the results, the analysis focuses on the transformations linked to parenthood, the figures and roles of father and mother, and the body-technique relationship. Data analysis shows that the traditional resistance that reproductive techniques have always generated seems to have diminished somewhat (Di Nicola et al., 2018). There is undoubtedly still a fear of pregnancy moving into the realm of the artificial, created not to eliminate unforeseen events or health problems, but which raises doubts about the outcome of this process, which could make the birth of a child completely artificial, from conception, with genetic selection, to childbirth

“La mamma vive sempre su un filo trasparente”. L’identikit della madre: verso nuovi immaginari?

    No full text
Medically Assisted Procreation and Surrogacy have changed the social imaginary that revolves around the idea of conception, family, father, and mother. With the introduction of the figure of the donor and/or gestational mother, it cannot be easy to define who the mother is clearly. The genetic link, the pregnancy, or the childcare activity may take on different importance in defining who the child’s mother is. The exploratory study presented here investigates what social imagery emerges regarding the mother figure in the traditional context and the context defined by reproductive techniques. To achieve this objective, forty women were interviewed, divided into two groups of equal size, according to whether they had experienced motherhood first-hand or had no children. The aim was to grasp what it means to be a mother for a woman today, but, above all, if and how much this imagery changes within the articulated scenarios resulting from PMA and GPA

It is not mine. Surrogacy between Natural Body and Artificial Body

Drawing on Jean Baudrillard’s approach and his process of simulation, which is a useful key for interpreting and analysing the natural body-artificial body dichotomy, this article aims to raise questions about the repercussions that the new culture of the body and the practices associated with the medicalization of maternity have on the construction of personal and social identity. The debate encompasses issues in the realm of bioethics, the presence or absence of human rights, contractual exchange, the processes of commodification of the body, women and pregnancy, and processes that manipulate human life. The scope of the observations thus extends to subjects such as bioethics, body ownership and the manipulation of life, to the point of questioning the construction of gender identity and even the very concept of mother. The objective of this study is to render the complexity of the issue of surrogacy and highlight the resulting theoretical challenges faced by the social sciences. It is still essentially exploratory in nature and is intended as a starting point for the development of this research topic, raising certain questions in an attempt to provide the sociological debate with new theoretical and empirical challenges

Tra "il sentire" e "il creare". Concetto di felicità e distinzione di genere

    No full text
