    Abstract: The introduction of diffusion models \u2013 artificial intelligence models originally used as text-to-image generators \u2013 poses several questions for the architectural design process. Firstly, could diffusion models enhance those design processes? Secondly, what is the relationship between innovative image generators and traditional methods of representation derived from projectional geometry? This paper studies the results of such an accelerated design process by 76 masters students of architecture, which lasted 6 weeks and covered the sketch, preliminary and final design stages. We define spatial interpretation moments as the inflection points the during human-machine interaction when the designer translates 2D images into 3D spatial design concepts. The spatial interpretation moments mostly occur in the transition from sketch to preliminary design and during preliminary design. Spatial interpretation moments\u2019 inherent opportunity is to use diffusion models both as a communication and a design tool to rapidly test spatial design intentions. This paper showcases examples of the captured spatial interpretation moments regarding the designer\u2019s ability to actively design and the impact of spatial dimensions, spatial composition and spatial abstraction. Moreover, this paper suggests the use of annotations to capture spatial interpretation moments for future research and proposes boundaries to investigate the relationship between diffusion models and other methods of representation

    Abstract: As tasks within the field of architecture and urban design become more complex, professionals tend to specialise in one of many subsets. They use digital tools which are developed for these specialised tasks only. Therefore, paradoxically, automation and new algorithms in architecture and urbanism are primarily oriented to simplify tasks within subsets, rather than engaging with the complex challenges the field is facing. This fragmented landscape of digital technologies and the lack of proper data hinder professionals\u2019 and developers\u2019 ability to investigate the full digital potential for architecture and urban design. This position paper argues for a different approach: to overcome fragmentation and discuss the preconditions for truly coping with complexity in design \u2013 which is not a visual complexity, nor the complexity of form, but rather a complexity of intentions, performance and engagement, constituted in a large set of parameters. We will substantiate our statement with experience in practice, reflecting on the Retrofit Project: our goal to develop a smart tool that supports the design of energy-neutral districts

    Abstract: The introduction of text-to-image diffusion models poses the question whether design processes could be accelerated: Can rapid intuitive image generation replace traditional representational methods? This paper studies the results of an accelerated design process, conducted by 68 master students of architecture divided into groups of 4. The students are presented with a design brief and asked to use Midjourney during the sketch design phase. The produced images would represent their architectural translation of the brief that should lead to a realistic \u2018buildable\u2019 project. This paper studies the design decisions and design criteria through the collected text prompts, images and questions into the used vocabulary, experiences and decision-making process, leading to the definition of textual and visual interpretation moments. Furthermore, the relationship between the textual and visual interpretation moments and their respective challenges are identified as a basis for further research into sketch design support and automation with diffusion models. Our paper provides insights into the potential of accelerated workflows in architectural design, identifying key inflection points in the process. This is significant as it provides part of the basis for understanding the role diffusion models might have in a 4th industrial revolution workflow of architectural design

    Abstract: In our paper, we show that, from an economic and environmental point of view, neighbourhoods could benefit from a circular architectural design approach, as creating an actual circular economy and community asks for more organisation than purely spatial planning. By using design as a driver both for a self-sustained economy and for architectural design, we provide a pathway for architects to be involved beyond their singular architectural design outputs We believe that our paper is significant in developing alternative, bottom-up mechanisms for developing and managing architectural designs and its afterlife. The dashboard and digital infrastructure developed through the paper can also be used by other researchers to expand the cases where our method can be applied

    Classification of artificial intelligence techniques for early architectural design stages

    Abstract: This paper provides a strategic classification of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques based on a systematic literature review and four levels of potential: the levels of input, output, collaboration and creativity. The classification demonstrates the potential and challenges of the AI techniques when used in early stages of architectural design. We aspire to help architects, researchers and developers to choose which AI techniques might be worth pursuing for specific tasks, optimising the use of today's computational power in architectural design workflows. The results of the classification strongly indicate that Evolutionary Computing, Transformer Models and Graph Machine Learning hold the greatest potential for impact in early architectural design, and thus merit the attention to achieve that potential. Moreover, the classification assists with building multi-technique applications and helps to identify the most suitable AI technique for different circumstances such as the architect's programming skills, the availability of training data or the nature of the design problem
