Parambassis serrata Dishma & Vishwanath, 2015, new species
Parambassis serrata, new species (Figs. 1−2) Holotype. MUMF 27381, 51.9 mm SL; India: Mizoram: Lawngtlai District: Kolo River, Kaladan drainage, 22 ° 22 ′ 42 ″ N 92 ° 59 ′ 56 ″E, 325m asl, Dishma et al., 3 May 2014. Paratypes. MUMF 27382−27392, 37.4–60.2 mm SL; same collection data as holotype; one paratype (MUMF 27390, 37.4 mm SL) dissected and stained for osteology. Diagnosis. Parambassis serrata is distinguished from its closest congeners by the combination of the following characters: a faint vertically-elongated brown humeral blotch; posterior margin of most spines of first dorsal fin proximally black in colour; absence of predorsal scales; 51−56 scales in lateral series; 14−16 dorsal- and anal-fin branched rays; a black longitudinal stripe on ventral surface of caudal peduncle; 17−18 gill rakers on first gill arch; 4−9 large serrae on preopercular ridge; and 11 pectoral-fin rays. Description. Morphometric data and counts are presented in Table 1. Body laterally compressed. Dorsal profile slightly arched from tip of snout to occiput, rising steeply up to first dorsal-fin origin, sloping ventrad towards caudal-fin base. Ventral profile convex up to posterior end of anal-fin base, then sloping dorsad towards caudal-fin base. Eye large, its margin free. Gill membranes free from isthmus; 6 branchiostegal rays. First branchial arch with 17−18 gill rakers. Nasal spine present. Preorbital ridge with 3−4 (12) retrose spine-like serrae, partly hidden beneath skin; preorbital edge with 4−8 (12) distinct, exposed serrae projecting ventrally; suborbital ridge not serrated. Supraorbital ridge with 3−6 (12) retrorse serrae, partly subdermal; preopercular ridge with 4–9 (12) large serrae. Lower edge of preoperculum with 7–14 (12) serrae, posteriormost ones largest; hind margin of preopercular with 10–18 (12) minute denticulations. Interoperculum smooth or with 2−7 weakly developed serrae (Fig. 3). Body covered by scales, except in predorsal region. Head naked, except 3−4 (12) scale rows on cheek. Lateralline scales 49−53 + 2−3 (12); 6 (12) rows of scales between lateral line and base of last dorsal-fin spine; ½ 4 / 1 / 4 ½ (12) scale rows across caudal peduncle. First dorsal fin with seven spines, second one longest; second dorsal fin continuous with first, with one spine and 14−16 (12) branched rays. Anal fin with three spines, third one longest, and 14−16 (12) branched rays. Pelvic fin with one spine and 5 (12) branched rays. Pectoral fin with 11 (12) rays. Caudal fin with 1 simple, 8 + 7 (12) branched rays and 1 simple rays. Gill rakers 17−18 (1). Total vertebrae 25 (1). Coloration. In 10 % formalin, head and body background creamish. A faint blackish axial streak on body, darker posteriorly. A small brown dot on each scale on dorsolateral surface of body. A vertically-elongate brown humeral blotch, more or less continuing immediately anterior to first dorsal-fin origin. Proximal posterior margin of most spines of the first dorsal fin blackish. Second dorsal fin with scattered melanophores on interradial membrane and bases. Pectoral and pelvic fins hyaline. Anal fin with scattered melanophores on interradial membrane. Ventral surface of caudal peduncle with a black longitudinal stripe. Caudal fin with scattered melanophores on rays and base. Distribution. Parambassis serrata is known only from the type locality, the Kolo River, Kawlchaw, Lawngtlai District, Mizoram, India (Fig. 4). Etymology. The species name alludes to the serrated preopercular ridge. An adjective. Habitat. The type locality, Kolo River (Fig. 5) has clear, shallow water with a depth of about 0.05 m to 1.0 m (during the month of April-May). It flows from southeast to northwest and the water is fast-running, with numerous riffles among the boulders and smaller rocks. The Kolo drains into the Kaladan River. Diagnosis. A species of Puntius with the following combination of characters: dorsal fin edge black, its spine weak, serrated posteriorly with 13-17 serrae, spine length 16.8-23.3% SL; predorsal scales 10 or 11; lateral line incomplete with 5-11 pored scales, 25-29 scales in lateral-line row; transverse scales ½4/1/4½; a black longitudinal stripe covering the upper half of the 1st scale row and lower half of the 2nd scale row above lateral-line row of scales; a black spot extending over 19th and 20th scales of lateral-line row at the level above the posterior end of the anal fin base; intestine long and coiled, its relative gut length 2.0-2.5 TL. Other differentiating characters from nearest congeners are in Table 1. Description. Table 2 presents morphometric data, and Table 3 presents frequency distributions of meristic characters. Body elongated. Head large. Eyes large. Barbels absent. Lips thin, no lateral fold on snout. Dorsal fin origin opposite that of pelvic fin, inserted midway between tip of snout and base of caudal fin; 3 simple and 8 branched rays; third simple ray spinous, weak, and serrated posteriorly with 13-17 serrae. Pectoral fin with 1 simple posteriorly serrated ray and 12 branched rays, almost reaching pelvic fin origin. Pelvic fin with 1 simple and 8 branched rays. Anal fin with 3 simple and 5 branched rays. Caudal fin with 10+9 principal rays and 9+8 branched rays. Scales large, 25-29 in lateral-line row; lateral line incomplete with 5-11 pored scales; ½4 scales between dorsal fin origin and lateral line row, 4½ scales between lateral line and pelvic fin origin. Predorsal scales 10- 11. Preanal scales 20. Predorsal bones 5 and predorsal neural spines 5. First pterygiophore inserted between 9th and 10th vertebrae. Number of total vertebrae 4+28-29. The infraorbital 3+4 is much broader and has greatly elevated margins compared to other bones of the infraorbital series. Intestine long and coiled (Fig. 2a), its relative length 2.0-2.5 TL. Colouration. In formalin, specimens have a black longitudinal stripe covering the upper half of the 1st scale row and lower half of the 2nd scale row above lateral-line row of scales, and a black spot on the 19th and 20th scales of lateral-line row, at the level above the posterior end of the anal fin base. Dorsal fin reddish, edged black. Pectoral, pelvic and anal fins reddish. Etymology. Named after the black longitudinal stripe on the body, derived from ‘ater’ (Latin), black. Distribution. Garra birostris Nebeshwar & Vishwanath, 2014 (Fig. 6) Garra birostris Nebeshwar & Vishwanath 2014: 104, fig. 5. Type locality: Dikrong River and Doimukh, Papum Pare district, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Holotype: MUMF 4302. Material examined. 1 Specimen, 88.7 mm SL, CNR 13037; Bhutan: Samdrup Jongkhar: Tikrikhola, D.B. Gurung & R.J. Thoni, October 20, 2013. Remarks. This species was encountered in a stream in southeastern Bhutan. It was identified by its prominent bi-lobed proboscis, tubercle pattern on the rostral lobe and depressed rostral surface, caudal-fin pigmentation, and overall body shape. There is a slight difference in snout shape when viewed ventrally compared to Nebeshwar & Vishwanath’s specimen, however, based on only one specimen, we cannot definitively separate it from G. birostris. It was collected in close proximity to localities in Arunachal Pradesh where Nebeshwar & Vishwanath collected G. birostris. It is possible that this species, and others described by Nebeshwar & Vishwanath (2014), have already been described by early ichthyologists who’s descriptions remain vague, and without holotypes. A species of Puntius with the following combination of characters: dorsal fin edge plain, its spine serrated posteriorly with 10-12 serrae, spine length 16.0-20.9% SL; predorsal scales 11-12; lateral line incomplete with 8-11 pored scales; 28-30 scales in lateral-line row; transverse scales ½5/1/4½; black blotch on caudal peduncle at level of one scale behind posterior end of anal origin; intestine coiled, its relative length 0.9-1.2 TL. Schistura nebeshwari, sp. nov. (Fig. 1) Holotype. MUMF 11128, 48.7 mm SL, male; India: Mizoram: Saiha District: from a stream at Phura village near Palak Lake (Koladyne basin); 22°15'32"N, 92°53'32"E, 161 m above sea level, Y. Lokeshwor et al., 8 April 2011. Paratypes. MUMF 11125–11127, 3 specimens, 47.2–54.6 mm SL, males; India: Mizoram: from Kolchaw River at Kolchaw (Koladyne basin); 22°23'89"N, 92°57'98"E, 146 m above sea level, Y. Lokeshwor et al., 1 April 2011.— MUMF 11129, 39.1 mm SL, males; data as for holotype.— MUMF 11130–11131, 2 specimens, 31.2–34.6 mm SL, females; data as for holotype. One paratype (MUMF 11126, 47.2 mm SL) was dissected for study of the intestinal coil and air bladder. Diagnosis. Schistura nebeshwari is distinguished from all other species of Schistura with a dorsal adipose crest on the caudal peduncle by the combination of the following characters: 11–14 dark olivaceous bars on the body, entire ventral surface of head with numerous small melanophores, an incomplete lateral line, three black spots at the dorsal-fin base, a complete prominent black basicaudal bar, lower jaw with a shallow median notch, no suborbital flap in males, an inflated cheek and deep caudal peduncle with prominent dorsal adipose crest. Description. General appearance as in Fig. 1. Morphometric data are in Table 1 and meristic characters in Table 2. Body relatively small, moderately elongate, slightly depressed anterior to dorsal-fin origin, compressed posteriorly. Dorsal profile of body slightly elevated from tip of snout at dorsal-fin origin, then straight up to end of dorsal-fin base, elevated towards middle of caudal peduncle, forming a prominent adipose crest. Head depressed, short, triangular in dorsal aspect. Snout slightly pointed in lateral aspect, long, its length about half dorsal head length. Interorbital distance narrow, about half length of snout. Dorsal fin with 3 simple and 8½ (6)–9½ (1) branched rays, its origin in advance of pelvic-fin origin, midway on standard length. Anterior distal margin of dorsal fin convex, posterior distal margin straight. Second branched dorsal-fin ray longer than remaining branched rays. Anal fin with 3 simple and 5½ branched rays, almost reaching caudal-fin base, separated from it by about one eye diameter. Pectoral fin sub-acuminate, with 1 simple and 9 (3)– 10 (4) branched rays, reaching midway to pelvic-fin origin. Pelvic fin sub-acuminate, with 1 simple and 6 (2)–7(5) branched rays, its origin on vertical through base of dorsal-fin branched rays 2 or 3, not touching anus when adpressed, separated from it by a distance about twice eye diameter. Axillary pelvic-fin lobe well developed. Caudal fin with 9+8 branched rays, deeply emarginate, lobes subequal, lower lobe a little longer than upper one. Caudal peduncle 0.7–1.0 times longer than deep, with a prominent dorsal adipose crest along its entire length, a low ventral adipose crest on its posterior half. Largest known size 54.6 mm SL (MUMF 11125). Body completely covered with deeply embedded minute cycloid scales except on chest and belly in front of anal-fin origin. Lateral line incomplete, with 49–66 pores, reaching vertical through anus or middle of anal-fin base. Cephalic lateralis system with 8 (1)–9 (6) supraorbital, 4+8 (1)–9 (6) infraorbital, 9 (3)–10 (4) preorperculomandibular and 3 supratemporal pores. Unculi blunt, low near margin of outer face of both jaws but slightly elevated on inner face, arranged side by side (Fig. 2). Taste buds low bumps, arranged sparsely on lips and barbels. Anterior nostril pierced anteriorly, a low leaf-like pointed tube. Mouth arched, 1.7–2.0 times wider than long. Lips fleshy, finely pleated. Lower lip with a deep broad median interruption with 2–3 furrows on interior edge on each side (Fig. 3). Upper lip with a narrow lateral and broad median potion, no median incision, with very low regular furrows on entire lip (furrows deeper near corners of mouth). Processus dentiformis prominent, broad. Lower jaw with shallow median notch. Barbels in three pairs, inner rostral barbel reaching corner of mouth; outer one reaching vertical through anterior margin of eye. Maxillary barbel reaching vertical through posterior margin of eye. Free posterior chamber of air bladder small, spherical, concealed beneath manubrium (Fig. 4a). Intestine with small a loop, a short distance from stomach (Fig. 4b). Sexual dimorphism. Males with slender body anterior to dorsal fin, slightly inflated cheek, deeper caudal peduncle with a prominent dorsal adipose crest, no suborbital flaps. Females with a low dorsal adipose crest, slightly deeper body at dorsal-fin origin. Coloration. In fresh specimens: body with 11–14 broad dark olivaceous bars on dull white background. Four or five black saddles on dorsum in pre-dorsal region, 3 in sub-dorsal and 4–6 in post-dorsal, each saddle continued on flank, forming broad bars. All bars on caudal peduncle meeting their antimere ventrally. Some of bars, especially at vertical through pre-anal region, split ventrally below mid-lateral line. Interspaces as wide as half of each bar. Head light olivaceous dark on dorsum, dull white laterally and ventrally; entire ventral surface of head with numerous melanophores. Three black spots at dorsal-fin base, first at bases of simple and first branched dorsal-fin rays, second at bases of branched rays 3–5, third at bases of branched rays 7–9. All fins golden yellow. Basicaudal bar black, broad, completed with an elongated backwardly-directed portion at dorsal extremity. In 10% formalin: all bars dark brown on light yellowish cream background. Fins dull white. Ventral portion of belly and ventral and ventro-lateral portion of head light yellowish cream. Distribution. Known only from both the Kolchaw River and a stream near Phura village near Palak Lake (the Koladyne basin), Saiha District, Mizoram, India (Fig. 5). Habitat. In southern Mizoram, this species is a typical inhabitant of brooks and streams with slow to swift current, among small pebbles, stones and boulders. The holotype was collected from a stream near Phura village near Palak Lake (the Koladyne basin), among small pebbles, in slow current. Three paratypes were also collected from the Kolchaw River near Kolchaw, Saiha District, Mizoram, India (Fig. 6). Other species occurring with Schistura nebeshwari were Bagridae: Olyra sp.; Cyprinidae: Barilius profundus Dishma & Vishwanath, 2012, Devario sp., Pethia sp., Garra sp.; Nemacheilidae: Schistura scyphovecteta; and Sisoridae: Glyptothorax jayarami Rameshori & Vishwanath, 2012. Etymology. The species is named after Kongrailakpam Nebeshwar Sharma in recognition of his assistance to the authors during the field work in Mizoram. It is a noun in the genitive case.
