Otterbein University Professor of History Anthony DeStefanis delivers a talk entitled, "Creating a killer: the Colorado National Guard, U.S. Empire, and the Ludlow Massacre". Speaking from a slide show DeStefanis describes the massacre of striking miners and their families committed by the Colorado National Guard in 1914 at Ludlow. He explains the basis for the strike, the role the militia played in breaking it, and the ethnic tensions that played a role. DeStefanis is introduced by Professor John P. Beck, MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum

Cryptocurrency ecosystems and social media environments: An empirical analysis through Hawkes’ models and natural language processing

Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). We analyse, using a mixture of statistical models and natural language process techniques, what happened in social media from June 2019 onwards to understand the relationships between Cryptocurrencies’ prices and social media, focusing on the rise of the Bitcoin and Ethereum prices. In particular, we identify and model the relationship between the cryptocurrencies market price changes, and sentiment and topic discussion occurrences on social media, using Hawkes’ Model. We find that some topics occurrences and rise of sentiment in social media precedes certain types of price movements. Specifically, discussions concerning governments, trading, and Ethereum cryptocurrency as an exchange currency appear to negatively affect Bitcoin and Ethereum prices. Those concerning investments, appear to explain price rises, whilst discussions related to new decentralized realities and technological applications explain price falls. Finally, we validate our model using a real case study: the already famous case of ”Wallstreetbet and GameStop”1 that took place in January 2021.Funding: No funding was received for this work

On wage formation: wage flexibility and wage coordination: A focus on the wage impact of productivity in Germany, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and the United States. MPRA Paper No. 31102, 29 June 2011

This paper discusses the endeavours of policy makers to come to some degree of wage coordination among EU countries, aiming at aligning wage growth with labour productivity growth at the national levels. In this context, we analyse the wage and productivity developments in Germany, the European Union’s periphery countries Greece, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain along with the US for the period 1980- 2010. Apart from the contribution of productivity to wages, we take into account the contributions of prices, unemployment, replacement rates and taxes by means of an econometrically estimated non-linear wage equation resulting from a wage bargaining model. We further study the downward rigidities of wages in depth. The findings show that in past times of low productivity, price inflation and reductions in unemployment put significant upward pressure on wage growth, also in the low inflationary period of the 2000s. Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain are far from aligning wage growth with productivity growth. German productivity is a major German wage determinant, but surely not the only one. To steer wages, policy makers can effectively use the replacement rate

Giona oltre Colombano: vita e contesto di un biografo

This article analyzes the literary persona of Jonas of Susa (or Jonas of Bobbio), author of the Vita of Columbanus, and his first disciples. Already before his death, Jonas was renowned as an eminent hagiographer. He acquired his fame not only in view of the importance of the saint whose story he had told, but also because of the literary characteristics of his work: its complex structure, the monumental and stylistically refined prologue, the frequent presence of the writer in the narrative. These features, together with what we know about Jonas’ life (mostly told by himself), suggest that he was a man of considerable social prominence; a correct interpretation of the scope and meaning of his Vita Columbani, therefore, must also take into account these elements

Beveridge curve, job matching and labour market dynamics: a multi-level empirical analysis

2007 - 2008The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the debate on the Beveridge Curve: more specifically, after providing a theoretical introduction to the Curve in Chapter I, we focus on some empirical points, concerning globalisation and technological progress, which the international empirical literature has not dealt with closely (Chapter II), and on a level analysis which no previous study has dealt with in the Italian literature (Chapter III). Chapter I centres on the matching approach founding the studies on the Beveridge Curve since the late 1970's, it also mentions the recent production frontier approach and gives a look to the possible consequences of the Great Recession on the matching process and the Curve. The aim of Chapter II is to test the existence of a Beveridge Curve analysing the economies of nineteen OECD countries from 1980 to 2004, and to investigate whether and how technological progress and globalisation affect the unemployment-vacancies trade-off. Indeed, in the literature concerning the Beveridge Curve, only a few contributions (Pissarides, 1990; Aghion and Howitt, 1994) have examined the role of technological progress as a significant shift factor for labour market performance. However, there is no unanimity about the sign of its impact. Furthermore, few economists would deny that globalisation, that is the growing international interdependence in communications, trade, finance, labour markets (migration), social systems, is one of fundamental socio-economic phenomena of this turn of century. Consequently, globalisation is another factor which is expected to impact on the Beveridge Curve, but no full-fledged estimation has, to the best of our knowledge, ever been carried out of this nexus. We can sum up the main results as follows: a) we find largely favourable evidence for the existence of a OECD Beveridge Curve; b) lagged values of technological progress impact positively on unemployment and shift the Beveridge Curve outwards, producing evidence in support of the creative destruction effect; c) lagged values of the globalisation index have a positive impact on unemployment, also shifting the Beveridge Curve outwards; d) a critical econometric issue, extremely neglected by the previous literature, is represented by endogeneity, as shown by tests and other kind of evidence. Finally, Chapter III focuses on the Italian labour market. There are not many studies that have analyzed the Beveridge Curve in Italy, likely because of the lack of official data on vacancies. Moreover, no previous study has focused specifically on a regional level analysis of the Beveridge Curve. Chapter III aims at filling this gap of the literature using quarterly data for the 1992-2009 period. In particular, the ISAE labour scarcity indicator, which is available for all the regions, is used to build regional vacancy rates. Like in Destefanis and Fonseca (2007), we also investigate the impact on matching efficiency of the recent strong development in the number of so-called atypical jobs (both part-time and temporary)… [edited by author].VII n.s

[a cura dell'Autore]The thesis focuses on the increasing of Sharing Economy and Value Co-creation. The importance of this new consumption pattern is highlighted in the thesis also in an economic sector of strategic importance for the country, namely the tourism and hospitality sector. Three essays on state budget rules and procedures

2012-2013In Common pool models fiscal outcomes are determined by the decision-making rule that is used to aggregate conflicting interests into a single budget. The rules according through which the budget is prepared, approved and carried out can affect spending bias. The idea is that the common pool problem may manifest itself during different phases of the budgetary process. This thesis analyzes a model in which the Ministry of Finance internalizes the Common pool externality of the budget. From an institutional point of view this assumption is realistic because it takes into account the budget institutional equilibrium. Formally, this is reflected in the assumption that the Ministry of finance maximizes his utility function à la Stackelberg. In Stackelberg equilibrium leader’s expenditures choice is grater than in Cournot-Nash result, while the deficit bias is lower due to agenda setting power over spending ministries. Essays on Human Capital, Long Run Growth and Comparative Development

[a cura dell'Autore]This research argues that di erences in the distribution of human capital across countries and their impact on the advancement and the adoption of technology contributed to the di erential timing of the transition from the Malthusian stagnation to modern growth and the persistent di erences in income per capita across the globe. Polarization in the distribution of hu- man capital within an economy implied a trade-o between innovation and adoption of technologies that, in turn, in uenced the transition from stag- nation to growth. Despite the contribution of the upper tail of the human capital distribution to technological innovation, the absence of wide group of educated individuals among the working population delayed technology adoption and the transition from stagnation to growth.
