Corvino + Multari. Architecture in dialogue with the city

    No full text
The book reconstructs thirty years of activity of architects Vincenzo Corvino (1965) and Giovanni Multari (1963) in the form of a dialogic tale: award-winning buildings and projects, but also a story about the profession of architect. In six chapters, the “why” and “how” of a design approach that is both pragmatic and experimental, always rigorous and moved by a strong ethical tension, which conceives architecture as a dialogue with the city, the landscape and every pre-existence, are highlighted. Both in the restoration, reuse and completion of existing buildings, which represent a substantial part of their work, and in new buildings such as schools, residences, churches, sports facilities, shopping centres and offices, their architecture always originates from a critical interpretation of the urban or landscape context. Recent years have seen the Corvino + Multari studio take on prestigious commissions such as the restoration of the Capodimonte Museum in Naples (2020-2025) and the new Italian Embassy in Nairobi (2022-2028), while increasing diversification characterises complex urban regeneration projects in Mantua, Livorno, Cagliari, Messina and Brescia. In dialogue with the volume's editor, Corvino and Multari explain how, in the face of the great challenges of ecological transition and urban redevelopment, the social role and profession of the architect must be profoundly renewed: less and less an author, far from any demiurgic ambitions, the architect must take on the role of sensitive interpreter and director in increasingly complex design groups

Foreword. Dialogic criticism for Contemporary Chinese Architecture

    No full text
To understand the meaning of contemporary Chinese architecture it seems essential to take into account the mutual game between different points of view, considering the architectural work as a “polyphonic” narrative structure. The research work needs to be based on a principle of critical dialogue—between the observer and the work, between the work and its author, between the architects and the technical intermediary bodies, between the developers and the state bureaucratic apparatus— following the methodological lesson of the Dialogic Criticism of Mikhail Bakhtin. In his original book, Alberto Bologna proposes to observe the condition of contemporary architecture in China from an original point of view. He narrows down the scope of its critical analysis to a few exemplary buildings made of exposed concrete built in the last twenty years and reveals, with a thorough investigation, their expressive qualities and construction reasons. He has the merit of inaugurating a new way of conceiving the criticism of contemporary architecture in China, starting from the materiality of the buildings and the analysis of the conception and realization process

Modern and Site Specific. The Architecture of Gino Valle 1946-2003

    No full text
This edition makes available for the first time in English the only critical monograph dedicated to the work of Gino Valle, realized with Luka Skansi with an enormous support of Piera Valle and Pietro Valle. Since his early buildings in the 1950s at Udine in Friuli, northeast Italy, Gino Valle has been recognized by international critics as Joseph Rykwert (author of a Foreword to the book) and Reyner Banham as one of the most original and creative European architects of the post-war period. His artistic talent, associated with a great intellectual curiosity and a genuine passion for new construction systems, led Valle to develop an architectural work that was resolutely open and multiform. His buildings make valuable contributions to debates about the relationship between new architecture and historic surroundings, between industrial and open landscape, urban design and architectural intervention

    No full text

TERRITORIO INCERTO - RISCHI COSTIERI - ADATTAMENTO/RESILIENZA TURISMO E MIGRAZIONE CLIMATICA - ANTICIPAZIONE E RICOMPOSIZIONE URBANACoastal departments are becoming saturated, while climatic conditions are deteriorating. In time, the Var coast will face various changes induced by : the climate, the rise of the waters, the trends of settlement, but also the modification of the economy and the main activities... The spatial recomposition of the entire coastline is inevitable, in order to plan the risks, and to put in place operational measures over the short, medium and long term. It seems to me appropriate to consider today, credible and diversified scenarios in order to face the risks, and, the establishment of an urban and landscape system that could continue despite the change of the environment and society. This Graduation Project report is used to collect and explore solutions for coastline. The commune of Le Lavandou is a pretext to rethink our relationship to time, and to the way we live with the risks of nature. Ionotropic receptors (IRs): chemosensory ionotropic glutamate receptors in Drosophila and beyond.

    No full text
Ionotropic Receptors (IRs) are a recently characterized family of olfactory receptors in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. IRs are not related to insect Odorant Receptors (ORs), but rather have evolved from ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs), a conserved family of synaptic ligand-gated ion channels. Here, we review the expression and function of IRs in Drosophila, highlighting similarities and differences with iGluRs. We also briefly describe the organization of the neuronal circuits in which IRs function, comparing and contrasting them with the sensory pathways expressing ORs. Finally, we summarize the bioinformatic identification and initial characterization of IRs in other species, which imply an evolutionarily conserved role for these receptors in chemosensation in insects and other protostomes

Cellular diversity in the Drosophila midbrain revealed by single-cell transcriptomics

    No full text
To understand the brain, molecular details need to be overlaid onto neural wiring diagrams so that synaptic mode, neuromodulation and critical signaling operations can be considered. Single-cell transcriptomics provide a unique opportunity to collect this information. Here we present an initial analysis of thousands of individual cells from Drosophila midbrain, that were acquired using Drop-Seq. A number of approaches permitted the assignment of transcriptional profiles to several major brain regions and cell-types. Expression of biosynthetic enzymes and reuptake mechanisms allows all the neurons to be typed according to the neurotransmitter or neuromodulator that they produce and presumably release. Some neuropeptides are preferentially co-expressed in neurons using a particular fast-acting transmitter, or monoamine. Neuromodulatory and neurotransmitter receptor subunit expression illustrates the potential of these molecules in generating complexity in neural circuit function. This cell atlas dataset provides an important resource to link molecular operations to brain regions and complex neural processes
