Replication Data for: When politicisation meets ideology: the European Parliament and Free Trade Agreements
Since the Lisbon Treaty, the European Parliament (EP) has considerably increased its competencies in European Union (EU) trade policy. At the same time, a “new generation” of Free Trade Agreements (FTA), including the TTIP with the United States, CETA with Canada and the agreement with Japan, have been negotiated by the European Commission. Whereas existing literature has tackled the process of the EP's institutional self-empowerment in this policy area, there is no systematic research investigating the lines of conflict within the EP over FTAs. Through a newly collected dataset of all EP plenary debates between 2009 and 2019 on six relevant FTAs, we extract MEPs preferences by means of a manual textual analysis. We then test the explanatory power of the two traditional lines of cleavages within the EP over MEPs stated preferences: position on the left-right axis and support for EU integration. We find that both these dimensions fundamentally shape the conflict in the EP over FTAs. The impact of these two ideological cleavages is magnified in the context of politicised FTAs, namely the TTIP and CETA. Through these findings, the article significantly contributes to the research on competition in the EP and, more broadly, to the understanding of EU trade policy and its emerging politicisation dynamics
Italian Political Parties and Military Operations: An Empirical Analysis on Voting Patterns
Since the end of the bipolar era, the military activism of several Western powers has raised questions about parliamentary control, fostering growing research and analyses on the features, drivers and consequences of the different kinds of oversight exercised by legislative assemblies. Within this scholarly debate, this article focuses on the understudied case of Italy. How did Italian parties vote on military operations abroad in the post-Cold War era? In order to answer this question, the article presents the first detailed and comprehensive set of data on parliamentary votes over the deployment of the Italian armed forces in the post-Cold War era (i.e. from the beginning of the 1990s to the recent operation against ISIL). Thanks to this extensive new empirical material, the article assesses selected arguments developed by the literature on political parties and foreign policy, paving the way for further research
Guided acoustic propagation modelling for platelike multilayered structures.
In this paper a simulation model is presented for acoustic guided wave propagation, which was developed from a technique widely reported inthe literature as the 'transfer matrix method'. This model describes the phenomenon of ultrasonic guided wave propagation in stacks of anisotropic laminae in an extremely synthetic form and under a large variety of boundary conditions. Acoustic guided wave propagation is a powerful tool for Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of plate-like structures (e.g. composites or films deposited on substrates) because the dispersive nature of the propagation modes gives a signature of the actual material state. Thus the model presented in this paper can be effectively used in NDT applications
Laminar material characterization by ultrasonic wide-band measurements of Lamb waves disperison curves
A measurement technique to obtain dispersion curves for guided acoustic modes in laminated plate-like materials is described. The measurement is performed by means of two angled ultrasonic longitudinal transducers positioned on the plate surface with dry contact coupling, in a pitch catch configuration. Dry contact coupling ensures higher signal to noise ratios than immersion techniques. The excitation signal of the transmitting transducer is a wide band pulse. Thus all the frequencies contained in the pulse-band are simultaneously used to excite the guided modes
Figure 1 in Scorpiofauna of Kashan (Esfahan Province, Iran) (Arachnida: Scorpiones)
Figure 1: Map of Iran showing the position of Kashan (+). The large natural dispersal barriers are represented by straight lines which show the "biogeographical canal" inside which Kashan is situated. The "canal" is formed by the western part of Alborz Mountains (1), the western borders of Kavir Desert (2) and Lut Desert (3), and the eastern part of the Zagros Mountains (4).Published as part of Vignoli, Valerio, Kovařík, František & Crucitti, Pierangelo, 2003, Scorpiofauna of Kashan (Esfahan Province, Iran) (Arachnida: Scorpiones), pp. 1-7 in Euscorpius 9 on page 3, DOI: 10.18590/euscorpius.2003.vol2003.iss9.1, http://zenodo.org/record/464906
Mesobuthus eupeus
Mesobuthus eupeus (C. L. Koch, 1839) Specimens. 1 adult ♂, No. 13 (FKCP), Aziz Abad, 10 August 2000; leg. V. Vignoli & P. Crucitti. Comments. This species of Buthidae has an enormous geographic range in the arid zone of Asia (Kovařík, 1997; Gromov, 2001), and is considered as one of the most common species in the entire Iran (Farzanpay & Pretzmann, 1974; Tirgari & Zargan, 2002).Published as part of Vignoli, Valerio, Kovařík, František & Crucitti, Pierangelo, 2003, Scorpiofauna of Kashan (Esfahan Province, Iran) (Arachnida: Scorpiones), pp. 1-7 in Euscorpius 9 on page 3, DOI: 10.18590/euscorpius.2003.vol2003.iss9.1, http://zenodo.org/record/464906
Guided acoustic wave propagation for porcelain coating characterization
In this paper a measurement technique to obtain dispersion curves for guided acoustic modes in porcelain-coated steel is described. The measurement is performed with two angled ultrasonic longitudinal transducers in a pitch catch configuration by employing an immersion technique. Phase velocities for the guided modes are selected through the variation of the angle formed by the transmitter beam with the surface normal vector. The excitation signal of the transmitting transducer is a narrow band pulse. For each phase velocity, the guided mode frequencies are recovered by evaluating the frequency minima of the reflection coefficient
Does CFSP co-ordination foster convergence? Voting behavior on nuclear weapons at the UN General Assembly
Although the European Union (EU) has sought to promote the approximation of the foreign policy positions of member states since it established its Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) with the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992, the impact of this intergovernmental forum has long been questioned. Recent developments putting the CFSP under strain such as the weakening transatlantic link, Russian attempts to undermine EU foreign policy unity, and the rise of Eurosceptic populist parties call for a reassessment of its convergence-fostering effect. We investigate convergence by looking at EU voting behavior on resolutions on nuclear weapons—a controversial area due to deep divisions among member states—at the United Nations General Assembly from 1979 to 2022. We show that while convergence among CFSP participants hardly increases, the level of consensus remains stable, in a departure from the theoretical expectations of mainstream accounts of EU foreign policy
A 125 MHz ECL digital oscillator synchronizable both in frequency and in phase.
In this paper a 125 MHz digital oscillator with good frequency stability and instantaneous phase lock capability is presented. The circuit, that was developed using the Motorola “ECLPS” and “ECLPS lite” logics, allows a frequency lock independent of the phase lock, which is a feature not present in conventional PLL circuits
