Famed author Dr. Seuss (a.k.a. Theodor Geisel) is known and loved for his whimsical children\u27s stories such as The Cat in the Hat and Fox in Socks. Serious students of Seuss might be aware of his tendency to include profound moral commentary in his deceptively simple tales such as in The Sneetches (racial tolerance), The Lorax (environmental responsibility), and The Butter Battle Book (nuclear war). Few of Dr. Seuss\u27 many fans, however, are aware of Ted Geisel\u27s stint (1941-1943) as a World War II political cartoonist for New York\u27s left wing newspaper, PM. This ignorance is exactly what Richard M. Minear, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, aims to change through his book, Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel

The wondrous word(k)s of Theodor Seuss Geisel: The employment of surrealist thought to express messages in children's literature

Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) is commonly seen as a prominent author of children's literature. His books, in particular his "Big Books," which were written for an "older child" audience, contain ideas and messages that reflect historical and social events, and refer to historical personages. This thesis argues that through the use of surrealist literary and artistic techniques, Dr. Seuss conveyed socially significant and critical ideas in his books. I constructed a coding scheme and analyzed two books written by Dr. Seuss for an adult audience and five "Big Books" chosen according to their context in relation to important socio-historical events and in relation to Geisel's biography. The illustrations and writing techniques were then compared to surrealist ideas and examples of surrealist illustrations. I also analyzed the social and political themes in Dr. Seuss' books in relation to the political ideas of Populism, Progressivism, and Liberalism with a special focus on Roosevelt's New Deal. Through these images and narratives, the works of Dr. Seuss extend beyond simple children's stories to include social, political, and moral messages consistent with a populist and progressive politics

Assigned to the Animation Department, First Motion Picture Unit, in Hollywood, California, USA, Geisel worked with a creative team of artists, cartoonists, writers, and filmmakers. Among them was Munro Leaf, an- other prolific author of childrens\u2019 books, including The Story of Ferdinand.
