    No full text
This study analyzes Ibn Jinni’s role and contribution to Arabic semantics by surveying his ideas and opinions presented in his books, such as “al Muhtasab”- The Treasurer-, “al-Hasa’is”-The Particularity-, and “al- Munsif”-The Just Man. It discusses Ibn Jinni’s opinions on certain issues of semantics, such as, social semantics, morphological semantics, phonetic semantics, and grammatical semantics

    Martial between Rome and Bilbilis

    No full text
This article traces and synthesizes the complex representation of the motif city-countryside in Martial’s epigrams, taking into account its different, sometimes contradictory, aspects. These aspects, so far looked at either out of context or only within the framework of single books, are brought together and, above all, are seen in their different functions (especially the self-fashioning of the author) and diachronic development. Section 2 starts from Epigram1.49 to demonstrate the fluctuating evaluation of the appropriateness or otherwise of a life in the city or countryside, depending on one’s age, the alternation of one’s activities or perspective (patron or poet). Section 3 explores the tension between fond ideas of leaving the city behind and the ‘reality’ of being in provincial surroundings, unconducive to poetry, where positive evaluations of the countryside are lacking. In section 4, I explore Books 4–9 where otiumis sometimes situated in an urban context, while the opposition to life in the countryside recedes into the background. In so far as the relationship between city and coun-tryside plays a role, they are harmonious. By contrast, Book 10 returns to the motifs encountered in Books 1–2, but here they become more complex and problematic as they are linked to Martial’s move from Rome to Celtiberia (section 5). In Book 12, as earlier in Book 3, the dominant opposition is that between Rome and not-Rome (section 6). I conclude that the picture of a Martial constantly and consistently dreaming of a countryside existence must be adjusted: the depiction of city and countryside is not constant over the course of Books 1–12 but changes in accordance with the construction of the poet’s identity and his history within the text

Interstitials in tetrahedrally close-packed phases: C, N, O, and F in ?-tungsten from first principles

Several tetrahedrally close-packed (tcp) phases, such as ?-W, ?-Ta, and ?-U, are believed to be stabilized by impurities. Here we analyze the various ways in which impurities can be dissolved in tcp structures paying special attention to interstitial configurations in the ?-W (A15) structure. We find that at most there are only seven interstitial positions possible. Through ab initio calculations we show that common impurities such as C, N, O, and F, dissolve interstitially in ?-W and that N, O, and F interstitials prefer the same position in the ?-W (A15) structure.Materials Science and EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

Anonymizing Agents of Change in Philosophical Pseudepigraphy:The Case of Pseudo-Plato, De virtute

    No full text
In this chapter I present 'anonymization' as an authorial strategy in ancient philosophical discourse. The author the pseudo-Platonic dialogue 'On Virtue' employs this strategy in order to minimize resistance to philosophical innovation. As an agent of change, the author conceals his own agency in order to integrate his innovative work more smoothly and unobtrusively into the Platonic corpus. I focus in particular on the textual feature of repetition as a means to achieve this kind of anonymization: the author of De Virtute systematically points to Plato’s Meno, a familiar text to which his intended readers are already committed. This authorial self-effacement in De virtute functions as an anchoring strategy for the successful introduction of change

A new genus in the sub-family Semperiellinae is described: Triasemperia O Loughlin. Six new species of dendrochirotids are described with O Loughlin as author: Actinocucumis solanderi, Cladolabes arafurus, Globosita elnazae, Massinium bonapartum, Massinium keesingi, Triasemperia stola. Genera Actinocucumis Ludwig, Cladolabes Brandt, Globosita Cherbonnier and Massinium Samyn and Thandar are discussed. Species listed by Heding and Panning as synonyms of Actinocucumis typica Ludwig are raised out of synonymy: Actinocucumis cornus (Heding); Actinocucumis difficilis Bell; Actinocucumis longipedes Clark; Pseudocucumis quinquangularis Sluiter; Actinocucumis simplex (Sluiter). Actinocucumis donnani Pearson is incertae sedis. We provide a table of some distinguishing morphological characters for species of Globosita, and a key for distinguishing the species of Massinium
