Il passe inaperçu, sans doute en raison de sa construction élaborée et de son caractère déroutant : Raymond Queneau, dans son avant-propos à L’Arrache-cœur , le qualifie d’« œuvre difficile et méconnue ». Ce livre apporte à Boris Vian une des rares satisfactions qu’il ait connues dans le domaine romanesque lorsqu’il est réédité aux Éditions de Minuit par Alain Robbe-Grillet en 1956. Il rencontre alors un succès d’estime chez certains critiques, bien que sa diffusion reste limitée
