Pietro Verri’s Contribution to the Economic Theory of the 18th Century: Commercial Society, Civil Society and Governance of the Economy
'Count Pietro Verri (1728-97) - Schumpeter writes (History, p. 178) - - would have to be included in any list of the greatest economists'. Within the Milanese school, he certainly stands out, alongside with Cesare Beccaria, during one of the most interesting periods from a history of analysis point of view. Luigi Cossa's famous introduction to the study of political economy rates Pietro Verri to be inferior to Beccaria in ingenuity and scientific cultivation, but greatly to be ahead of him as an economist.1 This judgement by Cossa, in particular, seems to echo the relative position of the two men in the history of ideas, particularly after Beccaria's rise to fame with a book - On crimes and punishments - which had in fact been largely inspired by Verri himself and defended by him.2 It is proposed in the present paper to revisit some of the basic tenets of Pietro Verri's political economy, with more in view than dwell on specific intuitions and theorems: namely relate those to Verri's own - quite original - conception of the economy. The scholarly work of Pietro Verri - with a special reference to his Meditazioni sulla economia politica of 1771 - provides the first systematic contribution stemming from the quarters of Lombard enlightenment in the field of political economy, especially so if one considers that Cesare Beccaria's parallel work - namely his Elementi di economia pubblica, conceived and drafted at the same time as Verri's Meditazioni - would only be published posthumously several years later. From the vantage point afforded by Verri's political economy, we gain a considerably attractive view of the most significant elements and characteristic concepts of Lombard enlightenment during the latter half of the 18th century; Verri, moreover, as we shall see, builds on a number of them in a new and original way. This paper is aimed at discussing Verri's political economy mainly along two distinct, but related, lines. In the first place the conception of commercial society is considered such as it is treated by the author particularly in his Meditazioni. In this perspective the analysis of such issues as competition and the market or money and taxation occupy a central place. Secondly it will be necessary to emphasise that Verri's approach has little to do either with forms of pure economics on one side - largely yet to be born throughout the 18th century - or, on the other side, with such conceptions of the polis - contrariwise well alive among his own contemporaries - as are founded on a sovereign authority conceived to be situated above the law. What Verri's political economy ultimately amounts to is an economic conception of civil society. The latter has natural strong connections with his own fact-mindedness - emphasised by Schumpeter - as well as with his deep practical involvement in administrative affairs and in the reforming process taking place during the latter half of the 18th century in Milan. In our view, a thorough investigation along the mentioned lines is the precondition for an understanding of the intellectual stature and of the scholarly contribution of Pietro Verri. His main ground is distinctly analytical and only by appreciating his analysis is it possible to shed light on the meaning and intellectual significance also of his practical contributions. Moreover Verri's pronouncements on the criticism of despotic government, the relevance of intermediate powers or bodies and on multiple levels of governance will be examined in a new and original light, showing how close they are to the gist of his analysis.

Allograft inflammatory factor-1 (AIF-1) in the common sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus: molecular and expression analysis
Allograft Inflammatory Factor1 (AIF1), alias ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA1), is a highly conserved Ca2+-binding cytokine that has been identified as a key regulator of the immune response in vertebrates. AIF1 is highly expressed in activated macrophages during inflammatory responses, thus representing an accurate indicator of macrophage activation in the body and a pathogenic factor in several inflammatory diseases. Proteins of the AIF1 superfamily are also present in invertebrates, from sponges to echinoderms.
Here, we describe the Paracentrotus lividus Aif-1, which encodes a predicted protein of 151 amino acids with high similarity to vertebrate AIF1. In the common sea urchin, molecular and immunocytochemical analyses showed the constitutive expression of Aif-1 in the coelomocytes. Aif-1 localizes in the perinuclear area of amoebocytes and inside the granules of red cells, but it is not present in vibratile cells and colorless spherula cells. Moreover, significant increase of P. lividus Aif-1 expression, at both mRNA and protein level, are observed in coelomocytes after Gram+ bacterial challenge.
BLAST searches across Echinoderm databases resulted in identification of orthologous proteins from 24 species (8 sea urchins, 1 brittle star, 12 starfishes and 3 sea cucumbers). Among these, P. lividus Aif-1 shared a high identity with several species, e.g., 85.4% with the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, 60.9% with the brittle star Ophiocoma echinata, 59.6% with the starfish Achantaster planci, and 52.3% with the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus.
Our study on P. lividus Aif-1 will contribute to elucidate AIF1 function along the evolutionary scale and to consolidate the key evolutionary position of echinoderms throughout metazoans with respect to the common immune paths

Oral self-mutilation in a patient with rhombencephalosynapsys
Rhombencephalosynapsis (RS) is a rare cerebellar malformation. Its essential features are the absence of the incisura cerebelli posterior, fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres, the absence of the velum medullare anterius and nuclei fastigii, and fusion of the dentate nuclei, which are shifted towards the mid-line. Clinically, affected patients present with signs of cerebellar and motor disturbances. The present report describes a new patient affected by RS. The subject first presented at the age of 22 years because of a psychiatric symptomatology which was characterized by obsessive oral self-mutilation associated with an intellectual disability. Objective evaluation documented dysmorphic features, while neurological examination showed only a slight truncal ataxia. The subject's IQ was 74 on the Wechsler Scale (verbal IQ = 79, performance IQ = 74). Psychiatric evaluation with DSM-IV criteria documented an obsessive-compulsive personality disorder associated with emotional instability and oral self-mutilation. The typical picture of rhombencephalosynapsis was evident on magnetic resonance imaging. Both chromosomal analysis and routine biochemical investigations were normal. The relationship between oral self-injurious behaviour and cerebellar malformations is discussed with particular regard to the behavioural aspects of cerebellar congenital pathology in affective disorders and in autism
Integrating algorithm visualization video into a first-year algorithm and data structure course
In this paper we describe the results that we have obtained while integrating algorithm visualization (AV) movies (strongly tightened with the other teaching material), within a first-year undergraduate course on algorithms and data structures. Our experimental results seem to support the hypothesis that making these movies available significantly improved students' performances. Moreover, the movies were highly appreciated by the students (both from a comprehensibility point of view and from a usefulness point of view), even though with a low attitude towards the emerging video pod-cast technology. Finally, our results indicate the necessity of integrating the AV movies with audio comment, which seems to be one of the most interesting research question left open by our study. © International Forum of Educational Technology & Society (IFETS)
