    ‘Offensive’ writing: Sex and prostitution in the works by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar

    This article considers some works by the Santhal author Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar in light of the fierce critiques they attracted. Against the accusation of pornographic and offensive writing, I maintain not only that the criticism Shekhar’s works received is unjustified (something that has also been claimed by others), but also that it is symptomatic of a mood with its roots in the West that has spread all over the world. I argue that behind this kind of criticism lies the imposition of identity politics on literary works on one side, and the contemporary concern with political correctness on the other. Further, I also show that despite the progressive agenda such a criticism wants to represent and defend, it ends up producing regressive implications. Shekhar’s case appears thus to be particularly enlightening in showing the limits of identity politics and political correctness in literary criticism

    Larry Susskind is Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research interests focus on the theory and practice of multiparty negotiation and public dispute resolution, the practice of public engagement in local decision-making, global en-vironmental treaty-making, and the resolution of science-intensive policy disputes, particularly those related to climate change adaptation. He is an experienced mediator, having helped to settle more than 50 resource management and development disputes in many parts of the world, mostly through the Consensus Building Institute, which he founded in 1991. Larry is the author or co-author of more than twenty books including, most recently, Environmental Problem-Solving (Anthem), Managing Climate Risks in Coastal Communities: Strategies for Engage-ment, Readiness, and Adaptation (Anthem), the second edition of Environmental Diplomacy (Oxford Press), and Good for You, Great for Me (Public Affairs Press).He is one of the co-founders of the in-ter-university Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, where he now directs the MIT-Harvard Public Negotiations Program, serves as Vice-Chair for Instruction, and co-directs the Negotiation Pedagogy Initiative. This booklet is based on the author’s frequent interactions with Larry over several years at MIT. During his doctoral studies, the author has had multiple opportunities to work with Larry that not only inspired the author’s research but also exposed him to some of Larry’s important scholarly contributions to the planning field.     Role of glycosylation in EGFR ectodomain interactions : a molecular dynamics study

    The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) is a tyrosine kinase protein, overexpressed in several cancers. The extracellular domain of EGFR is heavily glycosylated with sugar moieties of varying compositions. Growth factor (mostly Epidermal Growth Factor or EGF) binding activates EGFR. This occurs by inducing the transition from the autoinhibited tethered conformation to an extended conformation of the monomeric form of EGFR and by stabilizing the flexible pre-formed dimer. Several antibodies inhibit EGFR by targeting the growth factor binding site or the dimeric interfaces. Activated EGFR adopts a back-to-back dimeric conformation after binding of another homologous receptor to its extracellular domain as the dimeric partner. Atomistic MD simulations show that glycosylation of the EGFR extracellular domain play critical roles in the binding of growth factors, monoclonal antibodies and the dimeric partners to the monomeric EGFR extracellular domain. N-glycosylation favors growth factor binding to EGFR by a combinatorial mechanism of hydrogen bonding, non-bonded interactions and several intramolecular contacts. Glycosylation also plays distinct roles in binding of antibodies to spatially separated epitopes of the EGFR extracellular domain and assist in maintaining the dimeric interfaces. In the activation process of EGFR, N-glycosylation reduces the flexibility of the tethered and extended monomeric forms of EGFR extracellular domain. By supporting the glycosylated form of the extended state and weakening the tethering interactions in the tethered state, glycosylation supports the extended conformation and facilitates the tethered-extended transition. Dimerization of the EGFR extracellular domain is regulated by attached N-glycans which decrease the flexibility of the dimeric conformation. The decrease in flexibility results in increases in intramonomeric turn motions and intradimeric twist motions which likely induces the asymmetric arrangements of the transmembrane and subsequently the intracellular kinase domains which triggers the signaling cascade in the cystosol.​Doctor of Philosophy (SBS

    Master of Technology- BiotechnologyStevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a medicinally important plant, which is well known for its non-caloric sweetening properties. Because of its natural properties it is in huge demand but the rate of seed germination is very low and seed propagation does not lead to the production of homogenous populations. There are many limitations with the traditional breeding technique. Thus, biotechnological tools such as genetic engineering and genetic transformation are seen as important alternatives. The present report is focused on the use of silver nanoparticles for the improvement of genetic transformation efficiency of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. Effect of different combinations and concentration of 2,4-D, NAA and BA on shoot organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis was investigated. In MS-1 medium supplemented with 5 μM BA (92%) of explants resulted in shoot organogenesis. MS-1 Medium supplemented with 1 μM 2,4-D (95%) and 1 μM NAA (96%) showed maximum explant differentiating into embryo like structures. The present study is aimed at the development of an efficient method genetic transformation in Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni through Agrobacterium tumefaciens and particles. In Agrobacterium tumefacien mediated genetic transformation explants pre-cultured (2 days) before bacterial infection (O.D600 – 0.6) showed maximum transient GUS expression (80%). The genetic transformation through chitosan stabilized silver nanoparticles coated with pBI121 plasmid was attempted while the effect of pristine silver nanoparticles in the presence of chitosan as a stabilizer was also studied. The explants injured silver NPs and transformed with Agrobacterium tumefacien showed (70%) of transient GUS expression while there was decline in transformation frequency in explants injured with chitosan stabilized silver NPs and transformed with Agrobacterium tumefacien showed (30%). GUS activity and molecular studies confirm stable transformation in regenerated shoots. To optimize the use of nanoparticles in genetic transformation further studies need to be conducted

    Stereo-PIV Measurement of Turbulence Shear Stress in a Stirred Flow Mixer

    The turbulence dissipation rate and turbulence shear stress are estimated inside a cylindrical, stirred flow mixer by carrying out Stereo PIV measurements in twelve vertical and three horizontal planes. The flow domain is vertically oriented, filled with the water. A commercially-available, three-blade impeller, HR-100, is used as the agitator. The impeller is mounted near the tip of a thin, rigid shaft, which is aligned along the central axis of the flow domain. The impeller rotates with the constant angular speed of 150RPM, and the Reynolds number based on the impeller diameter and the blade's tip-velocity is equal to 59400. The turbulence statistics in the vertical measurement planes are reported before (Shekhar C, Nishino K, Yamane Y and Huang J, \u93Stereo-PIV measurement of turbulence characteristics in a flow mixer\u94 Journal of Visualization 15 (2012) pp.293~308), which revealed that the rotation induces a downward, as well as tangential, bulk flow motion, which convects the turbulence generated at the blade-water interface, causing the turbulence level below the impeller to be much higher than the level above it. The present study is the second part of the same project, and reports the turbulence statistics in the horizontal measurement planes. The results show that the turbulence level is high in the area swept by the rotating impeller blades and underneath. However, in the outside region, the turbulence damps down and becomes negligible. The vertical and horizontal measurement results are also combined to estimate the production, convection, viscous diffusion, and turbulence dissipation terms of the turbulence kinetic energy's budget equation, along with the turbulence shear stress, along the lines where the different vertical and horizontal planes intersect

    Modelling oligomerization of p53 family.

    Oligomerization is essential for the biological functions of p53 family members (p53, p63 and p73) in cell-cycle arrest and development, and the oligomerization domain of these proteins is found to be the main tetramerization site. Recent studies have reported that the p53 family members can interact with each other, forming heterotetramers. Moreover, p73tet without the H2-helix is reported to form higher level oligomers in vitro. The main focus for this study is to understand the oligomerization of p53 family members at the oligomerization domain. This work is carried out using computational modelling to analyze the binding energetic conformity with the respective models. This information is then further applied to the models built by MODELLER, to find out how feasible the formation of heterotetramer and higher level oligomers are. Results show that p53tet/p63tet and p53tet/p73tet are more likely to form heterotetramers with heterodimers; whereas p63tet/p73tet is more likely to form heterotetramers with homodimers. p73 without its terminal helix forms hexamers which p53 cannot form due to high electrostatic repulsion.Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science
