Optimal error estimates for an approximation of degenerate parabolic problems
A fully discrete scheme for a class of multidimensional degenerate parabolic equations is proposed. The discretization is given by C**0 piecewise linear finite elements in space and backward differences in time (the smoothing procedure is avoided). Numerical integration is used; hence the proposed method is easy to implement. Optimal error estimates in energy norms are proved for the solutions
Verdi und die Sänger: Von der Ästhetik zur Interpretation
This article approaches the challenge of singing Verdi from a historical as well as a current point of view. Starting with fundamental considerations of opera singing and its conventions during the first half of the 19th century, traditions of singing Verdi and the paradigm of the ‘voce verdiana’ are questioned; furthermore, the new orientation of voice aesthetics and the development of Verdis performance art by means of singing are discussed. Verdi’s ideas, principles and directives, which he expressed in the letters to his interpreters, are the subject of a reflection, and his decisive author’s demands are discussed in the context of performance practice
On the numerical approach to a two-phase Stefan problem with nonlinear flux
This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a multidimensional two-phase Stefan problem, with a non-linear flux condition on the fixed boundary; the enthalpy formulation is used. A numerical approach suggested by the theory of non-linear semigroup of contractions in L1 (Ω) is introduced; some converging algorithms based on the Crandall-Liggett formula and on the non-linear Chernoff formula are studied. The algebraic non-linear equations are solved by a modified Gauss-Seidel method. The results of several numerical tests are exhibited and discussed
The Garden and the Scene of Power
Here, the author is dealing with the dual valence of social and aesthetic representations of a symbolic place, the garden, and of its links with collective memory. She will approach the argument from a variety of perspectives that can be summarized as follows: (a) the social and aesthetic representation of the sacred (paradise) in the hortus conclusus —the “geometrization” of space begins with the stability of the Italic pagus; (b) the labyrinth, the social and aesthetic representation of the garden as exorcism, which opposes the hybris of power; (c) the social and aesthetic representation of power in royal gardens (profane); (d) the social and aesthetic representation of collective memory in cemeteries—these are a specific model of hortus conclusus, entrusted with collective memories; and (e) the new stimulus to collective memory by the restoration of former industrial areas (creation of garden-paradises). Today, these areas are the new horti conclusi of collective memory
