Since 1945, regional integration has been a significant aspect of international reality. The very nature of regional integration processes, their aims, the methods used to implement them and their results are nevertheless subject to vigorous disagreement. This essay studies the rise in power of the South African Republic, particularly since the abolition of the apartheid regime (1991), its impact on the distribution of power in Africa and. its implications for regional integration. The contributions and the limitations of current theories of regional integration and power as well as the neo-realist problématique are examined. Regional integration is structured by the distribution of power in the regional subsystem, a unipolar distribution due to the South African Republic's capacities. Its influence is relatively independent of the intentions and decisions of South African political decision-makers. The regional framework also contributes to integrating South Africa in the region. The main aspects of that process are highlighted. To what extent is the South African Republic « regionalized » ?Depuis 1945, les intégrations régionales constituent un aspect significatif des réalités internationales. Toutefois, la nature même des intégrations régionales, leurs objectifs, les méthodes utilisées pour les mettre en place et leurs résultats font l'objet de vigoureux désaccords. Notre essai se propose d'étudier la montée en puissance de la République d'Afrique du Sud, particulièrement depuis l'abolition du régime d'Apartheid en 1991, son impact sur la distribution de la puissance en Afrique et ses implications pour l'intégration régionale. Nous présentons, tout d'abord, les apports et limites des théories existantes sur l'intégration régionale et la puissance, ainsi que la problématique néoréaliste que nous mettons en œuvre. Nous montrons ensuite comment la distribution de la puissance dans le sous-système régional, une distribution unipolaire marquée par les capacités de la République sud-africaine, structure l'intégration régionale en soulignant que cette influence est relativement indépendante des intentions et décisions des décideurs politiques sud-africains. Toutefois, le cadre régional contribue aussi à intégrer l'Afrique du Sud dans la région : nous mettrons au jour les principaux aspects de ce processus. The study of war has seen significant developments in recent years. Three approaches claim that war tends to disappear. They focus on the multiplication of democracies, on the normative devaluation of armed conflicts and on the imbalance between the prohibitive costs of war and its uncertain gains. The author criticizes the obsolescence theses and suggests amendments meant at reaching a better understanding of war in international politics : understanding the exclusion of certain actors and their desire to transform the status quo, identifying the political and social mechanisms which enable expansionist or cooperative myths to influence foreign policy, and emphasizing the confrontation of different rationalities in international politics.Revival or obsolescence ?
