    Undergraduate nursing students' lived experiences with preceptors during their clinical placement at a psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape

    Magister Curationis - MCurDue to the large student-supervisor ratio, a school of nursing at an university in the Western Cape, developed specific preceptorship training for professional nurses working in e.g. psychiatric hospitals. This aimed at improving the clinical teaching expertise of professional nurses and ensuring positive experiences around placement of student nurses. It was unclear how undergraduate student nurses experienced their interactions with their preceptors while placed in psychiatric units. The study used a descriptive phenomenological design to describe the lived experiences of student nurses with preceptors during their clinical placement at a psychiatric hospital. Undergraduate student nurses who were allocated to a preceptor at a psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape served as the population of the study. Purposive sampling was applied and individual unstructured interviews (n=11) held. This study adopted Collaizi's method of data analysis. Results of this study indicated that the nurse preceptors played a supportive role towards students during placement in psychiatric units. This resulted in meeting the students' objectives and needs in clinical placement. A challenge around a comprehensive learning environment was interpreted as a great need during students' training. Ethical clearance was sought from the Ethics Committee of the University of the Western Cape and ethical principles followed in conducting the study. Trustworthiness was ensured during the research process

    Unlocking Potential: The Transformative Role of Gaming in Rural Higher Learning Institutions of South Africa - A Systematic Exploration

    The aim of this study resonated with the pursuit of achieving enhanced engagement in teaching and learning that informs critical thinking, and knowledge retention among students. Despite the growing trend of technological integration in teaching and learning, however, there exists a lack of empirical evidence and comprehensive studies that investigate the effectiveness of gaming in promoting educational objectives within rural institution of higher learning in South Africa. To investigate this gap, a systematic review method was employed, which provides a comprehensive and logical analysis of existing literature on the significance of gaming in teaching and learning within rural institutions of higher education. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used in the study to enhance the rigor and transparency of the research process, by providing a solid foundation for synthesizing and interpreting existing literature relevant to the study. The systematic review findings revealed that the significance of gamification in teaching and learning in rural higher education lies in its ability to overcome accessibility challenges, provide personalized learning experiences, address motivation and retention issues, and enhance digital literacy. It was recommended that by incorporating gamified approaches, rural higher educational institutions can create a more inclusive, engaging, and effective learning environment for students within the rural institutions of higher learning in South Africa

    Doctoral Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg.This thesis examines the historical patterns and trends in mine labour migration to South Africa between 1920 and 1995. It explores the socio-economic impact on the lives of Swazi migrants and their families and societies. Previous studies on Swazi migrant labour are limited in scope and did not sufficiently focus on the factors that shaped migrancy particularly its relationship with Swazi miners, ex-miners, and their dependents. This thesis, therefore, sets out to fill the gap in the historiography of Swaziland. In writing this thesis the author relied on archival sources from Swaziland National Archives, documents retrieved from migrant offices, Annual Reports, books, and newspaper articles. These documentary sources were critically analysed and complemented with oral interviews with ex-migrants, miners, labour officers, and the dependences of migrants. The thesis was underpinned by the Marxist theoretical model and the social history theory to highlight the voices of the marginalised. The study reveals the different strategies used by recruiting agents to entice Swazi labour, and the trends of mine labour migrancy. It also reveals the competition for unskilled labour and the Swazi migrant’s experiences of working in the South African Rand mines. This thesis has also addressed social issues and how migrancy affected families left behind. It further reveals the impact of Voluntary Deferred Pay (VDP) on Swazi miners and its impact on the ex-miners and their dependents. This study seeks to contribute to the existing body of knowledge of migrant labour studies, focusing on Swaziland in particular and Southern Africa in general. The study promotes international migration as an important phenomenon in socioeconomic factors of sending societies such as Swaziland. It adds to the histories of sub-Saharan Africa, thus adding new perspectives to the growing literature on the migrant labour history of Swaziland. It also fills a gap in the historiography of labour migration as it covers a longitudinal period, colonial to the post-colonial period.
