"The end of national models? Integration courses and citizenship trajectories in Europe"
Several European countries have recently introduced or are planning to introduce citizenship trajectories (voluntary or obligatory inclusion programs for recent immigrants) or citizen integration tests (tests one should pass to be able and acquire permanent residence or state citizenship). Authors like Joppke claim this is an articulation of a more general shift towards the logic of assimilation (and away from a multicultural agenda) in integration policy paradigms of European States. Integration policies would even be converging in such a fashion that it would no longer make sense to think in terms of national models for immigrant integration. One cannot deny the empirical fact of diffusion of civic integration policies throughout Europe. This paper claims there is, however, still sufficient distinctiveness between immigrant integration policies in order to continue and use an analytical framework which distinguishes national models

(see Nat. Hist. II(2): 178. 1774) (Fig. 2). Two leaves and an inflorescence are mounted with a mid-18th century pot, so far only known from this sheet (G. Thijsse, pers. comm. to the first author). Another specimen without provenance is present in the Thunberg herbarium (UPS-THUNB n° 6128).Published as part of Wijnands, Dirk Onno, Heniger, Johannes, Veldkamp, Jan Frederik, Fumeaux, Nicolas & Callmander, Martin W., 2017, The botanical legacy of Martinus Houttuyn (1720 - 1798) in Geneva, pp. 155-198 in Candollea 72 (1) on page 181, DOI: 10.15553/c2017v721a11, http://zenodo.org/record/572188
Palmbaum Texte, Kulturgeschichte #26
My mouth waters to see the authors and subjects contained in this report of the second international Menantes-Konferenz in Wandersleben in June of 2009. In the first of four sections, Reinhard Dithmar, Michael Schilling, and Jan Mohr write on fable tradition; their treatments touch, respectively, on theology, on Steinhöwel, and on Waldis. Four papers follow on fable theory: Andreas Seidler, Katja Barthel, Peter Hasubek, and Gisbert Ter-Nedden. Gellert, Lichtwer, and Lessing all get attention in this section. The third section on European fable touches on Samaniego, Iriarte, and Krasicki and on fables in Hungary and the Netherlands. The final section on fable perspectives addresses Wilhelm Busch, Lessing, and Max Ernst. As the beginning T of C points out, there are introductory comments by Bernd Kramer and Dirk Rose. There are occasional black-and-white illustrations. I look forward to the rainy day when I can sit down with this book!Language note: German1. AuflageHerausgegeben von Dirk Ros

Repeller or Attractor? Selecting the Dynamical Model for the Onset of Turbulence in Pipe Flow
The collapse of turbulence, observable in shear flows at low Reynolds numbers, raises the question if turbulence is generically of a transient nature or becomes sustained at some critical point. Recent data have led to conflicting views with the majority of studies supporting the model of turbulence turning into an attracting state. Here we present lifetime measurements of turbulence in pipe flow spanning 8 orders of magnitude in time, drastically extending all previous investigations. We show that no critical point exists in this regime and that in contrast to the prevailing view the turbulent state remains transient. To our knowledge this is the first observation of superexponential transients in turbulence, confirming a conjecture derived from low-dimensional systems.Process and EnergyMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

This is a valuable reprint of one of the many books celebrating Aesop having fun. The frontispiece identifies Hunold as Menantes. The illustrations are only adequate. According to Bodemann, they are based upon Solis and Salomon. It is great to have them in the collection, even in a reproduction. Those leanings upon earlier great fable illustration conceptions are clear in the second fable: Fox and Goat. The illustration is excellent but also derivative. The French and German are presented in two columns on each page. There is a typical problem with the lion's face on 19 and again on 23. For each fable there is about a one-third page illustration above the two columns with their respective titles for the fables. Further French fables are inserted in open space or open pages after the two-column fables. The last of the fables -- XCV -- has an excellent illustration of the fox and wolf. It is followed, as Bodemann notes, by seven French fables without German translation or illustration. 276 pages. About 5 x 7.This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: Bilingual: French/GermanChristian Friedrich Hunold, Nach der letzten Frantzösischen Ausfertigung Seiner Fabeln Ins Teutsche übersetzt Von Menante
Scapular kinematics in professional wheelchair tennis players
Background: Participating in wheelchair tennis increases the demands placed on the shoulder and could increase the risk of developing shoulder pain and injury that might be associated with differences in scapular kinematics. The aim of the study was to examine the presence of shoulder pain and scapular kinematics in professional wheelchair tennis players.Method: Scapular kinematics were obtained in 11 professional wheelchair tennis players, 16 people with shoulder impingement and 16 people without shoulder impingement during humeral elevation and lowering. Clinical examination of the wheelchair tennis players was undertaken using the Wheelchair Users Shoulder Disability Index (WUSPI) and clinical signs of shoulder impingement.Findings: The WUSPI questionnaire (mean = 28 SD 13.8) demonstrated wheelchair tennis participants experienced little shoulder pain and clinical examination revealed negative impingement tests. Wheelchair tennis players had greater scapular posterior tilt during humeral elevation (3.9° SE 1.71; P = 0.048) and lowering (4.3° SE 1.8; P = 0.04) on the dominant compared to non-dominant side. The dominant scapulae of wheelchair tennis players were significantly (P = 0.014) more upwardly rotated (21° SD 6.7) than the scapulae of people with shoulder impingement (14.1° SD 7.0) during scapular plane humeral elevation.Interpretation: This first study of scapular kinematics in professional wheelchair tennis athletes demonstrated bilateral asymmetries and differences to able-bodied participants with shoulder impingement. Understanding the role of sport participation on shoulder function in wheelchair users would assist in the development of preventative and treatment exercise programmes for wheelchair users at risk of shoulder injury and pain
