The Abject Object
A group exhibition curated by Geraint Evans that explores contemporary painterly representations of objects with reference to the still life tradition and with a particular interest in the notion of thingness and abjection.
The starting point is Norman Bryson’s description of still life as “…an object world that has dispensed with human attention and in a sense makes human attention and the human subject obsolete.” The exhibition is concerned with the ways in which paint’s materiality resonates with meaning and articulates the relationship between subject and object, the observer and the observed.

G L Brierley, Simon Callery, Mark Fairnington, Ana Genovés, John Greenwood, Paul Housley, Damien Meade and Donal Moloney.
Panel discussion: was held on Thursday 12 May 4.30-6.30pm in the lecture theatre at Wimbledon College of Arts to discuss and debate the issues raised by the exhibition.

An examination of atmospheric lids during COPS

There is, therefore, an opportunity to contribute significantly to this area of meteorology - this is the goal of this work. The context for this paper is the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS). The COPS observational campaign, which was undertaken in 2007, was based around the Black Forest region with the aim of improving precipitation forecasts in low
mountainous regions. However, the project also represents a great data archive with which to analyse isolated features, such
as atmospheric lids. In short, lids play a vital role in the development of convective storms. For example, evidence from the
Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP), which was run in the UK in 2005, has shown that lids are important not only in
determining whether a storm occurs but also when and where they develop and how intense they are – sometimes, counterintuitively,
they appear to increase the intensity. This extended abstract is intended as a brief overview of the previous literature on lids in order to place the work presented at ICAM-2009 in the wider scientific context.This work is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
Lidar and Radar Measurements of the melting layer in the frame of the Convective and Orographically-inducedPrecipitation Study
During the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS), lidar dark bands were observed
by the Univ. of BASILicata Raman lidar system (BASIL) on several IOPs and SOPs (among others, 23 July, 15 August, 17
August). Dark band signatures appear in the lidar measurements of particle backscattering at 355, 532 and 1064 nm and
particle extinction at 355 and 532 nm, as well as in particle depolarization measurements. Lidar data are supported by
measurements from the University of Hamburg cloud radar MIRA 36 (36 GHz), the University of Hamburg dual-polarization
micro rain radars (24.1 GHz) and the University of Manchester Radio UHF clear air wind profiler (1.29 GHz). Results from
BASIL and the radars are illustrated and discussed to support in the comprehension of the microphysical and scattering
processes responsible for the appearance of the lidar dark band and radar bright band
Seabed foraging by Antarctic krill: Implications for stock assessment, bentho-pelagic coupling, and the vertical transfer of iron
A compilation of more than 30 studies shows that adult Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) may frequent benthic habitats year-round, in shelf as well as oceanic waters and throughout their circumpolar range. Net and acoustic data from the Scotia Sea show that in summer 2-20% of the population reside at depths between 200 and 2000 m, and that large aggregations can form above the seabed. Local differences in the vertical distribution of krill indicate that reduced feeding success in surface waters, either due to predator encounter or food shortage, might initiate such deep migrations and results in benthic feeding. Fatty acid and microscopic analyses of stomach content confirm two different foraging habitats for Antarctic krill: the upper ocean, where fresh phytoplankton is the main food source, and deeper water or the seabed, where detritus and copepods are consumed. Krill caught in upper waters retain signals of benthic feeding, suggesting frequent and dynamic exchange between surface and seabed. Krill contained up to 260 nmol iron per stomach when returning from seabed feeding. About 5% of this iron is labile, i.e., potentially available to phytoplankton. Due to their large biomass, frequent benthic feeding, and acidic digestion of particulate iron, krill might facilitate an input of new iron to Southern Ocean surface waters. Deep migrations and foraging at the seabed are significant parts of krill ecology, and the vertical fluxes involved in this behavior are important for the coupling of benthic and pelagic food webs and their elemental repositories
Measuring governance, corruption, and State capture - how firms and bureaucrats shape the business environment in transition economies
As a symptom of fundamental institutional weaknesses, corruption needs to be viewed within a broader governance framework. It thrives where the state is unable to reign over its bureaucracy, to protect property and contractual rights, or to provide institutions that support the rule off law. Furthermore, governance failures at the national level cannot be isolated from the interface between the corporate and state sectors, in particular from the heretofore under-emphasized influence that firms may exert on the state. Under certain conditions, corporate strategies may exacerbate mis-governance at the national level. An in-depth empirical assessment of the links between corporate behavior and national governance can thus provide particular insights. The 1999 Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) - the transition economies component of the ongoing World Business Environment Survey - assesses in detail the various dimensions of governance from the perspective of about 3,000 firms in 20 countries. After introducing the survey framework and measurement approach, the authors present the survey results, focusing on governance, corruption, and state capture. By unbundling governance into its many dimensions, BEEPS permits an in-depth empirical assessment. The authors pay special attention to certain forms of grand corruption, notably state capture by parts of the corporate sector - that is, the propensity of firms to shape the underlying rules of the game by"purchasing"decrees, legislation, and influence at the central bank, which is found to be prevalent in a number of transition economies. The survey also measures other dimensions of grand corruption, including those associated with public procurement, and quantifies the more traditional ("prettier") forms of corruption. Cross-country surveys may suffer from bias if firms tend to systematically over- or underestimate the extent of problems within their country.
