Sperm length and testes size are sensitive to temperature at specific stages of larval development.
Temperature stress during gonadal development and/or spermatogenesis can negatively impact sperm form and function and ultimately male fertility. Recent studies across taxa have shown that sperm length is particularly sensitive to thermal stress during development and further affecting the outcome of post-copulatory sexual selection. Here we adopted a temperature-switch protocol to identify when during development, temperature affects the expression of sperm length and testes size in the bruchid beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. Egg-to-adult development took place at three temperatures: 17, 27 or 33°C for either full duration of larval development or were switched to higher or lower temperatures during development. Consistent with previous work, 100% larval development at 27°C resulted in significantly longer sperm than when development took place at 17 or 33°C. We found switch-specific phenotypic expression of sperm and testes across all four experimental temperature-switches. Through the demonstration of an interaction between developmental stage and temperature on sperm form, we argue that the negative effects of transient hot events on male fertility might be mitigated to an extent by the fact that when hot events occur, populations will be comprised of individuals at different ontogenetic stages. Those able to avoid the worst effects of heat stress on fertility, through serendipitously being at less sensitive stages of development, will potentially be able to at least partially compensate for the loss of fertility experienced those at more sensitive stages of development

Population health status and economic growth in Chinese provinces: Some policy implications
Using recent cross-sectional, public use, data set on 31 Chinese provinces, we empirically model the core determinants of life expectancy (population health status) using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method, instrumental variables estimation and the relatively more efficient Hubert robust estimator. The empirical regression model results and diagnostic tests indicate that the core determinants of life expectancy are the real GDP per capita, illiteracy rates and daily visits to physicians. Using results of the robust regression estimator (mimic the instrumental variables model estimation), the statistically significant elasticities of life expectancy are 0.033 (t-ratio = 2.45) with respect to per capita real GDP, 0.41 (t-ratio = 2.54) with respect to daily visits to the physicians and is -0.026 (t-ratio = -2.26) with respect to the illiteracy rate. That is, income and daily visits to physicians are positively linked to life expectancy while the illiteracy rate stifles life expectancy production. Our findings are consistent with received theories. Policy implications are explored. © 2013 © Taylor & Francis
Determinants of U.S. health expenditure: Evidence from autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration
Using 1960–2012 annual time-series data for modelling, we apply the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Cointegration (ARDL) approach, to identify some major drivers of per capita real U.S. health spending. The ARDL Bounds testing procedure (Pesaran et al., 1999; 2001) has several econometric advantages compared with the standard Johansen and Juselius cointegration method. One distinguishing feature of this ARDL Bounds testing procedure is its ability to estimate the long-run economic relationship without requiring pre-testing the time-series for the presence of unit roots in the data generating process incorporated in the cointegration model. The empirical findings in this study indicate that per capita real income (INCOME), the population percent above 65 years (AGE) and the level of health care technology (HRD), measured as the level of Research & Development expenditure in health care are cointegrated. INCOME, AGE and HRD exert positive effects on U.S. health expenditure per capita. Unlike prior studies, this paper presents new empirical evidence indicating that the U.S. health care is a necessity, with an income elasticity estimate of around 0.92. We also find that medical technology advances play a major role in the long run rise of the U.S. health expenditure. We discuss implications of these findings
