Control of auxiliary power unit for hybrid electric vehicles
Auxiliary power units (APUs) are widely used for electric power generation in modern hybrid electric vehicles. In the consideration of the APU, a common shaft connects an internal combustion engine and an electrical induction motor which is used as a starting motor and as a battery charger. Dynamic models of both engine and motor are used for the design of the APU controller. A field oriented control scheme and a decoupling controller with two independent current control loops is used for the motor. A torque controller, based on a sliding mode torque estimator, regulates the engine transients. The control of the whole APU is obtained by coupling the engine and motor controllers through a reference governor of the requested power. Numerical experiments on a realistic case study show good performance both in steady state and during transients. © 2007 IEEE
State of charge Kalman filter estimator for automotive batteries
A state of charge estimator for rechargeable batteries that operate under variable and repetitive charging and discharging conditions is proposed. The estimator is based on a state-space dynamic model of the battery which is obtained by modelling the kinetic of reactions and the diffusion phenomena. By using the terminal current and voltage measurements, an extended Kalman filter estimates the concentrations of the main chemical species which are averaged on the thickness of the active material in order to obtain the state of charge of the battery. The estimator is tested on experimental data derived from typical operating conditions of Nickel–Metal Hydride batteries used in automotive hybrid vehicles
Data modeling for batch processes data with application to winemaking
An object oriented model for batch production processes data, designed with the Unified Modeling Language approach, is proposed. The model can be used to handle production data and their flow by allowing the traceability of the entire product history, thus enabling analysis of non explicit causes-effects relations between raw materials properties and final products features. A case study concerning the winemaking production process showing the usefulness of the model when integrated in a SCADA system is presented

Interlaced Extended Kalman Filter as Deterministic Nonlinear Observer
In this paper a Kalman filter based observer for a class of deterministic discrete-time nonlinear systems is proposed. Exploiting the system structure, we propose an observer consisting of interlaced Kalman filters and we establish sufficient conditions that guarantee the local convergence of the observer. Numerical simulations illustrate the good trade-off provided by the algorithm between the reduction of the computational load and the estimation accuracy
