The material and symbolic presence of Cyril and Methodius’s work in the Bulgarian monumental landscape: affirming and removing the past

    No full text
This chapter deals with the material presence of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the everyday life of Bulgarians. It will be maintained that the two Slavic apostles represent one of the most important pillars of Bulgarian national identity and that, by virtue of their work in creating the Slavonic alphabet (the Glagolitic script from which Cyrillic was later derived), they occupy a prominent role in the materiality of the country’s cultural space. This is evident both in their visible representation through statues and other monuments, and in their commercialization through consumer goods and gadgets for locals and tourists. Cyril and Methodius are the most revered saints in the Bulgarian Church, and their national holiday on May 24, established in the early nineteenth century, has been uninterruptedly celebrated to this day. Nevertheless, as I will argue, the ubiquitous presence of Saint Cyril and Methodius and of their work as a way to affirm the prestige of Bulgarian cultural tradition stands in great contrast to the exclusion of the narratives, identities and cultural contribution of the Turkish and Muslim communities in the material culture of the country

Historical and ethnological influences on the traditional civilization of Pomaks of the Greek Thrace

    No full text
The traditional society of the Pomaks is structured on a series of contrasts which characterize their traditional system of values. The problems they face as much in the boundaries of the Muslim minority of Thrace, as well as in the frames of the wider Greek society of the region have defined their cultural expression

Fluid structure interaction modelling on flapping wings

    No full text
Flapping wings display complex flows which can be used to generate large lift forces. Flexibility in wings is widely used by natural flyers to increase the aerodynamic performance. The influence of wing flexibility on the flow can be computed using numerical analysis with Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI). The influence of inertial, elastic and aerodynamic forces is quantified using a 2D wing. A sinusoidal flapping motion is imposed on the leading edge of the vertical wing. The inertial force on the wing dominates for high mass ratios and the wing deflection is rather independent of the flow. For a low mass ratio, the wing deformation scales with the increasing elasticity. The maximum lift and lowest drag were found for the wing with large flexibility and low mass so the passive deformation by aerodynamic forces creates a favourable shape for lift production. Flexible translating and revolving wings at an angle of attack of 45 degrees show that chordwise flexibility decreases both lift and drag, however the lift over drag ratio is increased. The flow around both wings forms a coherent structure with a Root Vortex (RV), Tip Vortex (TV), Leading Edge Vortex (LEV) and Trailing Edge Vortex (TEV). The LEV on the revolving wing is stable for approximately up to half the span because vorticity is transported outward in the vortex core. The flowfield and LEV breakdown are consistent with experimental data of the same wing. The translating wing builds up circulation but the LEV detaches quickly near the centre of the wing. Chordwise bending reduces the angle of attack which decreases the distance to the core of the shed LEVs.Aerodynamic

On the investigation of utility functions on optimal sensor locations

    No full text
Structural Health Monitoring uses data collected from sensors placed on structures to determine their operating condition and whether maintenance is required. Often, optimal sensor placement strategies are used to find the optimal locations for the identification of their modal properties, structural parameters and/or abnormal behaviours under the influence of model and measurement uncertainty. An approach that has been frequently used to solve the problem of sensor placement is the Bayesian experimental design. This approach chooses the locations using the data measured by the sensors to reduce the prior uncertainty of the parameters that are being inferred. The Bayesian experimental design minimizes the uncertainty of the parameters to be inferred through the use of metrics called utility functions. Most of these metrics are based on functions of the posterior distribution. In this paper, the use of three utility functions (Bayesian D-posterior precision, Bayesian A-posterior precision, and Expected Information Gain) is investigated for the problem of sensor placement. The case study chosen consists of a beam with translational and rotational springs connected to the ground subject to an impulsive load. The goal of the analysis is to select the most informative position of a sensor in order to update the distribution of two uncertain physical parameters of the beam based on natural frequencies extracted using the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm. It is shown that for the case investigated, the three utility functions yield the same optimal sensor location.Mechanics and Physics of Structure

The results of the research created as part of the project will be presented at the Second Serbian-Greek Conference „Different Identities and Functions of Urban Space: A Comparative Study of the Circumstances in Belgrade and Athens“ which the Institute of Ethnography SASA realizes in cooperation with the Laboratory for Folklore and Social Anthropology, Department of History and Ethnology, Demokritus University of Thrace (Republic of Greece), as the project holder. This four-year project began in June 2019. The project is managed by dr Manolis G. Varvounis, professor at the Demokritus University of Thrace and director of the Laboratory for Folklore and Social Anthropology on the Greek side, and dr Gordana Blagojević, Principal Research Fellow of the Institute of Ethnography SASA on the Serbian side. The aim of this scientific conference is to present and analyze different ways of using urban space from a diachronic perspective, in a comparative study of the two capitals: Athens and Belgrade. Through this conference, we will point out the multilayered identities and functions of urban space, as well as the contemporary challenges that its inhabitants are facing. Urban space will be viewed as a platform in which various types of activities take place: social, business, economic, cultural, religious, sports, recreational, etc. We will address topics related to urban activities that reflect class, cultural, gender, age, ethnic and other diversity. Analyzing the role of the individual and the local community, we will try to look at the wider social network of various factors that influence formation and functioning of public spaces in these cities. The Second Serbian-Greek Conference, 29th – 30th November 2021. Symbolic Functions of the Urban Belgrade Landscape Components – Children’s Perspective

This anthropological paper views the urban landscape of Belgrade as a system of signs, consequently discussing the functional aspects of those urban landscape components, which children attributed the status of symbols. In a methodological sense, the work is based on the results of two field surveys – the first one, conducted in March 2021 in the Primary School “Kneginja Milica” in New Belgrade, and the second one, from November 2022, which increased the representativeness of the sample, raised the age limit of the respondents, and expanded the territorial coverage of the home city of the children who participated in the research – providing collectively a sample of 70 children aged 7–14. The aim of the work is to provide an input to the (so far rare) contributions at the intersection of two subdisciplines – urban anthropology and anthropology of children/childhood, as well as to encourage further research in this areaТема броја - Мобилност, идентитет(и) и различите функције урбаног простора: студије случаја из Београда и Атине (ур.
