Artistic conversation: Louisemarié Combrink in conversation with Jan van der Merwe: Stairways and Ruins
This contribution presents a textual version of an artistic conversation between Louisemarié Combrink and the artist Jan van der Merwe, in which the latter gives an account of his five-phased approach to creative work. This is done with specific reference to his work Speelgrond/Playground of 2023, made for the Stairways and Ruins exhibition.1 The significance of this approach is that Van der Merwe applies this mode of work to his oeuvre as well as to his teaching more generally. This approach comprises of considerations pertaining to (1) conceptualising; (2) processes, (3) materials, (4) techniques, and (5) presentation. As a focused approach to the mindful production of creative outputs, the insights gleaned from this conversation are presented as useful for professional artists, as well as teachers and students of creative disciplines
A conceptual study of spirituality in selected writings of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze
Several authors have noted that one of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze’si aims was to dissolve the mind-body dualism, typical of Cartesianism. However, there has been little research on the spirit-body connection, as it appears in Jaques-Dalcroze’s writings. The purpose of this document analysis is to understand how a hermeneutic phenomenological model for spirituality in music education (Van der Merwe & Habron, 2015) can inform our understanding of spirituality in selected writings by Jaques-Dalcroze. In the adapted model holism, balance, aesthetic experience, and movement in time, space and with energy emerged as core concepts. We conclude with suggestions for how we might teach for spirituality in Dalcroze Eurhythmics contexts, based on the findings
Music education as/for artistic citizenship in the Field Band Foundation
MMus (Musicology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015This study views the Field Band Foundation’s activities through the lens of artistic citizenship. The aim of this study is to create an expanded theoretical framework for music education as/for artistic citizenship by analysing the related literature and data gathered from the Field Band Foundation in the Gauteng area.
In Another Perspective: Music Education as/for Artistic Citizenship Elliott (2012a) gives practitioners three goals to realize if they wish to empower participants to achieve artistic citizenship. These three goals may be summarized as: 1) putting music to work in the community 2) infusing music with an ethic of care and 3) making music as ethical action for social justice. These three goals served as the initial compass during the conception and analysis stages of this study.
This study was designed as an instrumental case study. The eclectic data set is made up of literature, interviews, documents, visual and audio-visual data gathered from March 2013 to July 2014. Atlas.ti7 was used to analyse the data. A preliminary theoretical framework was created from the literature. In this framework each of the three themes, expressed through Elliott’s goals, are expanded to include various categories. This framework was used as a priori codes to better understand artistic citizenship as lived in the Field Band Foundation. During the analysis of the data gathered from the Field Band Foundation the categories identified in the literature was expanded to include sub-categories. After analysing the data, gathered in the Field Band Foundation, an expanded theoretical framework for artistic citizenship was
created. From the view point of artistic citizenship a community music education project, such as the Field Band Foundation, is shown to empower participants to achieve personal and communal transformation.Master
Master

Rabbit Encephalopathy of Prematurity MRI Data
Ex vivo MRI was performed on fixed brains as described. Newborns rabbits were perfused using the active staining technique to introduce the gadolinium-based MRI contrast agent (Magnevist®, Dimeglumine Gadopentetate 0.5 mmol/mL, Bayer Schering Pharma, Berlin, Germany) into the brain parenchyma. After perfusion fixation with 4% PFA in 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) containing 2% (10 mM) gadoteridol, the heads were removed and immersed in PFA 4% for 48h. Finally, the fixed brains, still in the cranium, were placed in PBS containing 1% (5 mM) gadoteridol at 4°C for 2 to 5 days to ensure equilibration of contrast agent, and tissue rehydration. The heads were trimmed and placed in a sample holder, surrounded by proton-free perfluoropolyether solution (Fomblin®, Solvay Solexis) that minimizes susceptibility artefacts at the interface and imaging was done with a Bruker Biospec 9.4 Tesla small animal MR scanner (Bruker Biospin, Ettlingen, Germany; horizontal bore, 20 cm) equipped with actively shielded gradients (600 mT/m) and a 3.5 cm quadrature coil (volume resonator, Rapid Biomedical, Rimpar, Germany). Analysis was done with automated template propagation for the neonatal rabbit brain and subsequent T1 volumetric data and DTI derived fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) were calculated. The volumes of each brain region were analyzed as absolute values and relative values after normalization to the body weight or total brain volume from the same animal. Data from the left and right hemispheres were summed together

City government resilience: Towards a diagnostic instrument
PhD (Development and Management), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2018This study starts with exploring the evolution of thinking regarding organisations as open systems. It provides a perspective on a total systems approach to organisation design and organisation development and identifies high leverage components in systems which enable organisation resilience. It provides a holistic perspective on organisation resilience and sustainable economic growth including the paradigmatic developments, schools of thinking, theoretical principles theories and models for orgainsational resilience. It identifies the anticipation, adaptation and recovery (AAR) framework as starting point within which a diagnostic instrument could be designed and developed. It investigates trends patterns of behaviour and systemic structures that influence resilience, with specific reference to city government, including high leverage areas within the extended AAR meta-framework. Factors and items are components of a diagnostic instrument for gauging and enabling resilience in city government including aspirational descriptors for factors and items in the diagnostic instrument with which to gauge current reality for a city government resilience strategy. The aspirational quality of descriptors provides a perspective on the desired results (vision) for particular aspects and may form the basis for linking factors and items to benchmarks. Capability assessment, capacity-building in cross-cutting competencies, anticipation, adaptation, recovery, sustainable development, green growth and smart cities form the meta-framework of the diagnostic instrument within which items and their descriptors are situated. Triangulation between the literature study, the instrument design, and cross-checking with a purposive sample of users established its validity empirically within a pre-test and post-test framework to develop the final diagnostic instrument for gauging city government resilience.
Doctora
Capitalisation of borrowing costs: an investigation into technical uncertainties in IAS 23
Those who are not experts in the field of accounting will most probably be of the opinion that interest should be expensed and therefore reduce profits. However, for financial periods beginning on or after 1 January 2009, the capitalisation of borrowing costs (interest) incurred on certain qualifying assets became mandatory for companies applying International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Apart from the practical implications of this change, some technical questions remain unanswered by IAS 23 Borrowing Costs, and since it is now mandatory to capitalise borrowing costs, it might be worthwhile to take a deeper look at the requirements of this standard. The study reveals that knowledgeable Financial Accounting academics were quite divided in their opinions regarding the finer technical details of the revised standard, for example the period that constitutes a “substantial period of time” as mentioned in the standard when defining qualifying assets. These differences in opinion might prove that accountants with equal knowledge may interpret the standard differently, which might lead to confusion and inconsistency in external reporting; to at least some degree a possible infringement of the modern plea towards accounting harmonisation. The findings of this research could prompt standard-setters to provide clearer guidance in the revision of future standards on borrowing costs in various different accounting frameworks, or even of other standards with similar uncertainties. In the instances where participants did agree on the correct accounting treatment, the findings in this research could also be used as guidance for what the correct accounting treatment should be for various scenarios. This could be useful, amongst others, to accountants in practice, auditors, textbook and guidance document authors, university lecturers and providers of continuing professional development (CPD) traininghttp://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rsar20/currenthttp://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10291954.2012.11435165DOI:10.1080/10291954.2012.1143516
