The emergence of a new adverbial downtoner: Constructional change and constructionalization of Dutch [ver van X] and [verre van X] ‘far from X’

© 2018 John Benjamins Publishing Company. The English expression far from, denoting spatial or metaphorical distance, has developed into an adverbial downtoner (De Smet, 2012). In this corpus-based study, our first purpose is to analyze to which degree the Dutch counterparts of the English [far from X] construction, that is [ver van X] and [verre van X], have also developed into downtoners. We show that synchronically ver van mostly has a spatial or metaphorical meaning, while verre van is generally used as an adverbial downtoner. As a second objective, we explore the diachronic pathways taken by both constructions and argue that the category change undergone by [verre van X] is part of a true constructionalization process, while [ver van X] has been affected by minor constructional changes only.status: Publishe

Next Generation Steam Cracking Reactor Concept

    No full text
The steam cracking process is an important asset in the hydrocarbon processing industry. The main products are lower olefins and hydrogen, with ethylene being the world's largest volume organic chemical at a worldwide capacity of ~ 120 million tonnes per year. Feed stocks are hydrocarbons such as: ethane, LPG, naphtha's, gas condensates and gas oil. The research goal of this thesis is to search for the intrinsic optimal steam cracking reaction conditions, pushing the olefin yields to the maximum that the fundamental reaction kinetic models allow for. To get to that goal we have: firstly, identified and assessed alternative process concepts published in the literature. Secondly, developed the concepts and software for an equation based modelling tool suitable for optimisation of large scale reaction kinetic models. Thirdly, developed a new reactor concept, d-RMix for homogeneous reactions with distributed feed allocation, product removal and macro-mixing. Fourthly, applied the optimisation tool to the new reactor concept model and an advanced reaction kinetic model for steam cracking, SPYRO(r). For four different feed stocks optimisations of ethylene yield and of ethylene plus propylene yields have been carried out. For the cracking of ethane a linear-concave unconstrained temperature profile with a (free) maximum temperature of ~1260 K proves optimal. For propane and heavier feed stocks an isothermal profile at the upper temperature bound is optimal, with dips at the beginning and the middle of the reaction volume coordinate. For these heavier hydrocarbon feeds a distribution along the reactor volume coordinate does result in higher yields. Having established that the steam cracking chemistry offers a potential for significantly higher olefins yields, these equipment engineering considerations pose a significant challenge to actually realise this potential and arrive at a next generation steam cracking reactor.Chemical EngineeringApplied Science

Analytic and geometric properties of dislo- cation singularities

This paper deals with the analysis of the singularities arising from the solutions of the problem, where F is a 3 × 3 matrix-valued Lp-function ($1les p) and μ a 3 × 3 matrix-valued Radon measure concentrated in a closed loop in 3, or in a network of such loops (as, for instance, dislocation clusters as observed in single crystals). In particular, we study the topological nature of such dislocation singularities. It is shown that, the absolutely continuous part of the distributional gradient Du of a vector-valued function u of special bounded variation. Furthermore, u can also be seen as a multi-valued field, that is, can be redefined with values in the three-dimensional flat torus 3 and hence is Sobolev-regular away from the singular loops. We then analyse the graphs of such maps represented as currents in × 3 and show that their boundaries can be written in term of the measure μ. Readapting some well-known results for Cartesian currents, we recover closure and compactness properties of the class of maps with bounded curl concentrated on dislocation networks. In the spirit of previous work, we finally give some examples of variational problems where such results provide existence of solutions

The guest who invited himself : the international free trade union movement during and between the two world wars

In his contribution, Geert Van Goethem highlights both the mindset and the practice of the international free trade union movement during and between the two world wars. He examines the essential characteristics of international trade unionism, and also the relationship between the national and international level. Van Goethem also states that labour historians pay too little attention to the immaterial side of this internationalism. Just as historians take too little account of the role of the international workers' movement in the development of a transnational civil society

In autumn 1940, the secretary-generals of Belgium agreed in principle to the collaboration of the country's authorities in the anti-Jewish measures organised by the Nazis. As a result, the Antwerp police participated in a massive roundup of Jews in August and September 1942, obeying the formal orders of their own chief superintendent, De Potter. The first roundup of 15-16th August is analysed in this text. Apparently, some officers were extremely indolent while others showed great zeal. The analysis of the assistant police commissioner's report from the 6th district reveals that few facts are noted in the report. It would seem that he wanted to deny all responsibility, nothing more. On the other hand, a number of officers also wrote reports during these roundups. Overall, these documents show that this was an event of unprecedented violence. It is therefore clear that the burgomaster, Delwaide, and the Crown prosecutor, Baers, had indeed been informed of what had happened on the night of 15th to 16th August.De Belgische secretarissen-generaal stemden in het najaar van 1940 principieel in met de medewerking van de Belgische overheden aan de discriminatoire anti-Joodse nazi-regelgeving. Variational evolution of dislocations in single crystals

    No full text
In this paper, we provide an existence result for the energetic evolution of a set of dislocation lines in a three-dimensional single crystal. The variational problem consists of a polyconvex stored elastic energy plus a dislocation energy and some higher-order terms. The dislocations are modeled by means of integral one-currents. Moreover, we discuss a novel dissipation structure for such currents, namely the flat distance, that will serve to drive the evolution of the dislocation clusters

Creativity in translation: a case study in Dutch compounding

    No full text
peer reviewedDutch has a stronger tendency towards compounding than French (Van Goethem 2009). Nevertheless, little attention has been paid so far to the impact of such cross-linguistic differences on the use of compounds in the L2 and in translation, even though word-formation awareness has been proven crucial for learners’ L2 proficiency and creativity (Balteiro 2011), and constitutes an important factor in producing target-like translations (Lefer 2012). In this contribution we analyze the use of Dutch compounds by French-speaking L2 learners of Dutch and French-Dutch novice translators (whose L1 is Dutch) to gain insight into their creativity in word-formation. The learner data for this study consist of the Dutch subcorpus of MulTINCo (Meunier et al. 2020) already collected from 195 learners in French-speaking Belgium (17 years on average). The translation data will be newly collected in 2023-2024 and will include French-to-Dutch student translations from bachelor students (18-20 years) at Dutch-speaking universities in Belgium. To increase the comparability of the learner and the translator data, the students will be asked to translate the native French texts from MulTINCo into Dutch. Results of a previous study (Authors forthc.) indicate that French-speaking learners of Dutch overuse phrasal structures in contexts where a compound should be used (e.g. lessen van zwembad ‘classes from swimming pool’ instead of zwemlessen ‘swimming classes’), as expected based on the cross-linguistic differences between French and Dutch. However, the corpus results also show that learners produce different types of creative compounds, such as compounds in cases where a simplex word is appropriate (e.g. kookman ‘cookman’ instead of kok ‘chef’) or codeswitching within compounds (e.g. verjaardagsgateau ‘birthday cake’). Since novice translators translate into their L1, they are expected to show even more creativity in their use of compounds, while avoiding inaccurate constructions
