Mien (Van Ban) audio word list
<p>On February 6, 2014, I interviewed an "I Mien" (i⁵⁵mien⁵¹) man called Đặng Văn Tuấn of Thôn 5, Khe Phàn, xã Sân Thủy in Van Ban District, Lao Cai Province, Vietnam. A young girl about 6 years old or so was writing down a word list of Mien in Vietnamese orthography while I was doing a vocabulary elicitation session with the man, which I also photographed</p>
<p>This Mien dialect is similar to the Kim Mien dialect recorded by Jerold Edmondson in that Proto-Mien voiceless laterals and voiceless nasals have changed to h-.</p>

Rice and the Austroasiatic and Hmong-Mien homelands
The locations of the Austroasiatic and Hmong-Mien homelands have been tied to the origins of Asian rice cultivation. The lexical evidence supports the view that ancient Austroasiatics and ancient Hmong-Mien were the first rice cultivators. Historical linguistic insights shed light on the possible geographical location of the two respective homelands. Controversy regarding the origins of rice cultivation that has been waged since 1883 has, by and large, been resolved, though the story is complex. The palaeobotanical evidence is valuated in light of molecular genetic findings on Asian rice. The overall picture is enhanced by insights from the genetics of Asian human populations, including modern Austroasiatic and Hmong-Mien language communities

Rolling element bearing fault diagnosis based on non-local means de-noising and empirical mode decomposition
The presence of faults in the bearings of rotating machinery is usually observed with impulses in the vibration signals. However, the vibration signals are generally non-stationary and usually contaminated by noise because of the compounded background noise present in the measuring device and the effect of interference from other machine elements. Therefore in order to enhance monitoring condition, the vibration signal needs to be properly de-noised before analysis. In this study, a novel fault diagnosis method for rolling element bearings is proposed based on a hybrid technique of non-local means (NLM) de-noising and empirical mode decomposition (EMD). An NLM which removes the noise with minimal signal distortion is first employed to eliminate or at least reduce the background noise present in the measuring device. This de-noised signal is then decomposed into a finite number of stationary intrinsic mode functions (IMF) to extract the impulsive fault features from the effect of interferences from other machine elements. Finally, envelope analyses are performed for IMFs to allow for easier detection of such characteristic fault frequencies. The results of simulated and real bearing vibration signal analyses show that the hybrid feature extraction technique of NLM de-noising, EMD and envelope analyses successfully extract impulsive features from noise signals

High Impact Learning that Lasts
Within competitive business markets, involving our employees in learning and development (L&D) activities is increasingly necessary for various reasons. In addition, L&D opportunities play a role in why applicants choose one job over another and are clearly an important reason for long-term retention within the same organisation. Benefits of employee-led learning in terms of teamwork, knowledge-sharing, and longer term employee satisfaction are significant. L&D should be an on-going process that strengthens long-term sustainable business growth. Allowing flexibility in learning and being open to informal learning in the daily training and work situation can be very effective and necessary to further develop professional expertise. Adaptive fuzzy quasi-continuous high-order sliding mode controller for output feedback tracking control of robot manipulators
This article develops a new output feedback tracking control scheme for uncertain robot manipulators with only position measurements. Unlike the conventional sliding mode controller, a quasi-continuous second-order sliding mode controller (QC2C) is first designed. Although the QC2C produces continuous control and less chattering than conventional sliding mode and other high-order sliding mode controllers, chattering exists when the sliding manifold is defined by the equation Formula . To alleviate the chattering, an adaptive fuzzy QC2C (FQC2C) is designed, in which the fuzzy system is used to adaptively tune the sliding mode controller gain. Furthermore, in order to eliminate chattering and achieve higher tracking accuracy, quasi-continuous third-order sliding mode controller (QC3C) and fuzzy QC3C (FQC3C) are investigated. These controllers incorporate a super-twisting second-order sliding mode observer for estimating the joint velocities, and a robust exact differentiator to estimate the sliding manifold derivative; therefore, the velocity measurement is not required. Finally, computer simulation results for a PUMA560 industrial robot are also shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strateg
