    Jersey Homesteads (later renamed the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whome had emigrated from Europe. In this letter, Boris Drasin, a community leader who was the President of the Jersey Homesteads Industrial Cooperative Association, expresses his concerns to their management corporation (Consumers Wholesale Clothiers, Inc.) about how financial losses will impact the lives of Roosevelt's residents, three-fourths of whom depended on the garment factory for their livelihoods. He makes suggestions as to how the situation might be improved

    Eulerian Method for Multiphase Interactions of Soft Solid Bodies in Fluids

    We introduce an Eulerian approach for problems involving one or more soft solids immersed in a fluid, which permits mechanical interactions between all phases. The reference map variable is exploited to simulate finite-deformation constitutive relations in the solid(s) on the same fixed grid as the fluid phase, which greatly simplifies the coupling between phases. Our coupling procedure, a key contribution in the current work, is shown to be computationally faster and more stable than an earlier approach and admits the ability to simulate both fluid–solid and solid–solid interaction between submerged bodies. The interface treatment is demonstrated with multiple examples involving a weakly compressible Navier–Stokes fluid interacting with a neo-Hookean solid, and we verify the method's convergence. The solid contact method, which exploits distance-measures already existing on the grid, is demonstrated with two examples. A new, general routine for cross-interface extrapolation is introduced and used as part of the new interfacial treatment.Massachusetts Institute of Technology.     Making Enterprise Information Systems Resilient Against Disruptive Events: A Conceptual View

    Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) are designed to deal with normal variability in their inputs and data. Empowered by CONTEXT-AWARENESS, some EIS even count on sensors and/or data analytics for capturing changes outside of the system. Nevertheless, context-awareness would often fail when EIS are affected by (large-scale) disruptive events, such as disasters, virus outbreaks, or military conflicts. Hence, in the current paper, we take a step forward, by considering context-awareness for disruptive events. We combine context-awareness with risk management techniques, such as FMECA and FTA, that are useful for defining and mitigating risk events. To avoid having to define the likelihood for such very-low-probability disruptive risks, we use CONSEQUENCE-BASED RISK MANAGEMENT rather than traditional risk management. V teoretické části práce je detailně sledován proces vzniku od prvotních idejí až po hlavní koncepční řešení celku. Text zde dále zkoumá formu díla skrze technologický proces výroby až po konečnou realizaci knihy a dalšího příslušenství, které kniha nabízí.     Enforcing context-awareness and privacy-by-design in the specification of information systems

    Networked physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity, allow for run-time acquisition of user data. This in turn can enable information systems which capture the “current” user state and act accordingly. The use of this data would result in context-aware applications that get fueled by user data (and environmental data) to adapt their behavior. Yet the use of data is often restricted by privacy regulations and norms; for example, the location of a person cannot be shared without given consent. In this paper we propose a design approach that allows for weaving context-awareness and privacy-by-design into the specification of information systems. This is to be done since the very early stages of the software development, while the enterprise needs are captured (and understood) and the software features are specified on that basis. In addition to taking into account context-awareness and privacy-sensitivity these two aspects will be balanced, especially if they are conflicting. The presented approach extends the “Software Derived from Business Components” (SDBC) approach. We partially demonstrate our proposed way of modeling, by means of a case example featuring land border security. Our proposed way of modeling would allow developers to smoothly reflect context and privacy features in the application design, supported by methodological guidelines that span over the enterprise modeling and software specification. Those features are captured as technology-independent societal demands and are in the end reflected in technology-specific (software) solutions.     A blurred interface formulation of The Reference Map Technique for Fluid-Solid Interactions and Fluid-Solid-Solid Interactions

    Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2014.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 143-144).In this work we present a blurred interface method for Fluid-Solid Interactions (FSI) and multiple solids immersed in a fluid or FSSI (Fluid-Solid-Solid Interactions) based on the reference map technique as presented by Kamrin and Rycroft. I will follow the chain of thought which lead from the initial sharp interface technique to the newer blurred interface one. We will present its capabilities of doing fully-coupled simulations of a compressible Navier-Stokes fluid and highly non-linear solid undergoing large deformations all performed on a single Eulerian grid with no Lagrangian particles whatsoever. The Reference Map Technique (RMT) provides an Eulerian simulation framework allowing to compute fully coupled fluid/soft-solid interactions. However, due to the extrapolations inherent to the Ghost Fluid Method (GFM) for fluid/fluid interactions, on which the RMT is based, numerical artifacts get created in the resulting pressure and velocity fields whenever the levelset defining the interface crosses a gridpoint from the fixed cartesian grid utilized in this method. We will therefore follow the creation and propagation of these artifacts as well as analyze how the blurred technique solves or avoids these problems.by Boris Ivanov Valkov.S.M
