    No full text
The theoretical framework is outlined through the in-depth analysis of evaluation research in the socio-educational field, addressing the central issues of evaluation - why we evaluate, what we evaluate, how we evaluate, when we evaluate - within a scenario of complexity. The last section of the chapter illustrates the l Fondo per il contrasto della povertà educativa minorile, with a focus on social impact evaluation

Fostering the professional capital of teachers in digital capabilities

    No full text
The article focuses on teacher professionalism, taking into account the challenges related to the growing digitizing of teaching and learning processes and educational environments, especially in light of the great challenges posed by COVID-19 in the educational sector. First, the article proposes an evaluative framework based on the Capability Approach to investigate the complex links between education and technologies, and the impacts on teachers’ collaborative work. Second, the notion of teachers’ professional capital is contextualized in the digital era, and the impact of the diffusion of digital technologies on teachers’ collaborative practices is examined. Then, some policy recommendations are provided, focusing on teachers’ training programs and the implications of adopting the Capability Approach to tackle such issues. The questions arising refer to the types of capital that have to be developed in the teaching profession, which are linked to the diffusion of digital media in the educational sector, and the means for fostering teachers’ capability development

Sono descritte le modifiche apportate al disegno di valutazione complessivo a causa della pandemia COVID-19.Description and discussion of the evaluation system (ex ante, in itinere, ex post): explanation of why it was decided to adopt certain evaluation approaches and strategies (with reference to what was stated in the first part of the volume, of a more theoretical nature): participatory evaluation; learning purpose of the evaluation; theories of change; realistic evaluation; cause-effect relationship (generative causality). Reference methodology, techniques and investigation tools: mixed methods perspective; analysis of community profiles; focus groups; questionnaires; risk analysis; visits to the Villages. The changes made to the overall evaluation design due to the COVID-19 pandemic are described

Online and offline qualitative methods: some methodological considerations on focus groups and Internet opportunities

    No full text
The paper analyses the impact of the use of computer technologies on qualitative research methodology and data analysis (Perrott 2000; Evans, 2006), focusing in particular on online focus groups (Krueger and Casey, 2000; Stewart and Williams, 2005). After a brief historical excursus of the development of this technique in social research, the paper describes and compares the methods of conducting a focus group in “traditional” (face to face) and online environments (Walston and Lissitz, 2000; Mann and Stewart, 2000). In doing so, some methodological issues are considered, like the recruitment of participants, the size and composition of groups, the role and skills of the moderator, the interactivity among participants as well the data recording, their analysis and validity. Taking into account how choices between offline and online setting as well as design decision should be made in relation to the aims and goals of a research study, it is underlined how and under which circumstances the focus group might benefit from computer mediated communication technologies, both in synchronous and asynchronous modalities. These issues are deeply discussed drawing on practical examples of conducting synchronous online focus group concerning evaluation activities of an adult training course, showing various practical benefits both for researchers, both for participants, as well as some potential drawbacks and problems. Finally, the paper summarizes the advantages and limitations associated with online focus group and speculates on the possible evolutions of this method exploring the opportunities offered by the most recent developments of new technologies (like Second Life and various video conferencing applications). Taking into account also the debate around the possible perplexities and the criticisms advanced by some authors (Greenbaum, 2002; Denscombe, 2003), it has to be underlined that, beyond any diatribe, Internet methodologies offer interesting possibilities for conducting qualitative research using online group discussions and confirm themselves as valuable new tools for the social researchers

The Teaching Profession: Trends and Issues in the Italian School System

    No full text
The essay is the introduction of the monographic issue entitled "The Teaching Profession: Trends and Issues in the Italian School System". The monographic issue, in Memory of Professor Luisa Ribolzi, addresses one of the central themes in sociological reflection on schools, the role of the teaching profession and its centrality within educational systems. We question today how the Italian school and its governance system have responded to the challenge introduced by the law on school autonomy and how the issues related to teaching quality, teacher training, and the evaluation of the system, students, and teachers have developed in the Italian and international scientific debate. The contents of the different articles contained in the monographic issue are discussed, focusing on both the theoretical issues and the methodological ones

La scelta della scuola e il peso dei condizionamenti finanziari: alcuni profili di famiglie

    No full text

Work life balance in a capability perspective: an Italian case study on flexible couples

    No full text
The article discusses the practical basis of judgements about social justice, focusing on the quality of work-life balance in contemporary labour markets. After describing the main European and Italian work-life reconciliation policies, the article presents the results of qualitative research on young adult ‘flexible’ couples in Italy. Taking Amartya Sen’s ‘capability approach’ as the starting point, it analyses the ways in which external flexibility affects capabilities concerning the freedom to choose the balance between family, job and overall working life. The article concludes with some reflections on social justice in a resources-capabilities perspective, evaluating the effect of Italian work-life balance policies on the lives of flexible employees and providing some proposals for the effective enhancement of individual capabilities in this regard
