Luminanssimittausten pistepilvirekonstruktio
Point cloud reconstruction refers to 3D measurement methods of an object or a scene. Similarly, luminance measurements describe a method for determining the light intensity coming from an object. In point cloud reconstruction of luminance measurements, both methods are combined to produce 3D luminance point clouds. In general, the third dimension has been neglected in luminance measurements. This dissertation examined the performance of measurement equipment for measuring both the geometry and luminance of an object.
The thesis improved calibration and workflows for evaluating 3D luminance measurement methods. The 3D measurement methods were terrestrial laser scanning, mobile laser scanning and photogrammetry. In order to transfer the luminance values to 3D points, the geometric and luminance calibrations of the cameras were studied in the dissertation, and measurement processes were developed. In addition, case studies demonstrated various applications and workflows related to luminance point cloud reconstruction.
The results showed that luminance measurements can be combined with laser scanning and photogrammetry, which could simultaneously solve the positions and orientations of the cameras and the geometry of the object. In addition, the methods developed in the dissertation made it possible to transfer the dynamic range contained in the 16-bit luminance image to 3D points. The target luminance chosen for static road lighting luminance measurements was 0.01–2.88 cd·m-2 for a single measurement. In road lighting measurements performed with mobile laser scanning, the target luminance range of the digital single lens reflex camera ranged from 0.44 to 27.97cd·m-2, and the range of the panoramic camera system ranged from 0.99 to 8.63 cd·m-2. In static indoor luminance measurements, the dynamic range of the terrestrial laser scanner reached 4.3–443.6 cd·m-2. With the chosen luminance measurement methods, it was possible to solve the positions of the 3D measurement equipment and determine the properties of the 3D points such as position, colour, luminance, intensity and point normal.
The developed luminance measurement methods expand the range of possible applications. 3D luminance measurements enable the evaluation of ergonomics, energy consumption and lighting changes in indoor spaces. Measuring road and street lighting conditions in the outdoor environment enables maintaining safety and driving comfort. 3D luminance measurements performed with mobile laser scanning enable the collection of data also from wide road and street environments.
Sisätilojen staattisissa luminanssimittauksessa maalaserkeilaimen dynaaminen alue saavutti 4,3–443,6 cd·m-2. Valituilla luminanssimittausmenetelmillä pystyttiin ratkaisemaan 3D-mittalaitteiden sijainnit ja määrittämään 3D-pisteiden ominaisuuksia kuten sijainti, väri, luminanssi, intensiteetti ja pisteen normaali.
Kehitetyt luminanssimittausmenetelmät laajentavat mahdollisten sovellusten kirjoa. Sisätiloissa 3D-luminanssimittaukset mahdollistavat ergonomian, energiankulutuksen ja valaistuksen muutosten arvioinnin. Ulkoympäristössä tie- ja katuvalaistusolosuhteiden mittaaminen mahdollistaa turvallisuuden ja ajomukavuuden ylläpitämisen. Mobiililaserkeilauksella suoritetut 3D-luminanssimittaukset mahdollistavat tiedon keräämisen myös laajoista liikenneympäristöistä
Liikkuvan laserkeilauksen soveltuvuus jokiympäristön kartoitukseen ja muutosten havaitsemiseen
The detailed geometry of ground topography is needed for various environmental studies, including river dynamic studies (erosion/deposition), hydraulic modeling, interpreting fluvial geomorphology and habitat modeling. In recent years, mobile laser scanning (MLS) has provided an efficient and versatile method for collecting three-dimensional data for built and natural environments. MLS is a surveying technique that uses a laser beam for distance observations, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for determining the position and an accurate inertial measurement unit (IMU) for measuring the 3D orientation. The MLS system can be flexibility mounted on different vehicles for different purposes. Advances in technology in recent years have introduced lighter sensors, which have also made it possible to develop personal laser scanning (PLS) systems by mounting the sensors on a backpack.
While ground topography mapping using MLS has mainly been discussed in the context of road modeling, the performance and usability of MLS have been lacking in geomorphological surveys and fluvial studies. In particular, a multitemporal MLS data collection yields a remarkable and highly detailed data source for analysing different natural processes. The multitemporal MLS surveys provide possible new applications for e.g. flood risk management, monitoring the health and the quality of city trees, conducting environmental impact assessments, updating the city maps and updating interior models.
In this PhD thesis, the feasibility of MLS for mapping and monitoring a riverine environment was analysed. The MLS data were measured by mounting the sensors on a boat (BoMMS), cart and backpack. The assessment of digital terrain model (DTM) accuracy and the geometric quality of MLS point clouds and performance of BoMMS data for monitoring multitemporal topography and vegetation changes were likewise investigated. Automatic data processing methods were tested and presented for generating terrain and vegetation points from the BoMMS data. Moreover, the study demonstrated the integrated use of MLS and panoramic images for interpreting an MLS-based change detection model.
The results indicate that MLS is an efficient method for improving the spatial and temporal coverage of high-resolution 3D environmental models. In particular, MLS provide a unique measuring perspective for complex environments. While the number of applications can be unlimited, it should be noted that high-performance MLS measurements require good satellite visibility, proper system calibration and reference control measurements. Mittaus-järjestelmä voidaan joustavasti asentaa erilaisiin mittausalustoihin eri tarkoituksia varten.

Single antenna and four-element antenna arrays were characterized, which were attached to a subminiature version A connector via an innovative solderless, 3D-printed ‘plug-and-play-type’ tightener. Furthermore, indoor wireless communication and Internet of Things scenarios with commonly used wall materials including gypsum and plywood boards, on which patch antennas and antenna arrays can be attached, were also presented. In order to validate the concept, design and fabrication iterations in parallel with numerical and experimental investigations were executed. To elaborate, single antenna and antenna array configurations without and with wall materials were characterized to see their functionality at 2.4 GHz resonance frequency and beyond 300 MHz bandwidth, respectively. The results demonstrate that the investigated configurations fulfill short-range radio transmission and can be utilized, e.g., for indoor backscattering-type communications and wireless sensing applications, as an affordable and versatile alternative to their conventional counterparts. Being attached to their corresponding background materials, single-antenna specimens were measured to have return losses beyond 18 dB and peak gains around 1 dBi, while higher peak gains above 6 dBi were detected for antenna arrays. Moreover, the antenna arrays can enable multiple-input and multiple-output communication. The proposed arrays had diversity performance in terms of return losses higher than 15 dB, isolation of more than 20 dB, envelope correlation coefficient 9.95 dB, mean effective gain < − 3 dB, power ratio factor < 0.5 dB, and channel capacity loss < 0.4 bits/s/Hz.Peer reviewe

L-alueen taajuuspyyhkäisevän radiometrin suunnittelu ja toteutus
L-band (1-2 GHz) radiometry has been an ongoing research topic in the Department of Radio Science and Engineering for a number of years. In addition to remote sensing and radioastronomy applications, a radiometer can be used for detecting unwanted radio emissions in a protected frequency band.
A frequency scanning radiometer (FIRaL) for detecting radio interference at the frequency interval of 1920 – 1980 MHz is designed and realised in this Licentiate thesis work. The aforementioned frequency band is reserved for mobile communication applications. The theory of radiometry is presented to the necessary extent in order to facilitate the FIRaL radiometer design. The design of the receiver and local oscillator electronics and pyramidal horn antenna is presented.
Radiometer performance is studied by measuring the relevant device parameters in laboratory conditions. The feasibility of the radiometer to perform real-world interference surveys is tested by on-site measurements. The realised radiometer receiver input noise temperature is 661 ± 58 K or better. The radiometer is deemed suitable for interference measurements. The preliminary on-site measurements suggests that further measurements are feasible in order to study the extent of radio emissions in the 1920 – 1980 MHz mobile communications band.Radiotieteen ja –tekniikan laitoksella on jo useita vuosia tutkittu L-alueen (1-2 GHz) radiometriasovelluksia. Kaukokartoituksen ja radioastronomian ohella radiometreillä voidaan tutkia radiotaajuisia häiriöitä suojatuilla taajuusalueilla.
Tässä työssä on suunniteltu ja toteutettu L-alueen taajuuspyyhkäisevä radiometri (FIRaL) 1920-1980 MHz:in taajuusalueelta mahdollisesti löytyvien radiotaajuisten häiriöiden tutkimiseen. Edellä mainittu taajuuskaista on varattu matkaviestintäsovellusten käyttöön. Radiometria esitellään FIRaL radiometrin suunnittelun taustatiedoksi tarvittavalla laajuudella. Vastaanottimen ja paikallisoskillaattorin elektroniikan ja pyramiditorviantennin suunnittelu esitellään.
Radiometrin suorituskykyä tutkitaan mittaamalla kyseisen laitteen parametrit laboratorio-olosuhteissa. Radiometrin soveltuvuus käytännön häiriömittauksiin testataan tekemällä mittauksia tyypillisessä matkaviestintätukiaseman sijaintipaikassa. Rakennetun radiometrin kohinalämpötila on maksimissaan 661 ± 58 K. Radiometri todetaan käyttökelpoiseksi häiriömittauksiin. Alustavista mittauksista löytyi todennäköisiä häiriölähteitä 1920 – 1980 MHz matkaviestintäkaistalta ja lisätutkimukset häiriöiden laajempaan kartoitukseen ovat perusteltuja
Sudden Death Associated with Incarcerated Small Bowel due to Mesodiverticular Band
Meckel’s diverticulum is a congenital anomaly present in about 3% of the population and usually asymptomatic. Rarely, a mesodiverticular band extends from the tip of a Meckel’s diverticulum to the mesentery, thought to be due to lack of involution of the left vitelline artery. The presence of this band creates a closed loop through which loops of bowel can become entrapped. Rare case reports have described incarceration of bowel, and sudden death in children. We present such a case, and discuss this entity.Peer reviewe
