Antoon De Clerck: Visuele Hygiëne

Laying down colours and covering up layers
The daily life of Aline Verstraten provides a starting point for her paintings, in which her partner often appears. In this way, she explores the relationship between the intimacy of her direct surroundings and the necessary distance she takes as a painter from the subject. In this article, she connects some experiences with and some thoughts about colours and layers with her two most recent paintings
Sneak Peek: Theodoor Rombouts
This Sneak Peek was made for Denderland TV. The video shows a detail from a painting by Theodoor Rombouts, in the exhibtion "Theodoor Rombouts: Virtuoso of Flemish Caravaggism" (MSK Ghent, 21 January - 23 April 2023). The voice-over reflects on the materiality of the painted highlight in the eye of a man
Lost nor Found
For the event #StolenMemory in Hasselt, artists and writers were invited to make an artwork or text inspired by a selection of objects from the Arolsen Archives. These archives contain pictures and other objects from victims of the Nazi regime. One of these objects is a photograph from the collection of Gustav Weisschuh, which is used for this animated video. Together with the voice-over, the animation creates a back-and-forth motion through which the hope of the arrival of the photograph at its destination continually increases and decreases. The video is a loop, which could in theory keep on playing until the rightful owner of the picture is found. In this way, the video becomes a metaphor for all objects in the Arolsen Archives: neither lost, nor found
