Application of Transfer Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks for Autonomous Oil Sheen Monitoring
Oil sheen on the water surface can indicate a source of hydrocarbon in underlying subaquatic sediments. Here, we develop and test the accuracy of an algorithm for automated real-time visual monitoring of the water surface for detecting oil sheen. This detection system is part of an automated oil sheen screening system (OS-SS) that disturbs subaquatic sediments and monitors for the formation of sheen. We first created a new near-surface oil sheen image dataset. We then used this dataset to develop an image-based Oil Sheen Prediction Neural Network (OS-Net), a classification machine learning model based on a convolutional neural network (CNN), to predict the existence of oil sheen on the water surface from images. We explored the effectiveness of different strategies of transfer learning to improve the model accuracy. The performance of OS-Net and the oil detection accuracy reached up to 99% on a test dataset. Because the OS-SS uses video to monitor for sheen, we also created a real-time video-based oil sheen prediction algorithm (VOS-Net) to deploy in the OS-SS to autonomously map the spatial distribution of sheening potential of hydrocarbon-impacted subaquatic sediments
Marian Spirituality of Fulton J. Sheen
The article concerns the Marian aspect of the spirituality of a well known American bishop, author of many publications, and famous preacher, Servant of God Fulton Sheen. The author shows, on the basis of Sheen’s most important publications, the bishop’s dogmatic teaching on Mother of God, the main forms of Marian piety put forward by him, and the idea of Her as a role model in the Christian spirituality. The Marian spirituality of Fulton Sheen, as early as in the pre‑conciliar time, realized generally ten aspects of devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which later Pope Paul VI indicated in his apostolic exhortation Marialis cultus, in 1974
Artificial Eyes by B. Sheen
Sheen, Barbara. Artificial Eyes. Norwood House Press, 2017.Artificial Eyes is one of a series of non-fiction books called Tech Bytes, that “explores...new technologies and how they are changing the way people perform everyday tasks.” Barbara Sheen, author of almost 100 children’s books, explores the history of artificial eyes, how they are made, their effect on people’s lives, and future developments. This is a detailed work that is designed to be a reference or text book for Grades 4 – 6. It is an odd combination of factual presentation and anecdotal stories about individuals. For example, “When Teddy was two years old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his eye. To rid him of the disease, his eye was surgically removed.” Squeamish children may find some content disturbing. To balance the dense text, most pages have a photograph, diagram, or side-bar containing interesting information. There are also “Did you know?” boxes, which allow for some level of interaction. For example, “Did you know? Bionic eyes only provide black-and-white vision. Experts are working on software that would let wearers see colors.” The end of each chapter also has text-based questions and potential research projects. In this way it is more like a text book, but it is unlikely that a classroom would need textbooks on a subject this specific. While the short sentence and paragraph structures are appropriate for the upper elementary reading level, many of the words and word-combinations will be difficult for students in these grades. They may require help in understanding the content. There are few children’s books about artificial eyes, so this would be a good addition to public libraries and both elementary and junior high school libraries. Induction of C-Met Proto-Oncogene by Epstein-Barr Virus Latent Membrane Protein-1 and the Correlation with Cervical Lymph Node Metastasis of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is distinctive in head and neck carcinomas for its close association with Epstein-Barr virus and Its highly metastatic nature. Up-regulation of cell motility Is essential for enhancement of metastatic potential. The expression of c-Met proto- oncogene, a high- affinity receptor for hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor, has been reported to correlate with metastatic ability of the tumor cell We observed close association of c -Met expression with cervical lymph node metastasis (P = 0. 0272) In 39 NPC specimens studied immunohistochemically, Epstein-Barr virus-encoding latent membrane protein -1 (LMP-1 ) is a primary oncogene and is suggested to enhance the metastatic property of NPC, Previously, we reported that LMP -1 enhanced the motility of Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells that was mediated by activation of Ets-1 transcription factor. Therefore, we examined the interrelationships of LMP-1, Ets-1, and c-Met. In immunohistochemical studies, the expression of LMP-1, Ets-1, and c-Met correlated significantly with each other in NPC ( LMP-1 versus Ets-1, P < 0.0001; Ets-1 versus c-Met, P = 0. 0012; LMP-1 versus Met, P 0.0005). Transfection of LMP-1- expressing plasmid in MDCK cells induced c-Met protein expression, The c-Met protein was also induced by Ets-1 expression , and induction of c-Met by LMP-1 was suppressed by introducing a dominant -negative form of Ets-1 in LMP-1- expressing MDCK cells. These results suggest that LMP-1 induces c-Met through the activation of Ets-1, which may contribute in part to the highly metastatic potential of NPC

Eddy-Induced Modulation of Turbulent Dissipation over Rough Topography in the Southern Ocean
Mesoscale eddies are universal features of the ocean circulation, yet the processes by which their energy is dissipated remain poorly understood. One hypothesis argues that the interaction of strong geostrophic flows with rough bottom topography effects an energy transfer between eddies and internal waves, with the breaking of these waves causing locally elevated dissipation focused near the sea floor. This study uses hydrographic and velocity data from a 1-yr mooring cluster deployment in the Southern Ocean to test this hypothesis. The moorings were located over a small (~10 km) topographic obstacle to the east of Drake Passage in a region of high eddy kinetic energy, and one was equipped with an ADCP at 2800-m depth from which internal wave shear variance and dissipation rates were calculated. Examination of the ADCP time series revealed a predominance of upward-propagating internal wave energy and a significant correlation (r = 0.45) between shear variance levels and subinertial near-bottom current speeds. Periods of strong near-bottom flow coincided with increased convergence of eddy-induced interfacial form stress in the bottom 1500 m. Predictions of internal wave energy radiation were made from theory using measured near-bottom current speeds, and the mean value of wave radiation (5.3 mW m−2) was sufficient to support the dissipated power calculated from the ADCP. A significant temporal correlation was also observed between radiated and dissipated power. Given the ubiquity of strong eddy flows and rough topography in the Southern Ocean, the transfer from eddy to internal wave energy is likely to be an important term in closing the ocean energy budget
