    Sea Ice Temperature in different depths measured during the Norwegian North Polar Expedition 1893-1896

    This dataset contains the observations of sea ice temperature conducted during the Norwegian North Polar Expedition in 1893-1896 onboard the drifting vessel Fram. Observations were obtained mostly daily during large parts of the expedition, after the method was established by F. Nansen. Temperatures were measured under the lead of S. Scott-Hansen in two or four inch wide boreholes using thermometers mounted to wooden poles, that mostly remained positioned in the ice and were pulled up for measurements. Air exchange in the holes was limited by muffs of reindeer skin wound around the wooden poles. Due to ice deformation and other influences, the thermometers needed to be moved several times and did not remain at the same site. The quality of the dataset was questioned already in 1927 by Finn Malmgren in his dissertation "On the Properties of Sea Ice" referring to systematic measurement errors. Data was digitized by C. Katlein manually from a scan of "The Norwegian North Polar Expedition Scientific Results vol. 6 (1905)" Section number 12 "Meteorology" compiled by H. Mohn.     This dataset contains the observations of air temperature in the ship's crow's nest as conducted during the Norwegian North Polar Expedition in 1893-1896 onboard the drifting vessel Fram. Observations were obtained on an irregular schedule during the expedition. Temperatures were measured under the lead of S. Scott-Hansen. Surface air temperatures at the same points in time were measured in a weather hut placed on the ice at an approximate height of 1.5m. Data was digitized by C. Katlein manually from a scan of pages 497 and following of The Norwegian North Polar Expedition Scientific Results vol. 6 (1905) Section number 12 Meteorology compiled by H. Mohn.     Nuclear descent from the fission barrier in the presence of long--range memory effects

    We have investigated the peculiarities of nuclear descent from a parabolic fission barrier within a generalized Langevin equation with power--law f(tt)=(tt/τ)αf(t-t')=(|t-t'|/\tau)^{-\alpha} memory function. We have observed much stronger slowing down of the nuclear descent in the presence of long--range memory effects, caused by the power--law memory function at 0<α<10<\alpha<1, than in the presence of short--range memory effects, generated by exponential f(tt)=exp(tt/τ)f(t-t')={\rm exp}(-|t-t'|/\tau) memory function. At a specific value of the exponent α=1/2\alpha=1/2 of the power--law memory function, it turned out possible to find analytically the trajectory of the descent and demonstrate that the long--range memory effects give rise to complex time oscillations of nuclear shape, becoming more frequent and damped with the correlation time τ\tau.     Objectives: The known fear of pain during mechanical removal of dental caries by conventional rotating instruments has lead to the development of a novel, chemomechanical method, based on carious tissue softening by the use o f a special solution. The main constituent of the solution is aminobutyric acid, which dissolves carious tissue by decomposition o f its collagenous structure. Material and Methods: The procedure consists of directing pulsating jets of warmed solution at the carious lesion using an electronic device. The layers of carious tissue are softened by the solution, and the use of an electronic device allows selectivity and evacuation of carious tissue from a particular tooth. The solution has no effect on healthy dentin, tooth pulp or surrounding soft tissue, and causes no allergic reactions. Results: The study was performed in a sample of 60 patients. After the use o f the solution, carious lesions were removed in all study subjects, either by excavation or by very light grating without pressure. Study results showed that 77% of the patients felt no pain or any strange taste of the solution, and 87% of the patients required no anesthesia during caries preparation.Conclusion: Carious tissue was successfully evacuated in 75%- -100% o f the study patients. Dentin areas remained clean and uneven, with wide dentin channels providing ideal retention for composite materials. This procedure for caries removal is recommended in the case o f large carious lesions in soft and moderately hard dentin, in the preparation of class V, and in work with frightened patients, small children or patients allergic to anesthetics.Svrha: Uobičajeni strah od boli pri mehaničkom odstranjivanju zubnoga karijesa konvencionalnim rotirajućim instrumentima potaknuo je razvoj nove kemijsko-mehaničke metode kojom se omekšavaju kariozne mase upotrebom posebne tekućine. Otopina, koje je osnovni sastojak aminobuterična kiselina, otapa kariozne mase razarajući njihove kolagenske strukture. Materijal i metode: Postupak se sastoji u tome da se u karioznu leziju elektronskom napravom usmjeravaju pulzirajući mlazevi zagrijane tekućine. Tekućina omekšava i otklanja kariozne mase. Upotreba elektronske naprave omogućuje selektivnost i odstranjenje karioznih masa sa zuba. Tekućina ne djeluje na zdravi dentin, zubnu pulpu ili na okolna meka tkiva i ne uzrokuje alergijske reakcije. Rezultati: Rezultati našeg istraživanja temelje se na uzorku od 60 pacijenata. Nakon uporabe otopine, kariozne su mase kod svih pacijenata očišćene ekskavacijom ili vrlo laganim struganjem bez pritiska. Rezultati među pacijentima pokazuju da 77% pacijenata nije osjećalo bol ni bilo kakav poseban okus tekućine, te da 87% pacijenata nije zahtijevalo anesteziju tijekom preparacije karijesa. Zaključak: Kariozna masa uspješno je odstranjena u 75%-100% pacijenata. Dentin je bio čist, neravan sa širokim dentinskim kanalima idealnima za retenciju kompozitne građe. Postupak takva odstranjenja karijesa preporučuje se u slučajevima velikih karioznih lezija u mekom i umjerenotvrdom dentinu, kod preparacije V. klase, tijekom rada s prestrašenim pacijentima, malom djecom ili s pacijentima alergičnima na anestetike
