    No full text
In this paper, the author presents the functional analysis of a house of Himera. The house, located in the Block XII of the plateau of Himera, was excavated in the 1970s by the Istituto di Archeologia dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo. Two houses were characterized by a certain richness of furnishings, consisting of abundant colonial and imported ceramic material, as well as bronze and marble furnishings. The research was concentrated in the Casa I Nord of the “Isolato XII”, from which all the materials were analyzed. Although in the eastern part of the house the archaeological contexts had been damaged by plough ing, a study of the finds allowed a functional reading of the building, in which there were a piece connected to the preparation and conservation of food, the courtyard and a compartment intended for the reception of guests. Precisely this last compartment provided a considerable amount of table vases, two marble and figured vases that hint at erotic and prenuptial themes. The context of this last room, as well as the architectural and planimetric characteristics of the house, prompted the author to read the building as an occasional location for collective activities. The carrying out of community rites within the oikos, today confirmed by numerous archaeological finds in different poleis, once again nudges the scientific debate towards the abandonment of the opposing categories of “sacred / profane”, “public / private”, “civic /individual”, to the advantage of a more nuanced interpretation of the archaeological context, firmly an chored to the archaeological data

    No full text
Galdós was experiencing in his formation and in his first stage of production the narrative space of the press. The short story “El artículo de fondo” was published in 1871 in Revista de España, in 1879, in three installments in El Océano and reappears in 1889 in a collection of brief narrative texts that accompany his Torquemada en la hoguera. This study tries to focus, on the one hand, the variants introduced by the author, especially in the last edition, in order to evaluate the process of maturation of galdosian writing. On the other hand, taking into account the essentially heterotextual consistency of this short story, it try to put it in relation to the pluritextual narrative texture, which the newspaper macrotexts emblematically reflects.

Monodromy representations and surfaces with maximal Albanese dimension

    No full text
We relate the existence of some surfaces of general type and maximal Albanese dimension to the existence of some monodromy representations of the braid group B2(C2) in the symmetric group Sn. Furthermore, we compute the number of such representations up to n= 9 , and we analyze the cases n∈{2,3,4}. For n=2,3 we recover some surfaces with pg= q= 2 recently studied (with different methods) by the author and his collaborators, whereas for n= 4 we obtain some conjecturally new examples

Laser Ablation: An Easy Route To Obtain Gold And Silver Nanomaterials

Gold and silver nanoparticles (AuNP and AgNP) have a very important role in nanotechnolgy and nanoscience, due to their physical, chemical and biochemical properties. We produced colloidal solution of Au and Ag nanoparticles in a fast and inexpensive way by laser ablation of the bulk metals in a liquid buffer using the 1064 nm line of a Q -switched Nd – YAG laser. On one hand these solutions are stable without any external chemical reagent, so nanoparticles can be obtained free in solution. On the other hand we succesfully performed the laser ablation synthesis (LAS) in water and in organic solvents, so it is possible to functionalize these particles during as well as after the LAS, simply solubilizing the ligands in the appropriate solvent.[1,2] Furthermore we found that in toluene, LAS of AuNP produces a graphite – gold nanocomposite. The graphitic matrix determined the quenching of the characteristic surface plasmon absorption (SPA) of the AuNP, that can be restored by the matrix removal.[3] The characterization of AuNP and AgNP solutions is easily achieved by UV – vis spectroscopy using the Mie Theory to fit the SPA. For free particles in solution we conveniently fitted the SPA with the Mie Model for compact spheres and the Gans model for spheroids. We verified that one can account for the isolated nanoparticles fraction using the Mie model for simple spheres and for the aggregated nanoparticles fraction using the Gans model for spheroids.[2] In the case of the graphite – AuNP composite we reproduced the SPA quenching using the Mie model extension for core@shell particles.[3] HRTEM images confirmed the results obtained with the UV-vis spectroscopy. Finally we were able to obtain a certain control on the average size and aggregation of nanoparticles by laser treatment at 532 nm of AuNP solution. [1] V. Amendola, G. Mattei, C. Cusan, M. Laser Ablation Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Embedded in Graphitic Carbon Matrix

    No full text
We obtained a nanocomposite of silver nanoparticles embedded in a graphitic carbon matrix by laser ablation of an Ag plate in toluene solution. The AgNP nanocomposite has been characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, micro–Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM analysis. AgNP surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is quenched by the carbon matrix, but it can be easily restored by thermal oxidation in air of the matrix. The synthesis procedure is very fast and easy and the matrix prevents AgNP aggregation and growth. The solid nanocomposite can be obtained either as a film or as a bulk sample simply by evaporating the solvent. This technique can be easily adopted for several types of metals

Laser Ablation Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents

    No full text
Free and functionalized gold nanoparticles are synthesized by laser ablation of a gold metal plate immersed in dimethyl sulfoxide, acetonitrile, and tetrahydrofuran. Functionalized gold nanoparticles are synthesized in a one-step process thanks to the solubility of the ligands in these solvents. It is possible to have significant control of the concentration, aggregation, and size of the particles by varying a few parameters. UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy are used for the characterization of the nanoparticles. The Mie model for spherical particles and the Gans model for spheroids allow a fast and reliable interpretation of experimental UV-vis spectra

    No full text
For 31 weeks – between January and August 1985 – a new series of articles, “Crónica sentimental de la Transición”, then compiled and edited in the same year by Planeta. Taking into consideration the aspect of the concept of ‘border’ as limen, that is, unstable place-threshold of the identity configuration, which can encourage research about the ‘other’ and promote the encounter, this work aims to analyse the resources of literary discourses used by Vázquez Montalbán within the macro-text of the newspaper, in the theoretical framework of Cultural Studies. As a process already experienced by the author, this “Crónica” weaves a reflection on the new identity construction of the Spain of the Political Transition

A new family of surfaces with pg=q=2 and K2=6 whose Albanese map has degree 4

    No full text
We construct a new family of minimal surfaces of general type with pg = q = 2 and K2 = 6, whose Albanese map is a quadruple cover of an abelian surface with polarization of type (1, 3). We also show that this family provides an irreducible component of the moduli space of surfaces with pg = q = 2 and K2 = 6. Finally, we prove that such a component is generically smooth of dimension 4 and that it contains the two-dimensional family of product–quotient examples previously constructed by the first author. The main tools we use are the Fourier–Mukai transform and the Schr ̈odinger representation of the finite Heisenberg group H3
